“Relaxing little getaway”
Reviewed August 7, 2010

After spending a very hectic 8 days trying to see as much of Sri Lanka as humanly possible, we spent two nights at Wunderbar to relax and unwind before our flight home. We got exactly what we wanted. The rooms were spacious and air conditioned and bug free (compared to some other crazy places we stayed at along the way). It was a simply beautiful and well thought out room on the second floor with a view toward the restaurant and we could get a glimpse of the beach. The room unfortunately did not have a safe or a bar fridge so I'm not sure if any of the other rooms did either. The hotel seems to have 3 buildings on the property where the various rooms and spa were located, and the beach was a short walk away from the hotel. There are railroad tracks that you have to cross, but the only time the trains ever disturbed us was when eating at the restaurant, and it was only briefly. As the rooms seem to be set more away from the tracks, you don't really notice the noise of the trains while you're in your room and I'm a very light sleeper.

The staff were always friendly and eager to help, we were greeted every time we passed a staff member. The food at the restaurant was excellent. We wanted to try another hotel to have dinner at a restaurant nearby but weren't satisfied with the menu so we ended up eating all of our meals at the hotel. Not once were we disappointed with the generous breakfast or filling dinner portions.

The hotel also has a pool onsite which was very nice. The water on the beach was too rough to swim in, so we spent most of our time at the pool. Wasn't overly impressed by the spa treatment I had (there were cockroaches in the room), so maybe do your research and look for a different place if you're interested in an ayurvedic massage. If you're looking for wood carved souvenirs, we walked up the road (across the street and to the left of the hotel) to a place called Amali Handicrafts. His prices were very reasonable in comparison to the other places we were taken to by a three wheeler taxi.

Overall, we had a nice experience at Wunderbar. There is nothing we can fault in our stay. It is good value for your money and would definitely stay here again.

Wunderbar was the first hotel on our trip. The trip from the hotel is 3 hours which is tough, but it will get better once the highway is built next year.

The hotel itself is totally chilled out. The staff are very helpful and seem to enjoy being there. Everyone gets involved and they had a daily volleyball game when we stayed there. rooms and pool etc. all very clean and it was very quite too. If you are used to partying on holiday you probably wont like this too much, but those who want to get away, relax, enjoy the sun and pool and beach will love it. Its hidden away from the road with a train track running through the grounds.

The train comes through a few times a day but its not too loud and in fact it adds character to the place. We actually took the train up to Colombo when we left and it was great. Lovely views right along the coast.

We stayed for about 4-5 days and wished we had more time before going sightseeing. The breakfast was lovely and refreshing, the dinner's were great (Prawns are lovely) and they are always accomodating if you dont fancy something on the menu.

The beach was too choppy to swim in at this time of year, but great fun to stand in (if you are comfortable enough in the water).

One of the highlights was PAPA Sisi who was the tuk tuk driver and who made sure we had a fantastic time on the Tuk Tuk safari taking us past tea plantations and waterfalls etc. Just make sure you tell him you dont want to buy any tshirts before you set off or you will end up in a tshirt shop! He was friendly, spoke great English, was helpful and really made our stay even better than it already was! you WONT forget him if you go on one of his trips!

We went to Sri Lanka on 6th June and stayed at Wunderbar for 14 nights. The rooms were spacious and very clean. There was Air Con, a ceiling fan and the bathroom was also big with a great shower. The rooms were cleaned daily (and the bedding changed). The guy that cleaned our room (opu) we called him was such a lovely trustworthy person., he did his job with such passion . The bar had loads of atmosphere and was also very clean. Food was great, reasonable and portion sizes were good. The waiters were fantastic. again trustworthy always a smile and nothing was too much trouble for them. Anything you want to do, can be arranged, just see Dagi.
Would we go back? ITS ALREADY BOOKED

Visiting Sri Lanka without going to Wunderbar would mean missing a true gem. This hotel has an excellent relaxing atmosphere. We arrive after a long 5 hour drive from Yala and were greeted by friendly faces; it was like meeting up with old friends.

The rooms were large, airy and clean; the food was excellent and had a good variety to choose from. The sea food was without a doubt the best we had had.

Meal times were not set and were told “whenever you want breakfast/dinner” only added to the chilled back atmosphere of this hotel.

We went on a boat trip, organised by the hotel which was truly amazing, although we did stop at a riverside seller, we never felt compelled to buy anything.

