“An authentic Fort experience”
Reviewed March 5, 2011

Amazing location, our A/C room looked directly over the fort walls to the crashing waves beyond. Sitting on the roof terrace to watch the sunset was beautiful. A real family affair, the owners have had the place for decades, and know most people in their corner of the Fort. Breakfast served overlooking the sea, which is pretty impressive in the middle of town.

The family are Muslim, indeed the man of the house is an elder at the gorgeous mosque along the street, so no drinks in the guesthouse, but for us that served as the perfect excuse to live out colonial planter fantasies with a G&T in the Fort’s smarter hotels. Wish I’d brought a panama hat…

The Rampart View guesthouse is very run down - wash your hands in the bathroom and the sink empties onto the floor. The bathroom was very mouldy and the bedroom just adequate. However, the location is stunning with the second floor overlooking the ramparts of Galle Fort and out to sea. The roof garden was a very sad sight - what a waste with the views it has. This is one of those places where a little imagination and a bit of work could have stunning results. It is sad to see places deteriorate when they are doing good business - it was pretty well full house when we were there. If you are prepared to put up with less than perfect conditions, the people are friendly and helpful and the cost is low for a double room with bathroom. I just wish there was a bit more routine maintenance - the building deserves it.

We saw a water leak in the toilet after the guests check out. Then it was rectified within 15 minutes, but we were not informed by the guests about this matter and these guest were occupying the room for few nights. It was not a big issue and it would have been attended instantly. Later we saw the review in the tripadvisor. Now the matter is sold and we would like to bring it to kind notice about it. We welcome suggestions and comments from the guests in our guest house to improve our business.

We had planned on staying at Beach Haven, but they were full and recommended Rampart View. In the end this was quite fortuitous, as it was very peaceful and great for couples. The rooms were basic but clean, and reasonably priced.

The whole family were very accommodating. We were leaving Galle at 9pm, and they allowed us to leave our bags safely, coming and going as we needed (to drop off souvenirs!), and to use the family bathroom to freshen up before we left.

Great basic place to stay, and central. We actually stayed in December 2009, but it wouldn't allow us to put this date!

We really enjoyed our stay in Galle, and would definitely like to return. It was an interesting and relaxing town.

This place is owned by a Moslem family and hence they prefer you dont have liquor within their premises. They give good Sri Lankan breakfast for a cost, and most importantly I thought the prices were good. They charged us something like 2k LKR for a double bed and 3K LKR for triple occupancy. Quiet place...they have a scary security system, that lights up each time you step out of the room at night. It faces the sea...and is bang opp Rampart View/lighthouse.

We stayed 3 nights in the Fort. After the long drive from Kandy we were warmly welcomed by Rauf ( the owner) and his family. They only have 4 rooms upstairs on the second floor with a balcony, but what a view! The guest house also has a rooftop area for even better views. The room itself was air conditioned with a fan also, the bathroom was adequate with hot water and there was a mosquito net provided. The entire guesthouse has good security and is extremely clean. Rauf's wife is an excellent cook and her Sri Lankan breakfasts were great ( she will also cook dinner if required). Dont expect a hotel with room service, fridge, TV, phone, etc. It's excellent value(3200rupees/night) for what it is.

Small but serene - that is what I would say in short and sweet. Even though this hotel is small, the rooms are clean and simple and the view facing the ocean is excellent. Sunset and sunrise are the best time to watch the seaview and the hotel's location is rather convenient as it is close and walking distance to several shops, historic monuments and the small public beach by the lighthouse. The owner is honest and trustworthy and can speak 9 languages

The hotel has a great gem and jewellery shop in the lobby and the prices are reasonable. The gems in the shop are genuine and items include various amethysts, rubies, zircons, sapphires, cat's eyes, tourmalines, moonstones and garnets too!

My only complaint is that the beds are not strong and can be damaged easily. Also the upper balcony floors could be quite slippery so walk carefully,

As I mentioned earlier, this hotel is what I call Small but Serene. Gems, good breakfast, nice people and most importantly, super nice scenery of all Galle seas!

  • Liked — Hospitality, scenery and gem and jewellery shop too.
  • Disliked — Beds and slippery balcony
