We are a family with 3 young children who travelled to Bentota Beach Hotel in early April 2011. Whilst in the UK, we were uncertain which resort to choose from Bentota, Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa or Negombo, but after having done a tour of part of the island with our newly made friend and owner of the Diya Sisila restaurant in Bentota, we were glad we chose Bentota.
The welcome was warm with refreshing towels and cool fruit drinks. We had requested interconnecting rooms and although I had telephoned a week before to check this, we were told they would not be ready until 3 days time. But to our delight we were taken to the presidential suite now known as the Frangipani suite. Modern spacious contemporay interior with views to die for of the gardens/sea, pool. After 3 days we had the interconnecting rooms but with river views which were also good, but obviously not as spectacular as the suite views. Rooms were clean including the bathroom. Free wifi connection. Internet cafe has additional charge. Evening entertainment was always in the bar lounge eg DJ, solo musician - could have been better (although near the end of stay, there were good cultural dances)
We hadn't realised but the Sri Lankan new year was occuring during our stay and we were lucky enough to have been entertained by the hotel staff and mingled with their families during this day with traditional dances, fun outdoor games for kids and adults. Not all hotel guests participated in this which is a shame as they have come to Sri Lanka and should want to learn about the culture and people.
We didn't always eat at the hotel as we like to see the rest of the resort. The hotel breakfast was good with a large choice of hot food eg traditional Sri Lankan curries/rice/string hoppers, cereals, fruits, pastries, beans on toast, grilled tomatoes, eggs. We are vegetarian so didn't note the meat offered but we were happy with the veg breakfast. Evening buffets were also good on most days, again with a different theme on days of the week. This does get bit tedious and filling.
Try the Diya Sisila restaurant on Elpitiya Road for a quiet dinner in a great location by a river. We ate there 3 times. The owner, Nandana will serve a delicious meal at a very reasonable price and offer useful advice. We also tried the Silk Route which offers a small menu with curry or western food eg pasta.
Remember, if you are venturing out of the hotel, there will be touts waiting to take you to shops/ boat tours where they receive a commision. Also avoid using the tuk tuk (rikshaws) directly outside of the hotel as their price will be more than twice normal rate and are very persistent to sell excursions. Walk across to the main Galle Road and flag one down.
We went on an excursion with emilGayantours who was referred by Nandana. Clean comfortable car with English speaking driver (about £65 for a 16 hour day trip) Anywhere in Sri Lanka takes a long time due to road conditions and some traffic. Elephant orphanage in Pinnawela was good.
So all in all a great trip because of the friendly people and tropical surroundings. Would recommend this hotel. Many thanks to the staff -we enjoyed the new year celebrations.
