“Loved this hotel”
Reviewed July 7, 2008

This is a lovely hotel for a relaxing holiday. I enjoyed my stay there although I've been not in a high season there (June), it rained occasionaly and the ocean wasn't calm, but you could still go in the ocean as the waves weren't too high.
The hotel has rather quiet atmosphere, except of 2 days when there was really an "invasion" of native Sri Lankans in a group of about 30-40 people (as we were told by the manager - they came for a corporative holiday just for the weekend), they were very loud near the pool, at the restaurant, in the garden - like everywhere and they were playing their national drums and other music instruments in the night...
Food is good there, with a selection of European food and spicy national food as well.
Room service not bad either, room cleaned twice a day and they put electric repellents on in the room every night.
The garden is beautiful there, they have an elephant, little chipmunks are running everywhere and also there's a big lizard.
Overall hotel is very good, but I wouldn't advice it for young singles as there's practically no entertainments in the night and generally, I went with a friend, but it was actually what we wanted - calm and relaxing atmosphere so we enjoyed it.

Beware room 801 if you want a quiet room.

We arrived after our tour, at night in the dark, and on checking in asked if we had a quiet room - yes we were told - after unpacking - we went out to look around the hotel, then realised we were quite near to the bar - again we aksed if we had a quiet room - yes from another member of staff. First night was fine, ( I suspect that the guy playing the piano on the first night gave up and went home as there was no one in the bar ) next night - yes you guessed it thump thump thump from the music at the bar.

We slept in another room after insisting we were moved, a quick trip in our night clothes, we were not offered the move. We were promised that next day a quiet room would be sorted out.

They have no customer service as we found out next day. Room 801 has been refurbished as a show piece room to sell the hotel, and believe me if you see this room and then view there rooms which are 2 upgrades higher, then room 801 is lovely and the upgrades are horible and tacky. We refused the upgrade.

Insistent on speaking to the manager we after much discussion negotiated a free evening meal with free drinks (being all of 3 soft drinks) and after further negotiation not to have to pay for the 2 soft drinks we had already bought and not paid for and after alot more negotiation not to have to pay for the rest of the drinks (being soft drinks only) - this amounted to another 2 soft drinks.

And why negotiate so hard, they lied to us that we had a quiet room, not once but twice, they lied when they said a quiet room would be ready in the morning, and they wanted us to stay in our room all day while they sorted another room out. (hello - Mr customer relations - I am on holiday and do not want to stay in my room all day)

And guess what when we came to check out, they tried to charge us for the 2 drinks we had the day before. (nice try - but i think not)

On the plus side they did give us a very large bowl of fruit (ah a tourist can be bought with such a bribe, for disturbed sleep and having to pack up and move to another room), I fed the birds and the squirrels - the hotel gets loads, and a large lizard.

I noticed the comments about the staff. We decided to stay in the same block, and kept the same room boy, who had been quite pleasant and not too pushy, as is often the norm. Unfortunately on the last day he was no where to be found, however this other guy turned up and yes all he wanted was a tip - had we seen him before - no - had he been cleaning our room - no. We were thinking of leaving a tip at reception, but thougt that he would not get it - we were probably right - after the drinks saga.

Large choice of food for the buffett breakfast, really same as other comments, same old same choice as you would find at the other beach hotels, cannot comment on the evening buffett as we ate at Waves (freshly made pizzas and lovely prawn masala - well recommended), free evening meal was nothing special (I could have done better), the meal menu did not persuade me to eat at the hotel, it was only because we got a free evening meal.

Hotel is well situated for the train station and the town of Aluthgama, also nice walk long the beach.

NOW LISTEN UP AS THIS PART IS MOST IMPORTANT - if you are looking for a really good priced massage then look no further than NIHAL situated above a small supermarket - very basic - but a wonderful massage for the equvalient of £5.00 for 1 hour's massage (sorry no bath or steam room included). To find him walk away from the bridge along the main road, if you are at the Bentota hotel you need to cross over the railway line to get to the main road, when you come out of the hotel.