A must is to go on the tuk tuk safari with CC, you are taken off the beaten track to see the real Sri Lanka, then to a waterfall, where you can swim in the falls and relax in the pool, no rush just spend as long as you want there. Lunch is provided at a local house, a true feast of Sri Lankan food, not to spicy but very tasty before heading to the temple. We also bought pens and toffees to stop and give to the local children. A great day!

My husband and I spent three nights at the Wunderbar and loved every moment. It was the low season and very quiet however that only added to the relaxing and laid-back atmosphere. The staff were great - helpful, efficient, always ready to help and with a smile. You've got a great team there Chan!
Our personal highlights included:
- Having the pool entirely to ourselves
- Good value half-board meals - great seafood and fish
- Meals at our leisure - when ever we were ready
- The onsite turtle sanctuary and releasing a dozen or so of them one night
- Taking the local bus into Galle one day and returning on the 'slow' train - great fun
- Taking the boat trip on the Bentota river -although we were not too pleased to be highjacked into visiting one of the many Herb Gardens, where we suffered the usual hard-sell, felt very pressured and ever so slightly ripped off).
- Incredible beautiful sandy beach - almost deserted

I arrived in Colombo with my 2 children aged 7 and 5 on an overnight flight from London. We were tired and a little cranky, but were duly met by our driver who promptly drove us to the hotel. It takes the best part of 2 1/2 hours in what can only be descibed as chaos. We arrived at the Wunderbar and were shown to our room, which was massive.

Anyway straight off to the pool to cool down - no freeform infinity pool here, but it was clean and did the job.

Off to the restaurant in the evening - menu was OK, but was heavily biased towards seafood and fish, which was a little disappointing as I was looking forward to sampling some Singhalese food - having said that the seafood was fantastic.

Next day we had breakfast, which was just enormous an sets you up for the day. We then walked the 200m down to the beach, to be greeted by a fabulous stretch of golden sand. This day, and most other days we were the only people on it. The sea is a little rough, but great fun for wave jumping and mucking around, but don't expect flat calm seas gently lapping against the shore. You do have to cross a railway line to get there - but this more a point of interest than an inconvenience.

The staff are extremely attentive, and certainly we were never left wanting for anything. Also hanging around the hotel are a collection of guys who will organise all of the other activities you may wish to do. I am not sure how they fit in with the hotel, I guess they are just touting for business, but if you want a tuk-tuk, or want to go on a trip, one of them will be more than willing to help. You'll probably end up visiting their brother's handicraft shop, and it'll be their uncle's boat that you go out on, but hey, that's Sri Lanka.

Nothing is done in a hurry here, there are no set meal times and no airs and graces, so if you want to relax in a informal atmosphere at a reasonably priced hotel, then I would highly recommend the Wunderbar.

We stayed at the Wunderbar for 16 nights in February 2010. Originally we had intended to visit other parts of Sri Lanka but we were so relaxed at the Wunderbar we didn’t want to leave.

The Wunderbar is set in a lovely location on a beautiful sandy beach. The beach is 5 kms long and is a protected zone so there is natural vegetation all along it. All the time we were there, there were only two people regularly selling anything on the beach and they were not at all persistent. There are two large hotels at each end of the beach, well away from the Wunderbar and they tended to draw the touts, which was good for us.

We stayed in one of the luxury rooms which was spacious with an ensuite shower room. The bed was large and comfortable and the shower had good water pressure. Soap is provided but you’ll need to take shampoo and a hairdryer. We had an adaptor in our room but I’m not sure whether that is standard – I’d ask before you go. The housekeeping was excellent, the room was kept spotlessly clean. I think the luxury rooms are worth paying extra for as they each have a balcony.

The service was friendly, very obliging and at ‘Sri Lankan pace’ – don’t expect any rushing about! Breakfast is served whenever you are ready which adds to the relaxed feel of the place. Sri Lankans have a sweet tooth and like a lot of sugar in their drinks – we asked for no sugar in our breakfast juice and less sugar in our cocktails.

I had some lovely sapphire jewellery made at the jewellers attached to the hotel, which I’ve had valued since I came home and have been very pleased with the outcome.

We will definitely be going back to the Wunderbar and would like to say a very big thank you to Chan and his staff for making our stay so enjoyable.
