Rampart View is a great place. Family run and located next to the southern wall, it offers great views, fantastic value and a warm welcome.
We’d emailed ahead of time for the booking and there was no problem, even though we arrived in the morning. The family welcomed us in and showed us to the room.
The room is an actual queen-sized bed, not 2 single beds pushed together. It was bright and airy with the corridor/balcony sitting area looking out over the wall and at the sea. The bathroom was clean with a power heater for hot water, but had a quite a few mosquitoes to keep you company. We lit a coil in the bathroom and kept the door closed and there was no problem. The breakfast is not included but for 400 rupees per person you can get Euro or Sri Lankan fare, worth it.
Many other reviews and guides complain about a no booze rule and a curfew. Both are true but let’s work it out. The family is a little security obsessed and has an alarm/lighting system that gets activated at night from movement. They turn it on around 10.30 pm and off at around 5am. This would also mean that the curfew runs the same time. It’s not strictly held up and if you really want to stay out in the dry ghost town of Galle, there is a bell to call one of the family members to let you in. They have no problem with this. For the booze, you’re not allowed to bring in back to the hotel. Not really a problem as the whole time is pretty much dry too. The best restaurants and hotels in town are alcohol free. If you really can’t wait 24 hours to have a drink (seek help) but seriously it is available in certain places and you can sit on the wall or other cafes and chill and drink no problem.
Galle is super quiet, all cafes and restaurants close early so none of this is really a problem. With not much to do, other than walk around, spend no longer than 1 day here.