Sri Lanka is a beautiful, beautiful country. But the people do nothing but nag you to buy things.
On our way to our hotel we went to see the elephant sancuary, there was a baby elephant in the middle of a pen and one of the keepers offered to take a closer picutre so I gave him my camera- but then he refused to give it back unless we paid him. On the way to the hotel I was travel sick and had to get out of the car to be sick, a women came up to me trying to sell me spices whilst I was being sick!
The minute we stepped out of the hotel we were hassled to take taxi rides, tuk-tuk rides and other services, there were people banging packs of cigarettes together on the beach to get our attention to buy the cigarettes- even the security guards tried to sell us cigarettes! The one time we ventured out of the hotel we went to the local shops and the assistants actually followed us round the shop trying to get us to buy things. I know this may sound harsh as I do realise the locals are poor and need the money but it ruined the holiday being pestered all the time.

As for the Bentota Hotel the rooms were clean and tidy. The food was not brilliant, very like bing in a canteen with everything sitting there for hours on end stewing.
When we were there the weather wasn't brilliant (nobody's fault) but there was nothing, nothing to do whilst it was raining.
The staff are very pleasant but only for the last fews day of your stay- our cleaner didn't speak to us for ten days, except on the last day ran up to us asking if we enjoyed our stay and bwing over friendly.

just returned after two fantastic weeks at the bentota. we booked this on line with kuoni and were rather concerned after booking that we recieved the foriegn office terrorism warning and then tried to change destinations but kuoni werent having any of that. so we set off veryy nervous but we neednt of worried and had no problems at all. the airport is very security aware and is very modern and efficiant . we had a private transfer to the hotel which still took 3 hours. driving is crazy but the speeds are very slow thank god.
the hotel is beautiful every thing is in easy reach. check in was smooth and efficiant. we had booked an upstais superior room which was clean and more than adiquate for our needs. views from balcony were stunning we overlooked the river and the sea was to our left.
food was beautifully prepared with a wide variety.my husband ate sri lankan currys for breakfast lunch and diner! and loved it thankyou chefs.
pool was large and clean withh plenty of sun beds around the garden also so never had problem there. we did a two day trip to national park for elephant safari which was fantastic. also visited tsunami monumnt and the mass grave.
the weather was fantastic even though it was the monsoon season and as sunworshipers we came home with lovely tan,
entertainment in evening is low key but we dont mind that
all in all i can recomend anyone to go there. it is a beautiful green country with warm happy people

Have just spent a week at the Bentota Beach following a fantastic week long tour of the island. The two interconnecting rooms that we had for the four of us were a good size and were comfortable but the furnishings were dated. The rooms were kept immaculately clean, towels and linen changed daily. The hotel is spotless, they never stop cleaning, from the windows to picking up fallen leaves in the beautiful gardens.
Food is mediocre and definitely geared to the all inclusive market with buffet meals catering for european tastes. Good snacks at poolside restaurant. There is a lovely a la carte restauarant that hardly anyone uses. Plenty of places to eat in the village so my advice is to book bed and breakfast and have a choice where to eat. Much cheaper to eat at local restaurants. Beer in hotel 400 rupees, 150 at Hotel Susantha. Price of drinks at BB increased 33% during our stay.
The best things about the hotel are its staff who are helpful and friendly and the location which is perfect. The beach is neverending although the sea is unsafe for swimming. No sunbeds on beach. There are a few sellers but they are not a nuisance and the sarongs etc are very cheap so worth a look.
The pool is lovely altho not suitable for very young children. Masses of sunbeds around the pool and gardens.

Ayurvedic centre - I had a facial which was ok, about £10.00. Very quiet, even though it was the school Easter hols here. I expected more families to be there. Not much in the way of entertainment in the evenings.

Overall we enjoyed our stay, the hotel is in need of refurbishment but cant fault the staff

This was our second time staying at the Bentota Beach. The first time was 2 years ago and we had an absolutely fabulous time. However this time we felt let down by certain aspects of the hotel. On the plus side, the rooms are very large and the setting of the hotel is beautiful. Also the staff go out of there way generally to be helpful. On the downside the hotel needs to be renovated as it is stuck in a 70's time warp. On our previous visit, there was a buffet restaurant and an ala carte restaurant. We prefer to eat from a menu rather than sitting in a canteen environment, so we chose to use the later option most evenings. This must have been the mindset of a lot of guests during our first visit as the ala carte was busy most evenings. However this time round the ala carte was deserted as the hotel has started to focus more on the All Inclusive market, which did not cover the Ala Carte option. We went twice during our second visit and to be honest I could have done a better job myself! If I go again, then I will stay at the Taj Exotica Hotel, which is next door.
