“Good beach club atmosphere / restaurant only review”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2010

We had lunch here. Surroundings & atmosphere are a large step above the Unawatuna equivalents and I recommend lunch followed by hanging out by the pool for the afternoon (check with the owner when you book lunch).

Lunch itself was very tasty and a varied menu. The chocolate nemesis pudding was a real hit with the sugar inclined and my seer fish “tartar” was delicious.

Good value: say $10-£10/head all in.

Looked like a great place to stay - small, quiet, comfortable

Well it's hard to write a small review about the Era beach. It is an amazing place. After a nightmare 8 hour drive from Hatton (it was supposed to be 6 hours but we got lost) we FINALLY arrived at the Era and I have to say, once we got through the discreet gate it was well worth the drive to get there.
We got taken straight to our rooms and the staff were very kind and understanding, even though we weren't in the greatest mood at the time. Although it's next to the road, you never realize it and instead hear the sound of waves crashing against the sand. It was bliss. The next morning we had breakfast by the pool which was at the centre of the hotel and was simply stunning (it is quite unfortunate that the owner has been so busy that she has never swam in it!) and the best part of it all had to be the delicious pastries they served us. Not only that, but with just 8 rooms in the resort it felt like we were the only ones there and that we were staying in someones private villa which is something not many people get to experience. Well it all sounds like paradise but there are a few bits and pieces that should be fixed. Firstly, the garden. The grass wasn't exactly in it's best state but that didn't really bother us, the only thing that did was the dog poo! Not very good for a hotel like this one.
In the rooms the lights on the bedside were boiling hot, and I mean it so don't touch the lampshade! But then again, the hotel had just opened (literally a month before we came) and it can be very hectic for the owners to get everything in working order. However the lamp and in fact the rest of the furnishings in the huge rooms were very stylish. The bathrooms were amazing. There is no need for a bath when you can have a massive rain forest shower which is definitely what you need after a hot day in Galle Fort during a regular power cut.
All in all, this is probably the best choice out of all the beach resorts in Galle and it is a perfect alternative to the usual big and bold 5 star resorts that one associates with places like Phuket or Bali. Oh one more thing, don't swim at the beach that the hotel overlooks as it has currents. Simply stroll to the next beach and there you will find heavenly rock pools to swim in.

If you like luxurious seafront hotels that offer quick access to some of the prettiest beaches in the world, then stay at ERA Beach Hotel. Nothing can beat the view from this place, it’s about as close to the ocean as you can get.
LAYOUT – The 8-room hotel is U-shaped and faces the beautifully wild Indian Ocean. Four large rooms upstairs have vaulted ceilings and an expansive terrace overlooking the sea. Downstairs are four more suites and an open-air lobby with giant folding doors made of gorgeous Nadum wood, plus a bar, cafe and restaurant wrapped around a crystal clear swimming pool. The beach lies just 30 feet beyond the hotel and the entire property is lined with coconut palms and frangipani trees. It’s an impressive design and layout, feels more like a private beach villa than a hotel.
ROOMS – I loved the tall ceilings in the upstair suites. You feel like royalty sleeping in extra tall canopy beds covered in cream-colored muslin perched atop an elevated platform. And the air-conditioning works very well despite the tall ceilings, which is a big plus in such a hot country. There’s a skylight in each of the spacious bathrooms which are tiled in modern slate with extra large sinks and rain showers. Unfortunately the water in my shower drained very slowly, so I had to turn the water off between rinses. Hopefully they’ll fix that soon. But overall the rooms were very comfortable.
LOCATION – Excellent. You can see fisherman on stilts right off the beach (ask the staff what time), and Galle Fort is just 15 minutes away by tuk tuk. However if you don’t like oceanspray or bad weather, note this hotel is VERY CLOSE to the sea.
FOOD – As with most places we dined at in Sri Lanka, the food was very good. Portions were not large, but the prices were fair considering the quality, presentation, and oceanfront location. Most of the dining is set up around a candlelit pool which makes for a romantic evening, but there is also a private dining room that can be closed off for large parties.
SERVICE – The staff was friendly, efficient, and spoke excellent English. The manager Alistair and owner Dawn were both very welcoming and eager to show us around the property.
CLEANLINESS – The property itself seemed to be well-maintained. They trim the trees and sweep the grounds regularly, but some of the seat cushions around the pool could use a dusting as sea mist tends to coat the deck furniture with a light film. Also the bed linens and towels were a bit musty, probably due to the tropical climate and low turnover rate of guests (the hotel is still new).

Overall I really enjoyed my stay at ERA Beach and would highly recommend it to others. I think this hotel will become extremely popular with tourists soon!
