“Lihiniya positives and negatives”
Reviewed December 11, 2007

My girlfriend and myself stayed at the Lihiniya Surf hotel in June 2007. As we had got a good low price 2 week deal through first choice, we knew that the hotel would have its good and bad aspects. First thoughts on arrival were that the hotel could do with a makeover and a bit of a paint, but given that the tsunami hit these parts, i wasnt too critical.

Our room was fairly basic and not very exciting...i was surprised that we didnt even have a kettle in our room. In saying that, the room was clean and the sheets were changed regularly. We knew that during the monsoon season there would be some bad weather on occasions, but we were a little concerned when water started to leak through our roof! Luckily the leak never ended up being too significant.

The staff were always friendly which was good, and our rep, Gerard was very helpful especially when explaining to staff about my girlfriends food allergies. The swimming pool was always clean which was good to see. The food got a little bit bland at times, but as it was a buffet this again was not surprising. We did enjoy the stir fry night a lot however! We were unimpressed when on a couple of occasions, those who were staying at the hotel seemed to get treated unfairly. We were moved to a much smaller dining room for our evening meal whenever functions were happening, and consequently given less food options at the buffet.

Overall, the Lihiniya Surf is value for money, but if you are looking for somewhere a bit more glamourous i would suggest looking elsewhere on the lovely island of Sri Lanka!

The Lihiniya Surf itself was quite nice (Never expect too much in these countries) We did however appear to be overrun with the locals at the weekend where you were not able to use the pool etc. (There was always the sea though). This however did not spoil the holiday one bit and enjojed having them around.

The local "touts" or "guides" as they like to call themselves became quite aggressive if you would not let them follow you into shops etc. We got to the stage where some of the local Tuk Tuk drivers would not pick us up unless we paid inflated prices to use them and they started giving us "One fingered" gestures when we went into town. Luckily we are fairly well seasoned travellers and not easily intimidated. We did complain to the Rep but what can he do except warn you, and he isn't going to do that is he!

Overall, Sri Lanka is a beautiful country but "Some" of the locals could quite easily spoil your holiday. Be prepared for this holiday to cost you money. If someone even says hello to you there "WILL" be a sting at the end of it. They see tourists as cash machines and will use a whole host of tricks including just being friendly to get you to part with your cash.

We went on quite a few trips and used the local travel agent just across the railway tracks for most of them. (The last shop on the right) He is well priced (Still Haggle though) Knowledgeable and willing to help in any way he can. He's also quite a good jeweller and repaired a pair of earrings we bought in the UK for my wife.

If you want to visit the local temple (Just a short walk away) DO NOT get on the local ferry until you have AGREED a price. It should only be a couple of hundred max. They will "kick off" if you get on the ferry then try to negociate.

My girlfriend and I stayed at this hotel in May. The weather was beautiful but, other than that, we were hugely disappointed with our trip.

The hotel itself is what I would describe as adequate. Certainly no frills and it's all looking a bit dated these days. The staff - while amiable - showed their worst side later on. To cut a long story short, my girlfriend was assaulted by one of their disco staff and, upon reporting this to the hotel staff, we were told that 'it was fine' and to 'not tell anyone'. The entirety of the front of house staff then proceeded to badger my girlfriend into keeping quite while she was in floods of tears. Obviously disgusted with this, we finally got to talk to the hotel manager the next day. Unwilling to help, he told us that he was not prepared to move us unless it was reported to the police in which case we would have to pay for ourselves to stay for a further 6 weeks (it was a 7 day holiday) in Sri Lanka.

Long story short, our long-suffering rep (who was a star throughout) negotiated with the hotel. The staff member at the centre of the assault was fired. However, this led to us being whispered about and pointed at by the staff for the rest of our trip. This was extremely uncomfortable and ruined any chance we had of relaxing for the rest of our trip. Frankly, I was afraid to leave my girlfriend's alone (the one subsequent occassion I did, a staff member went up to her and shouted at her for the other being fired - he was later suspended).

Having spent a large amount of time, then, in our room we did get to check out the facilities in some depth. However, it was also unimpressive at best. We had to have someone fix the TV twice and the door to the balcony did not lock. The cleaning staff however were excellent and very friendly. They felt like our few allies in an otherwise stressful and dissapointing visit.
