“Great place to unwind; Not for a sea swim”
Reviewed August 22, 2013

Decided to have a spontaneous weekend away and chose Era beach - it's a well designed property and only has about 6 (I think) rooms so it's not your average big beach hotel which was great for us. It's good for a private, quiet vacation & is relatively child friendly (we travelled with a 2 year old).

The food was good - but we were disappointed at breakfast when we learnt we had to have placed the order for the Sri Lankan breakfast the night before - no one told us this!! So we didn't have much of a choice - and their version of muesli is a mix of corn flakes, oats, bananas & raisins!! NOT muesli!! But I wasn't too fussed about it.

The pool is great and the view of the sea is amazing; unfortunately the stretch right in front of the hotel isn't suitable for swimming. We were there off season so the sea was rough in any case but even during the season I doubt you can swim there cos of the reef. Best check on this with the hotel manager (Ethan who was really helpful & obliging) before you make the
reservation.

The rooms & bathrooms are large & spacious in typical geoffry bawa style. We did see 2 cockroaches in the room - gross but it is a tropical country. These things happen :)

My husband, our one year old baby and I stayed at Era Beach a few nights ago. We stayed in a Sea View suite (number 1) which was huge and felt very luxurious to us, with a lovely big bathroom. We were not disturbed by the noise from the road.

We thought the food was good and the hotel itself is very beautiful. There are various areas in the hotel in which to sit and relax.

But the best thing about this hotel is the staff. They really make sure the atmosphere of Era Beach is indulgent and relaxing. We were greeted so warmly by Ethan when we arrived and he made us feel very welcome and looked after. I asked to have our dinner on the balcony outside our room and Ethan not only anticipated what I was going to say before I said it, but he made sure I felt nothing was a problem. On the morning of our departure our baby became ill and the staff dealt with us brilliantly.

The whole team were lovely and looked after us and our baby very well. Thank you very much to all the staff at Era Beach for making out stay so wonderful.

We stayed here on a family holiday after our orginal hotel was so bad we left after 1 night. The hotel is set beautifully in front of a nice area of beach which was much calmer than the beaches closer to Galle. We loved the infinity pool with ocean views, delicious food of a high standard and great cocktails at the bar or poolside. We were upgraded to their sea view rooms which were luxuriously furnished in traditional and colonial style. A couple of our group in garden view rooms complained about the level of cleanliness in their bathrooms which were cleaned again by staff. We were a little disappointed with the general slow service as the manager had thought it appropriate to send most of their staff to a cricket match, as that morning they only had 2/7 rooms occupied and were not expecting a group of 9 to arrive as we did. The chef and 1 remaining staff member coped well however and still maintained a good standard despite being swamped with guest demands and food/drink orders. I would say best for couples but suitable for families too.

Managed by the Jetwing Group this is an intimate beachfront property on the beautiful southwest coast of Sri Lanka very close to Galle. The setting is tranquil and the villa is comfortable and tastefully appointed. For lunch I had the local crab curry which is a popular choice with the local visitors. It was nicely presented with home made bread as opposed to the usual rice option which is also available if preferred. A spicy onion and maldive fish sambol accompanied the curry. The crabs were tender and succulent although I would have preferred the curry to be more 'chilli hot' as we locals tend to like it. For dessert, we were served a celery parfait which was interesting and very refreshing after the curry lunch. Service was friendly and attentive. Recommended for a relaxing stay by the beach with innovative local cuisine.

Fantastic resort with an excellent staff. Situated close to Galle, easily accessible. The resort has about eight rooms, all attended to by a well trained staff. Beach is beautiful and clean, meals are delicious. Highly recommended.

We stayed for 3 nights. The hotel only has 8 rooms and there were little other guests.
Overall I have to say it was a lovely boutique hotel with large rooms and large bathrooms. The eye for detail on hotel accessories was a nice touch.
The food was very good and we had two chefs looking after the two of us. However due to it being so quite you did feel as if you we being watched all the time and under pressure to order.
The rooms really require the following if they wish to keep up the required standards. New towels, the blinds and curtains need to be replaced to something more private, the rooms were too dark and lighting improvements are required as are plug sockets as these are hard to find. The pillows need to be overhauled as they are not comfy and the scratchy blankets need to be replaced with duvets.
The under manager Ethan did well at looking after us and gave us a room each!

We (a group of 10 friends) stayed at the hotel for 2 nights in mid December at the recommendation of our travel agent, Jetwing Tailormade because the Lighthouse was fully booked. However, having been to the Lighthouse to look around on our way to the Dutch Fort, we thought it’s a much better choice than the Lighthouse. We enjoyed our stay there.
No doubt it’s a beautiful property by the sea. The staff was friendly and helpful especially the chef who kindly steamed the live fish (in Chinese style!) we bought from fishermen at the beach.
The trouble we had was there were no twin beds in the suites. It was not made known to us at the time of booking. As we had two single ladies sharing a suite, the management at first put a roll-up bed for one of them. It looked so uncomfortable and after a little quibble, the management gave them another room at the end of the lobby. We appreciate their efforts and wish to thank them for the quick solution.

Turning to the rooms, my husband and I had an ocean view suite on the second floor. As the windows open into the corridor, we had to pull down the blinds most of the time so we could not enjoy the sea view from the room. The room is big, but dimly lit. Our friends felt the same too. In my room, four of the ceiling lights could not be switched on. The bed was placed on a raised platform, a design which made it easy to trip getting up from bed in the middle of the night. The other thing is there is noise from the traffic coming from the back, so the bathroom door must be closed to keep out the noise. The bathroom is well positioned. Afterall, I have no hesitation in recommending our friends to stay here.

Dear Guest,

Thank You for taking the time to leave us with this valuable review, your comments are a great asset to our effort to develop our standards and guest experience. The property itself; designed by a protégé of the famous Geoffrey Bawa is a magnificent colonial residence and a haven for relaxation; however I must say I do recognize your observations and we are looking at ways to how some of these impracticalities may be kept to a minimal. I am very pleased to see you enjoyed the food; this is something that continues to attract compliments & our team here at Jetwing Era Beach are developed to cater to your preferences, I am happy you were able to appreciate this.

Again, thank you for your comments and feedback; we hope we to welcome you back to Jetwing Era Beach in the future.

Sincerely
Robert Claesson
