This was an interesting experience (I would say meal but our food never arrived). We tried Serendipity after not being able to get into Mama's. We came across the restaurant and had read a good review in the Lonely Planet so decided to try it. Admittedly we entered from the back (closest to the Fort wall) though were pointed upstairs when we asked about a table. The area here seem unfinished and hot with no breeze and the one fan not working. There was one other couple who arrived and ordered slightly after us. Orders were taken and the menu looked good with a mix of dishes and prices in line with the Fort area (still expensive compared to areas outside the Fort). We ordered drinks, one entree and seven mains. Drinks arrived one by one over the course of around 15 mins. After 30 mins we were told that the entree was unavailable. At this point I took a look downstairs and found the main dining area which also sold art and books so spent some time looking around and also keeping an eye on the kitchen. Seeing some meals coming out (which looked great) and being taken upstairs I headed back up though these were taken to the other table. At this point (around 45 mins) we decided to move to the main dining area. We asked our waiter (who took our original order and served our drinks) if we could move down and he said no problem. We made our own way down, found a table and sat down. 5 mins later the same waiter asked us if we wanted to order and had to be reminded we had just moved from upstairs (there were around 5 groups in the whole restaurant). When we got to an hour with no signs of food or even general cooking activity we asked the waiter who said our meals would be around 20 minutes. None of the dishes ordered were complicated - it appeared they just hadn't been started. At this point we paid for our drinks and left to the surprise of the waiter.
The food that we did see looked good though while we were there one other couple left without eating and I saw one table downstairs waiting for the entire time we were downstairs without receiving food. Given the lack of service and other options around Galle it's not somewhere I
would try again. We didn't have one other bad experience in Sri Lanka. Even the street vendors are great with fantastic food and much better service for a couple of dollars!
