“Genuine people running a very nice guesthouse”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2010

Excellent mixture of real Sri Lanka and upmarket guesthouse set in a locals road surrounded by jungle. Large monkey colony next door. Very exotic wildlife. Minutes from an empty sandy beach. Just three letting rooms and three full time staff result in a high level of service. Evening meals optional but recommended. Good swimming pool and constant supply of cold drinks. We took all of our meals outdoors, a nice thing to do in the middle of February!

We stayed at the Shangri Lanka Villa for a week in January, near the beginning of a one month visit. I booked it because all the reviews were so good - and we weren't disappointed. From the moment we arrived, it seemed that Karen and the staff were just trying to make everything relaxed and easy for us.

We stayed in the ground floor room, the one with twin double four poster beds - it was a huge room, and the bathroom was something else - and everywhere spotlessly clean. When we stepped out onto our patio in the morning and the lovely breakfast was brought to us there, we felt like film stars!

Karen was a great host - Rohan was away until our last night - very chatty, full of interesting stories about Sri Lankan life. Also very helpful in letting me use the internet and making suggestions for the rest of our trip, which we were making up as we went along. And now and then offering a great cup of tea out of one of her collection of pretty china mugs.
The three boys on the staff were always very pleasant and helpful.

We made a couple of trips to look at local places of interest - Geoffrey Bawa (the architect)'s home at Lunuganga, and his brother Bevis's house at Brief - Karen and the boys organised tuk tuks for us. Highly recommended as something a bit different to do.

The only thing wrong with staying at the Shangri Lanka Villa was that we did it at the beginning of our trip - which meant that everywhere else was a bit of a come down afterwards!

Spent two nights and wish it could have been longer but it was a lovely start to our holiday. We were looked after very well and the food was delicious. The room was delightful with an enormous bed and bathroom, plus its own veranda. I do hope we can return.

We visited Sri Lanka on a working and relaxing holiday. After a week of work Shangri-Lanka was an amazing sight to see. The service was brilliant, food delicious and rooms sumptuous. It had the little comforts of home that you like to see but in the middle of paradise so we still felt that we were experiencing the country. We ate here both nights with delicious food served outside the main house, breakfast was served on our balcony with monkeys playing in the near by trees. The added service of a tuk tuk for local trips was a real bonus. We would definitely visit again next time we're in Sri Lanka.

'Boutique' conjures up a great image but so often doesn't quite deliver. This guest house delivers in spades. It's comfortable, spacious, tastefully furnished and thoughtfully designed. Rohan & Karen and their staff really look after their guests in a relaxed and friendly but very efficient and sensitive manner. This eases the inhibitions that can accompany long journeys to unfamiliar cultures and climates and will help you to enjoy the company and the country. This is the best guest house we have ever stayed in.

What can I say that hasn't been said before. Great little place with 4 rooms. Large airy, aircon or fan and a huge bathroom. The villa is secure and a quick walk to Bentota Beach which is pretty undeveloped. Karen and Rohan are great hosts, and Rohan is a very knowledgable and friendly man. Travelling as a couple we really enjoyed the socialising with other guests especially at dinner time, enjoying Rohans culinary delights. U can take your own alcohol or purchase drinks from the fridge. Pretty much anything you want to do, Rohan can organise or suggest. Bentota is not a very touristy town which we liked. The larger resorts on the beach (with train line between resort and beach) didn't really do it for us and were populated with guests from Germany and Russia. The other guests at Shangrilanka were all from the UK so language not a problem. Rohan and Sanka suggested several day trips and we would definitely go back to enjoy the hospitality. We had our best meal in Sri Lanka right on Bentota Beach at a little beach bar suggested by other guests. Food is sooooo cheap, plentiful and delicious. We laughed when we ordered our meals and were delivered enough food for 4 for a rediculously low price.

We like to keep small and personal in contrast to the faceless resorts. We are pleased you liked it here.

Firstly and foremost I would like to mention that this is a holiday worth coming back again and again.
I read all the reviews on trip advisor, and was overwhelmed by the response, as one who has travelled a great deal I was suprised at all the positive feedback, as there were only excellent reponses. I had to find out what all the fuss was about, and happily I can say that its all true and then some.
The service, first class with a smile. Everything you could want, we spent my partner and I, 11 days and every day we ate our dinner their. The food was amazing, tasty and left you wanting more. The breakfast was a choice of Sri Lankin, or English, with an asortment of fresh fruit. The wonderful aspect was there was no time allocated as to when you could have breafkast, but as a general courtesy we didnt leave it to late.
The room was spacious, clean, the bathroom was enourmous, fresh sheets each day, and free internet access, which is unhearded of these days.
There is a library of books/novels, and DVD's. The pool was great with each room having a balcony of its own overlooking the pool and the beautiful surroundings.
The beach was a 10 minute walk, or a free tuk tuk ride, and was clean, quiet and I went everyday and loved it. We walked to town a number of times along the beach side and it took about 35-40 minutes, and 10-15 minutes by tuk tuk. Very easy and you got a real sense of daily life.
Your time is what you make of it, lazing by the pool, beaching it, exploring the town centre, eating great food, going out, its all up to you, and nothing is forced.
We spent the lasty 4 days on a tour, which I highly recommend, we went with Rohan and it was a amzing experience, as I have done majority of my tours in a group this was a pleasant change. And seeing Sri Lanka through the eyes of Sri Lankins is the way to go.
I highly recommend this if you are looking for a true experience of Sri Lankin life and culture, and a relaxing and traquil time , put your feet up read a good book, drink some wine, eat amazing local food, explore the beautiful beaches and enjoy nature.
So happy that I made the choice to come to ShangriLankaVilla, thankyou to all the great staff, and especially Rohan and Karin for making this an experience to remember ;o)
