Great place to stay for those visiting southern Sri Lanka. Also really a great for visiting couples, students and people coming to work in Sri Lanka. The place is run by a very sweet and friendly owner Yvonne. It is immaculately clean, with western toilets. The manager Bandula was indispensable for our trip -- he helped with planning trips, teaching us to use the local bus, getting us to a doctor when we got sick; literally anything we needed. He picked us up and dropped us off at the airport, and even exchanged money for us. Yvonne has a western trained chef Jayantha who also cooks great Sri Lankan curry, so we would alternate from from delicious chicken curries, fried rice and even things like chicken cordon bleu. We were able to eat salads and any other foods without any concern, as Jayantha also cooks for Yvonne and all cold items are well cleaned. We came to Galle to work for a few months and could not have been happier with our choice to stay. The room was large, had A/C, and if we wanted we could have had TV setup with all western channels. We did not setup the TV because we had enough work we could do with the high-speed wireless internet in the resort. A tuk-tuk was available at all times to take us wherever we needed to go. And to top it off, there is a beautiful swimming pool where we could swim every day. When we first arrived in Sri Lanka we had no idea a place like this could exist there, and that we would be lucky enough to stay in paradise, in a backdrop of beautiful greenery and swinging monkeys in trees. For example, when family visited, they actually refused to leave the resort to even visit beaches (about 10 min by Tuk-Tuk to Unawatuna) or the Fort (also about 10 min, and an area that we felt was largely overrated) because they did not want to leave the beautiful confines of the resort.
As a note, for people visiting the south for only a few days, this resort/guest house is not located right on the beach. However, we LOVED this fact as if you stay longer than a few days you would not want to stay in the touristy areas of Unawatuna. It is an easy tuk-tuk or bus ride to the Fort, although again after one or two trips you likely will not want to leave to do anything in the Fort, and with Jayantha's cooking there is not much point in frequenting the limited restaurants in the Galle/unawatuna area. This would also be a great choice for any visiting students or workers to Galle who seek a truly comfortable, western-like place to stay for a prolonged time, many of whom we met during our stay. Most people tend to stay in the Fort, but as you can tell from this review and others on TripAdvisor, the general fort area is actually quite dingy and poorly maintained, and I cannot say enough about how happy my spouse and I were we chose to stay in Leijay and not the Fort (especially considering the access to A/C, wireless internet, swimming pool, and western cooking we would not have had in any of the guest houses in the Fort area). I expect that as the war is ending and the economy turns around Leijay will quickly become incredibly busy again, so take your opportunity to stay there and experience all the beauty of Sri Lanka with the western luxuries many of us crave when abroad.
