After 2 nights in Colombo the four of us arranged for our contact Shalika to pick us up from Kalutara railway station as that is as far as the train currently goes. He was there on time and basically made himself available from that time onward for the whole of our stay. We had two lovely meals at the guest house, one of which was a gift from the family and also used the laundry facility which was fine and cheap. As the cricket finished a day early Shalika took us to a Buddhist temple close to a secluded beach. Ideal for a swim and a light lunch. On the way back we stopped at a turtle hatchery and the following day went whale watching where a discount was negotiated on our behalf. All drop-off and pick-ups including our airport drop for the flight home were at reasonable rates. The lovely beach resort of Unawatana is a ten minute drive away. I stayed in an air-conditioned room which was fine. There were a couple of small problems that were resolved quickly after being reported. The shower is basic and not very powerful but I can only comment on the one in my room. There was a supply of water, cold beer and snacks available until late evening. These were also very reasonably priced. Bear in mind that you are a bit rural and so you will encounter all sorts of wildlife. Shalika and the family really do go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable and nothing seems too much bother. If you like peace and quiet while being in easy reach of the beach bars and restaurants then Ranthil is ideal.
