All these people can't be wrong, I thought, and they weren't. From being picked up at the airport, by our driver, Hema (not just a driver - a fabulous guide and a really nice man, who provided us with so many opportunities during our time with him), we were conducted on a fascinating six day tour, carefully and expertly constructed by Rohan and Karen, of this magical island, encompassing some of its must-see sights (Pinnewalla, Polawarunna, Sigiriya, Kandy, the hills and tea plantations, Yala and Galle) and wild animals and birds, and a selection of excellent hotels along the way. After a 5.5k mile journey from the UK and a further 600 round the island, it was perfect to finish at this beautiful property for a week of pure relaxation. Imagine a lovely house with gorgeous and huge, spotlessly clean guest rooms, where every comfort is anticipated, set in a luxuriant garden with a large, warm swimming pool. Add a warm welcome from your friendly but unobtrusive hosts, and their excellent unfailingly smiling and helpful staff, who all seem to take the greatest pleasure in your enjoyment. Throw away your watch. You can eat and drink when you want. Just ask. The menu is large and varied. Chef Rohan and his assistants cook like a dream, Sri Lankan food and western alternatives. Wait on the patio next to the kitchen, while your food is cooked fresh, or have it served on your balcony. We walked from the house along the beautiful beach into town, and as we did so we walked along the beaches of the large private hotels used by guests of the major tour companies. And we felt sorry for them, packed into their hermetically sealed walled-in luxury. The real Sri Lanka experience, the real luxury, great food and personal attention, like you've never experienced before, is available here, at very reasonable cost. We didn't want to leave and I would love to think we would come back. Genuine thanks to everyone for a fantastic Sri Lanka experience. So good to meet you all (and Maisie and Bobby!).

Room Tip: They are all excellent - don't worry about it

Personalised attention, fabulous food, ultra-comfy suite. No cable TV to distract. You almost leave the world behind .... unless you connect to the free WIFI.

Set in a quiet village so you can explore if you manage to tear yourself away from the swimming pool.

Just go!

Room Tip: We had Suite 3 ... top floor with views of the surrounds. Perfect!

We were taken from the air port with the guesthouse driver Leslie (most recommended driver for tours)..
The guesthouse is a bit isolated from Benetota but it's compensation is a beautiful resort and rooms nice meals and the lovely atmosphere even Bobby the dog welcomes you with a hello bark.
The best guesthouse we have been too in Srilanka and a very nice place to relax after a long flight.

Exceptional service made our stay an absolute pleasure. All staff were very helpful, friendly and eager to please and really added to the enjoyment of our stay. Karen was always on hand to answer any questions and make recommendations and provide advice on what to do and where to go. We were a party of 5 - with an 8 year old, who adored the surroundings, pool , staff and dogs. Rooms 4 and 5 were ideal for us as they are separate from the other building. The flexibility to have breakfast when you wanted was great, as was the complimentary tea/coffee throughout the stay. All meals were cooked to order and Chef Rohan cooked some delicious meals - traditional as well as Western to accommodate our daughter. Nothing was too much trouble.
The rooms were very spacious and immaculate, beautifully decorated and large bathrooms with open showers. Air conditioning and fans kept the rooms cool, a small mini bar in each room was a nice touch. Each room had a safe, hair dryer, plug in mosquito repellent, personal table and chairs on balcony /outside areas. Extra towels for pool and beach meant we didn't have to pack any. On site massages are available in a separate building in the grounds and these were very good and reasonable.
Shangri Lanka is located along a quiet road, 10 minutes walk from a huge stretch of deserted beach. he beach is beautiful, but swimming was not possible due to huge waves and dangerous current. As you walk along the beach, there are a few places offering sun loungers and places to stop for a drink/bite to eat - Amil Villa is one of the first you come to.
Rohan organised a fantastic tour to Yala National Park and was so kind to show us various sights during our journey, going out of his way to make sure we enjoyed ourselves and made the most of our time with him. The safari was a definite highlight of our trip - elephants and leopards! Apart from the 2 day tour , we spent 2 blissful weeks at Shangri Lanka, the surrounding area offers more than enough of a taste of Sri Lanka. The staff and ambience of the villa made it very difficult to leave and there were more than a few tears when we left. I cannot recommend this place highly enough - a real gem. Thank you to everyone for making our stay one we will always remember.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors have fantastic views of surrounding jungle and wildlife.

Fabulous stay in Bentota with Karen and Rohan. We were immediately made To feel welcome at the villa by Raymond who kindly offered us a choice of two stunning rooms. We opted for room 3 on he top floor which was massive with two large single sized beds put together and a third day bed style bed. The bathroom with an open shower was also huge, and all so tastefully done. The room had a huge balcony overlooking the pool as all the rooms do. I really can't fault the place, everything is thought of here, and all the a very high standard. You could easily just go to Shangri Lanka and do nothing else and still have an amazing holiday! Food wise prices are reasonable, and quality is good, portions are huge ie at lunch we shared 2 sandwiches between 4 of us! I definitely felt that they did Sri Lankan dishes better than western ones, naturally as the chef is a local man. The banquet for two is a must, such wonderful flavours! The baked fish is also fantastic! The house has a room filled with books and a wide choice of DVDs which proved very handy on the rainy days. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to friends, and hope to be sending a few Karen and Rohan's way!

Room Tip: We loved room 3!

It was very fortunate that our family of 4 booked to stay here for the last 3 nights of our Sri Lankan tour. It was a wonderful end to our holiday. They got it so right; there were so many things that were spot on. We had suites 1 and 2 and they were both spacious and tastefully decorated; ample lighting (unlike so many guest houses/hotels), personal safe, hairdryer, laptop, the day bed, huge bathroom with shower and corner bath, the personal verandah with table and chairs..... Other nice touches were extra towels for the pool/beach, free tea/coffee at any time, a small library of books and DVDs to borrow, free tuk tuk ride to the beach.......
It was really more of a boutique hotel rather than a B&B/guest house.
As Bentota was the last stop on our tour, we were content with just relaxing by the beach and so we spent 2 long mornings on the nearby stretch of beach. It was wonderfully quiet - even though it's the low season, we hadn't expected to be practically the only ones on it! We also swam in the pool, it was just about big enough to make it worthwhile doing a few laps. On a very wet and thundery afternoon, they were very kind to let us have a DVD player so that we could have a cozy couple of hours watching a film.

For food - we were very pleased with the wide range of breakfast options available at Shangri-Lanka villa. Our lunches were from a small cafe (can't remember the name but it's the one visible from the beach before one gets to Amal Villa if you walk along the beach). The food they served up was very good (and very reasonably priced!) and it was a bonus that they had shelters and tables and chairs on the beach itself. We had 2 dinners at the Golden Grill - as recommended by Karen. They had a good menu, the quality was good and prices reasonable. The first night's dinner was at Shangri-Lanka villa itself. It was very delicious but a little pricey. We did make the mistake of ordering "Garlic Bread" (at about the equivalent of £4!) as it is literally that - 2 or 3 slices of toasted sliced bread with thick garlic paste in between i.e. not quite the same as Garlic Bread from a typical Italian eatery but I guess we should have anticipated that!
We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely come back the next time we're in Bentota. We've already recommended some friends to go there!
