“Excellent Choice”
Reviewed June 3, 2010

We have just returned from a weeks holiday at Bentota Beach.

On arrival we were show to our room (507) which was large, bright, clean and comfortable the only downside was that the bed was two singles pushed together to make a double. To be honest the room was a lot better than we expected considering that it is a 3rd world country and the age of the hotel.

We didn’t eat in the hotel restaurant but instead tried a number of restaurants just outside of the hotel the one that I would recommend over and above the others is the Golden Grill (come out of the hotel gates and turn right and its a 5 min walk).

The hotel is situated just on the outskirts of the local village (couple of mins walk over the bridge), where you can find a supermarket, wine shop etc

Whilst there we booked a 2 day trip to Kandy via our holiday rep. I would recommend going to Kandy however this can be done in a day (albeit a long day) I would certainly recommend going to the elephant orphanage, the Temple and Tea Plantation.

On our final day we went on the train to Galle. The train costs approx 60p per person each way and takes approximately an hour and 15 mins to get there. Whilst at the station we met a gentleman who worked as a Tourist Guide Lecturer and he provided us with a list of places to visit whilst in Galle. Which included a turtle hatchery, tea plantation, men fishing on sticks etc

If you need any more info on Galle I suggest you contact T K Ranjith on +94 773 177100 or via email aselatoures@hotmail.com he can arrange tours, hotels, taxis, diving, entrance fees, weddings etc.

All in all a very enjoyable stay

This was our favourite of the hotels visited in Sri Lanka. We chose this hotel because of the swimming pool, large grounds and proximity to a local village or town and we were not disappointed. We had rooms on the top floor of the south wing with views over the gardens towards the ocean. The air conditioning was good and there is also a ceiling fan. Beds were fine, shower powerful and we had large balconies with 2 chairs, a table and a window seat. The room also had a window seat and had 2 windows plus the balcony door-all with wooden shutters.
The room was tatty in places, chipped tiles and battered furniture, but they are a good size with everything you would need: tv, mini fridge, in room safe, drinking water, tea & coffee making facilities. Rooms are serviced twice a day.
The nearby town of Aluthgama with shops and restaurants is just a short stroll from the hotel. Plenty of taxis & tuk tuks available outside the hotel.
The pool is gorgeous-not really suitable for small children as it is rocky and fairly deep. The grounds are gorgeous with plenty of shade from trees and a cooling sea breeze. A walk through the gardens and you're on the beach-really soft sand.
Breakfast buffet was good with plenty of choice and nice strong coffee. Most of the staff were friendly and cheerful.
We can't really understand the negative reviews-unless expectations were too high. We would definitely return to this hotel.

I had gone to this hotel with family a 7-year old and a 3 year old for a week. Although the location was good , some of the staff there were VERY RUDE. When requested to give 2 slices of bread for my little one to be eaten later, as he had not eaten his breakfast, and I had to check out that day, they refused and pointed to my older child and said, "Look, he is eating." What the hell.He had the audacity to tell this to a guest. This man with a red shirt at the restaurant (I did not note his name as I was very upset and angry) should be pulled up. It was awful. I had stayed at Taj Samudra, they went out of their way and packed some for my little one. These small things make or break the image of the hotels. My impression of the staff there was very poor . Ofcourse, some of the staff were indeed polite and helpful. Higher authorities should really look into this matter. One rotten apple spoils the entire basket. That is all I can say. We have stayed at the Bentota Beach Hotel many times as a family. It's in a good location, the hotel has a wide range of activities at the hotel to link into, the staff is attentive and the food is excellent! The hotel is situated on the beach and a lake and offers many water sports/activities for visitors.

Unfortunately our recent stay here will probably be our last. The hotel is looking tired. The bathrooms were dirty with mildew, the air conditioners smelt musty, there were a lot of mosquitoes and the room didn't have that fresh feel. We actually complained a few times regarding the state of the bathroom and we were in a Superior Suite!

The hotel has its own elephant and offers rides around the grounds of the resort. The elephant is in desperate need of seeing a vet as it is seriously ill! Its eyes are so badly infected that it could only open one slightly. It has left a horrible impression on us!

Just come back from one week at this hotel, we got married there and family spent two weeks there. We travelled with Kuoni.

First I shall start from the airport in Colombo. The journey is a very long trip, it takes approx 3.5hrs to the hotel, this was done in a small minbus, comfortable but had to request a stop on route for water, other guests mentioned to us that this was provided free of charge for them though.

Arrived at the hotel and was met with a welcome drink and a cold towel, this was a nice touch after a long journey. Check in was pain free and the bags were taken to the rooms quickly, expect to tip the bell boy though, this seemed to be the done thing.

Moving onto food, the main restaurant had a good choice, was very busy, so you had to be prepared to wait a bit sometime for drinks. You are allocated a table for the whole stay, found this a bit annoying as we were travelling with a large group of 12 and if you wanted to eat just the two of you, you were unable to have your own table. We ate in the Ala carte restaurant one night, this was included free of charge as part of our wedding package, food was lovely, but no atmosphere as we were the only ones in there!! A couple of our friends ate in this restaurant as you were given a 20% voucher to eat in there, they were not told though that it would be a different menu to the one that you pay for.

Swimming pool - this was a great pool, only downfall was there is not really anywhere to sit in a shallow area, be careful of the rocks as it seemed to stain your clothes. If you look after the attendant he will make sure that you have sunbeds during your stay in the same place and provide you with an umbrella if required.

Water sports - dont bother - the jet skis are very old and not fast, the archery guy is never there when you arrange to be there, the guys working there just didnt seem to care!!

Spa - this was okay, different!! they massage everywhere!! the staff dont speak much english though so can be hard going.

Pool bar and food - the food by the pool was very nice and quick service

Main bar and entertainment - the entertainment is just music every night, with the occasional show, but not alot, staff in the main bar can be very rude sometimes but not all the time(we found this to be very bad on the Sri Lankan New Year, more then likely because they didnt want to be at work that day) but it ruined it on a few days, I did speak to the Manager about this and he was very concerned and looked into it and after that the service improved.

Rooms - we were in a standard room which was lovely, very quiet and clean, bed was always decorated nicely and towels changed daily.

Location - the grounds and the hotel is lovely, beach could be a bit cleaner, waves are huge, but okay to swim if you are a strong swimmer, there is a strong undercurrent, watch out for stray dogs along the beach.

Wedding - The wedding co-ordinator was very professional and helpful throughout, the ceremony was lovely and we had the evening meal on the floating restaurant, this is a must, they treat you very well and all the staff made it a a very special day. No complaints at all for this, they even upgraded us to the junior suite for the wedding night, this room was lovely, but it overlooked the bar so not very quiet..

Overall - a great holiday, we would go back, but I would say compared to english hotels this is more like a 3 star..

Bear in mind this hotel is 40years old and is going to be refurbished Hotel, service and food were excellent we had upgraded to deluxe rooms they were perfect very large. The sri lankan people are warm and friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. The train line is a little near and often awake to the sound of the 4am train, however went back to sleep ok. 8 days round sri lanka and 6days at the beach, would definately go back again.
