We really enjoyed our stay at this Hotel, its virtually on the beach with the sun going down over the sea. The swimming pools are at a perfect temperature to cool down when the temperature gets too hot!!
The staff are very friendly, and the food is superb.
Night time entertainment lets it down some, its not the most professional!! The hotel would not be the best place for children, but more mature couples or groups.
I have read the other reports regarding the trains, we were overlooking the Sea in a superior room and heard nothing.
What let the Holiday down for us, is the fact that we should of been staying at its sister Hotel which is a Half hour nearer to the Airport, and the trips that we wanted to go on, although the Avani is ONLY 60 miles from the Airport it takes 3 Hours, each way at any time of the day (the roads are chaos).
We did the trip to the Orphanage and Tooth Temple in Candy (over priced if booking through the Hotel, £190 for the 2 of us,) we had to be away be 5.15AM and did not get back until almost 10PM, and all we seemed to do is be driven all day, so keep this in mind if going to Sri Lanka and you want to get out and see the sights.
If you want a nice relaxing holiday staying in and around the Hotel I dont think you could ask for anything better than here.
When outside of the Hotel, & on the Beech you will be pestered with everyone wanting to be your friend, when they shake your hand and smile they are trying to extract money from you just be aware, but they are very friendly and am convinced that they would not rob you, but they do want your money!!!

We went to Bentota for our first anniversary and I am glad I chose Avani Bentota Resort & Spa. They upgraded us to a room which had a pool and beach view. The staff was very helpful and the service was spectacular.
The food and beverages manager helped me plan a special dinner on the beach at night and the sea and sand looked breath taking. The only thing that wasn't up to our mark was the food, the chef and the restaurant staff was amazing but the food and their menu certainly needs improvement.

Nevertheless our stay was great and if we ever go back to Bentota, we will surely stay at Avani

We stayed here for 3 days at the end of our holiday. The hotel is 4* but the location and noise made it 3* for us. Modern hotel, good food, gorgeous Pool and grass area, and from what we saw probably the best hotel in Bentota, However if we cam back to Sri Lanka we would not stay in Bentota again, probably our least favourite area. You get a lot of hassle from Beach sellers, the people aren't very friendly, and the beach isnt as nice as Hikaduwa for example. The hotel is built next to a trainline (as are most of the hotels in Bentota), so from 5.30AM everymorning it sounds like a train is coming through your bedroom.

The hotel is fab overall. Good food, clean, lovely grounds, two spotless pools, good food. Only downsides - and I'm being picky really - are:
- there is a train station just outside the hotel - trains pulling through this station always sound their horn as they pass and it is very loud and occurs during the early hours. We were woken daily.
- the room cleaners are great at cleaning and tidying but very lax when it comes to replenishing toiletries.
- there's very little in the immediate vicinity by way of restaurants. The hotel restaurants are nice but do becomea bit samey afetr a while so it's a shame there isn't more choice outside the hotel.
- the sunbeds set up is a bit of a palava - waiting around fora foam cushion, trying to get replacement beach towels. It took a bit of timeevery day to sort.
- The bar is nice - the staff are lovely - but the music and the entertainment are a bit lacklustre.

Room Tip: It might be better to get a room further away from reception - could possibly reduce noise from the...

We took a group of 45 for 6 nights after a lot of research and having followed with a tour of Sri Lanka including staying in Negombo would recommend Bentota and the Avani. It would have got 5* but for patchy customer service (see below). The +s vastly outsweigh the -s: Beautiful buildings, grounds and beach, very good breakfast and dinner buffets, large pool and plenty of recliner chairs. The village is nice with little local shops & restaurants (especially Escoffier and Diya Sisila), river nature trips, rail service to Colombo or Galle (trains not a problem in the rooms) and the beach beautiful and not too much hassle as village regulates the number via a training and "blue shirt" system. While we were there sea was quite rough but as shallow safe except for under 12 children and many of us enjoyed some body surfing.
The problem arose with out of the "ordinary" requests e.g. a la carte food, replacing face-towels, room service etc which was patchy / slow. To be fair they produced an excellent cocktail party / buffet dinner for our last night but this had a lot of senior management involvement.
So if you expect, and will feel irritated by lack of, perfect service you won't enjoy the Avani but otherwise this is a great place for a holiday.
PS Avoid the rip-off "herb and spice garden" down the road which is rip=off

The Avani Bentota is the more upmarket sister hotel of the Avani Kalutara. We stayed here as the Avani hotel was not ready for guests upon our arrival. The architecture of this hotel is beautiful. The landscape, the sea and the many coconut trees make you feel like you are in paradise. The staff are helpful and friendly. I would advise guests to avoid rooms on the ground floor as we have trouble with cockroaches over 2 days, this made our stay quite difficult. The staff were quick to treat the problem, however this was something we were not prepared for. We were transferred to the top floor, however rooms facing the main road are exposed to the trains and traffic making it less than comfortable. The hotel's spa, its 2 pools and facilities make the hotel very comfortable. During peak times it is difficult to get a ground floor table in the restaurant, and the upstairs facility is not very ambient. A lovely hotel, with great staff, but not sure i could visit again.

Room Tip: Choose sea facing rooms to avoid the freight trains and traffic. Avoid the ground floor if you don...

We enjoyed a pre-wedding stay at Avani and it was absolute bliss. This hotel has been refurbished beautifully, Geoffrey Bawa's designs as always open, inviting and completely suited to the Sri Lankan environment. The rooms are spacious, immaculately maintained and very clean. The TV system was so impressive, to have all of your accounts, music and mood options - felt all very swish. The spa facilities were fantastic and just what were needed to wind down before our big day. The sprawling grounds of the hotel, which is beach side, offer a fantastic walk and its lovely to sit with a drink in the evening and watch the waves. The food and restaurant facilities are fantastic, the pool is always inviting and all the staff are very attentive. A perfect little slice of paradise!

Room Tip: Team your trip up with a beach party or festival to enjoy the Sri Lankan beach culture.
