Bentota Beach by Cinnamon
Ranked #7 of 26 Hotels in Bentota
Reviewed May 4, 2011

We are a family with 3 young children who travelled to Bentota Beach Hotel in early April 2011. Whilst in the UK, we were uncertain which resort to choose from Bentota, Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa or Negombo, but after having done a tour of part of the island with our newly made friend and owner of the Diya Sisila restaurant in Bentota, we were glad we chose Bentota.

The welcome was warm with refreshing towels and cool fruit drinks. We had requested interconnecting rooms and although I had telephoned a week before to check this, we were told they would not be ready until 3 days time. But to our delight we were taken to the presidential suite now known as the Frangipani suite. Modern spacious contemporay interior with views to die for of the gardens/sea, pool. After 3 days we had the interconnecting rooms but with river views which were also good, but obviously not as spectacular as the suite views. Rooms were clean including the bathroom. Free wifi connection. Internet cafe has additional charge. Evening entertainment was always in the bar lounge eg DJ, solo musician - could have been better (although near the end of stay, there were good cultural dances)

We hadn't realised but the Sri Lankan new year was occuring during our stay and we were lucky enough to have been entertained by the hotel staff and mingled with their families during this day with traditional dances, fun outdoor games for kids and adults. Not all hotel guests participated in this which is a shame as they have come to Sri Lanka and should want to learn about the culture and people.

We didn't always eat at the hotel as we like to see the rest of the resort. The hotel breakfast was good with a large choice of hot food eg traditional Sri Lankan curries/rice/string hoppers, cereals, fruits, pastries, beans on toast, grilled tomatoes, eggs. We are vegetarian so didn't note the meat offered but we were happy with the veg breakfast. Evening buffets were also good on most days, again with a different theme on days of the week. This does get bit tedious and filling.

Try the Diya Sisila restaurant on Elpitiya Road for a quiet dinner in a great location by a river. We ate there 3 times. The owner, Nandana will serve a delicious meal at a very reasonable price and offer useful advice. We also tried the Silk Route which offers a small menu with curry or western food eg pasta.

Remember, if you are venturing out of the hotel, there will be touts waiting to take you to shops/ boat tours where they receive a commision. Also avoid using the tuk tuk (rikshaws) directly outside of the hotel as their price will be more than twice normal rate and are very persistent to sell excursions. Walk across to the main Galle Road and flag one down.
We went on an excursion with emilGayantours who was referred by Nandana. Clean comfortable car with English speaking driver (about £65 for a 16 hour day trip) Anywhere in Sri Lanka takes a long time due to road conditions and some traffic. Elephant orphanage in Pinnawela was good.

So all in all a great trip because of the friendly people and tropical surroundings. Would recommend this hotel. Many thanks to the staff -we enjoyed the new year celebrations.

Room Tip: Suites are modern with great views.

Thank you for your expressive review, we are pleased you were able to experience the traditional Sinhalese and Tamil New Year celebrations. As you correctly stated the recently refurbished hotel has renamed its presidential suite as Frangipani and we are pleased to know that you enjoyed the beautiful views of the garden, pool and sea beyond.

Went there in Feb 2009. What an amazing property. Quite a drive from the airport, no doubt but the place is amazing. The staff is so efficient and understands the guests requirements.

They helped us organize a private dinner on the beach with the Sri Lankan dancers performing. They also organized a special breakfast on my wife's request on their floating restaurant.
Both of these were naturally paid with heavy tips, but the quality was just so amazing. The food they organised so great too!

Their spa centers are quite nice too! We took their packages with discounts as that was our anniversary trip!

I was expecting my trip to Sri Lanka to be ordinary but this hotel made it a memory of my life time.

4 of us (all adults) stayed here for 3 nights at the end of a lovely 2 week stay in Sri Lanka. I thought it would be a relaxing end to a fairly active holiday.

First the good: the rooms we nice and well kept, the food was very good for large resort buffet offerings at both breakfast and dinner, reception and housekeeping staff were nice.

The main problem was the highly commercial, very plastic, unpleasant aspect to all the public areas and the general approach to the management of the place. Specifics: very few nice areas to sit/relax other than in your room or lying in on sun loungers, silly design of swimming pool with underwater rocks to bang your feet on and a narrow channel that blocks any attempt at swimming when pool is busy, very aggressive sales of wine/alcohol by bar and waiting staff (who barged into conversations to appear friendly as a prelude to sales chat), general unhelpful/surly attitude by catering staff, only indoor area to sit was the bar - air-conditioned to arctic levels and used by guests playing bingo, etc. General smell of smoking all round the place. Very few ameneties or activities other than the pool, bar - and bingo.

Overall, this was a disappointing end to a great trip. Future visitors to this area should seek out better options than we found. Lonely Planet says this place is good for undependent travellers. No longer! Now all-inclusive package market dominated. Even for a mass market hotel, the general standard and feel of the place is pretty poor.

Thank you for your observations which we will take on board for improvement, both in relation to extended product offerings for 'relaxation' and training of staff to be non- intrusive. We also appreciate your positive comments on our rooms, food and staff at Reception and Housekeeping.

This hotel was everything we expected and more. The hotel has access to the beach which is huge and empty. The staff are more than happy to help with any request. Our only frustration was with the meal service. The breakfast and dinner buffets were very good with lots of choice however there appeared to be large tour groups staying at the hotel who seemed to reserve just about every table in the restaurant. We were told by some staff some rooms had the same table for the whole 2 weeks of their stay! At breakfast we were squeezed in amongst 2 other couples whilst virtually every other table in the restaurant was empty throughout the time we ate.

Room Tip: DIrect with the hotel

Thank you for choosing to stay at Bentota Beach Hotel, the lush green gardens of the resort is enjoyed by our guests and the perfect location to work on your tan.It would appear that you stayed at the resort during the peak season, at this time the restaurant fills up during specific meal times; due to the high level of occupancy allocating seating in the restaurant is restricted.

We went to Bentota to celebrate our first wedding anniversary in Feb ... It was a splendid getaway! It's not only great value for money but the staff is very nice. They planned two very special exclusive events for us... For one, we booked the entire floating restaurant for a champagne breakfast and for the second we had a 5 course meal right by the ocean surrounded by lanterns, an intricately laid table and scrumptious food to top it all! The manager (Mr.Saman) topped our charts for helping the planning and execution of our anniversary breakfast and dinner!

Bentota, a place 60 kms from Colombo on the Colombo-Galle road is a tourist destination. The Bentota tourist resort comprises of 3-4 hotels all providing 5 star amenities right next to the beach.
The rooms are spacious and overlooking the sea. The food is very good and mainly continental since visited by european tourists.
The thing i enjoyed the most was sitting near the pool and drinking Arrack under the sun. What a feeling, completely tropical.
A must visit destination, do some water sports if u really feel like ( else just get lazy and enjoy).
It was winters thus it was pleasant. The service is excellent.
The price, the hotel charged me 15000 srilankan rupees (6000 INR) for the room which is very reasonable considering we do not get a 3 star beach resort at this price in India.
