It is an excellent hotel. The hotel was very big, rooms were big as well and had sea and swimming pool viewing balcony. Good washrooms. Apart from the great rooms the swimming pool was great, the garden area was very big and you can relax in the garden which in also sea viewing. The restaurant served very good local and international food. Both dinner and breakfast was awesome. I would highly recommend this hotel if it fits your budget!

Room Tip: All the rooms are ocean and swimming pool facing, higher floor rooms are better

This hotel is right on the money when it comes to location, food and hospitality. We really enjoyed the option of the 2 pools - and of course the proximity of the excellent beach. It had a delectable breakfast menu that we really enjoyed. If you're looking for some time out to just relax and recharge you batteries, this is the place!

It was a lovely place with very nice rooms. But the sevice was really very slow (After ordering food at the pooside it took them more than 50 Minutes to bring a burger and fries) and stared at the guests, especially as a woman I didn't feel very comfortable to be on the poolside.
But it was still a very nice stay.

January 2014 : our stay at the Avani Beach resort was absolutely
fantastic. Very high standard of service and everybody, waiters, room-maids
reception etc very friendly. Location: at the white-sand beach and less then
5 minutes walk from town-centre All rooms we saw were looking beautiful
however our room (no.216) was a room you never want to leave.
We felt being in paradise.

Although all staff at the hotel were very friendly and well trained,
Mr. Sumal Terrance at the reception was exceptional to make feel all guests
very welcome. For sure we will come back to this hotel.

Everything about this hotel oozes class and distinction. It's a shame that it's next to the busiest train line in Sri Lanka. At 7.55 every morning, the Colombo to Galle express roars through sounding its siren before and after the adjacent level crossing!
If you don't mind waking up at or before 7.55 then this place has more to compensate for that inconvenience.
The layout, beachside position, food and service are all excellent.

Room Tip: Go poolside where the noise of the trains is slightly less.

We spent 9 nights here after a few nights in Kandy and found it to be s perfect spot to just relax. Lovely setting right on the beach, really nice building and beautifully manicured grounds. Every day, someone was gardening or doing odds and ends of maintenance and it really showed in the overall appearance which was lovely. We reserved a deluxe room and got room 102 which was just huge in size and very well appointed including UK plug sockets which was a very nice touch, with our own covered seating area opposite one of the 2 pools. The beach itself is very nice and I sort of wished the hotel had made more use of it as the sand is superb. The ocean there is really warm but quite fierce in terms of surf and quite a strong rip tide so you need to be careful in the water. 2 good size pools, one a steady 1 metre depth and the other a conventual pool. Lots of sun beds scattered through the grounds and lots of mature palm trees offering shade. The buffet restaurant for breakfast or dinner had a very good and wide selection of both western food and some delicious local curries that carried a real punch! The 2nd restaurant Frangipani is a nice setting and on first look, the menu looked a bit all things to all people and had no obvious Sri Lankan food, however, a quick chat wit the Chef Kumara and from then on in, he made a selection of truly delicious Sri Lankan curries for us when requested. A well stocked bar as well that did snacks and meals and throughout the entire hotel, the staff were very attentive, helpful and friendly. There are Tuk Tuk drivers who wait outside the from door if you want to pop into town and a group of guys right on the beach who organise tours etc for you. Overall a great place and we would not hesitate to go back.

After a choice of highway or byway from Colombo we chose the highway option only to discover that the last 10 kilometres from the highway to Aluthgama the next town to Bentota, was in total reconstruction. If they had done a bit at a time, then we might have got here a little earlier. However, the coast route would have taken hours longer so let's just go with the flow! My wife and I arrived at this hotel about lunch time and like all destinations we were a little apprehensive as we pulled into the foyer. Nothing special pretty ordinary really! Be prepared for a shock! We were welcomed with a great warmth that we have felt from these lovely genuine people! We were staying at the Avani for 15 nights and as I am writing this on our last night here, we fell that we can express our opinions with a high degree of honesty and integrity.

We knew of course that Queen Victoria built her b........y railway line as close as she could get it to the waters edge between Colombo and Galle. I would have expressed my total displeasure at this at the time, but alas time has moved on! The hotels along this part of the coast are all very close to the railway line and in order to warn people of their arrival and departure, the trains make a lot of noise, just briefly for a second or two. BUT at 0500 it can be a bit of a nuisance unless you bring your ear plugs!! However, you quickly get over the single disadvantage to be overtaken with all the lovely advantages! The rooms are very spacious and tastefully decorated with a smart TV system. Very easy for even my wife to cope with the technology to view our hotel bill! If you are struggling with sleep then you can even have the sound of lapping water at the bottom of your bed. We didn't need that one! Massive shower in the bathroom. Seems that all the rooms overlook the sea and as the sun sets in the West every night, weather permitting, you can get even a lovely sun set.

This hotel was designed by Geoffrey Bawa a British Architect and I reckon that he made a golly good job of it! Lots of Marble flooring. The spa was wonderful and although I refused to enter it on my holiday, my wife said the gym was well equipped! I did not asked too many questioned about her personal trainer Milan??? All the wooden loungers, I understand, are being replaced in the next month or two. That will be good as they are heavy to haul about to either get a few rays or try and get out of them.

Buffet breakie was good with a wide selection of food to eat. No complaints here other that the toaster could be a bit faster, just get a little bit organised and get your toast before you get your cooked breakfast!

This hotel obviously has a long relationship with some handicapped clients and it was wonderful to see how the staff simply go out of their way to help and cover all eventualities. It was so wonderful to see how they go the extra mile just to make things happen. My wife and I also felt that there was absolutely nothing that couldn't be done to make our stay with Avani more pleasurable. Everyone is so kind and lovely.

We intend to return to Sri Lanka next year and we will have no hesitation at all in choosing this lovely hotel with probably the best beach in the World a few footsteps away! Incidentally if you turn right it's about 1/2 walk to the river estuary and if you turn left then walk about 3/4 hour to Salman villas! a super luxury place that was very formal and lacked warmth. We would just stay here at the Avani Bentota any day.

All the local hotels also have a few resident Tuk Tuk drivers waiting to help you with shopping, restaurants, money changers, trips etc. I cannot end this review without also thanking our Tuk Tuk driver Chandana for helping us so much, showing us such lovely things and being part of this fabulous country Sri Lanka. He even took us to his home for a meal! Such a credit to his country and also to this lovely hotel.

Thank you Avani Bentota for a wonderful stay with you. You are all so kind and lovely people!

Room Tip: BRING ear plugs? Enjoy!!

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for your wonderful thoughts, and we truly appreciate your comments and are extremely happy to hear that you had a wonderful stay at AVANI Bentota Resort & Spa. Most hotels on the coastal belt of Sri Lanka are in close proximity to passing trains, so it isn’t really a problem that is unique to us. On the other hand, we are now getting more and more customers who making use of our great advantage of being close to the Bentota train station, and even though the trains are few and far between, they are using the train as a great opportunity to explore the heart of the south of Sri Lanka.

My team and I at AVANI Bentota Resort & Spa would be delighted to welcome you and your wife back in the near future and take this opportunity to appreciate the time you have taken to leave us such wonderful words of encouragement that would help to drive us towards striving to give the best to all our customers.

Yours sincerely,
