“This hotel has real potential to be a little taste of paradise”
Reviewed October 9, 2009

We stayed for only 3 nights at Saman Villas at the end of our holiday in Sri Lanka. The people we met around Sri Lanka had told us that Saman was the number one hotel on the island, and I can see why. The location is beautiful - a secluded, gated development, on a rocky outcrop of the Indian Ocean. It has exceptional facilities, and the staff were very attentive.
The room had everything we needed, and was really well set up (in fact I'd like a flat here like it please!).
You have to give this hotel the benefit of the doubt. September isn't high season, and so we were only the second of two couples that were resident. We had the pool to ourselves each day which was lovely! However, in the evening there was no atmosphere whatsoever, as there was no one else around! The staff were very bored all day and it showed. And the menu for dinner was limited. Thankfully, we stayed B&B and so chose to go out each night for dinner as there was nothing else to do in the hotel. The prices were considerably marked up, but given you were in an exclusive resort, you expect that, and when converting back into GB£ is wasn't enough to make a big deal about.
This hotel has real potential to be a little taste of paradise, and so probably best experienced in the height of the tourist season.

We have just returned from our honeymoon and this was the second hotel we stayed at.

Good Points

Very Welcoming and showed us straight to our room

Location is nicer in the south

Room were clean and cleaner was excellent and cleaned twice a day and also controlled the mosquittos, we got upgraded to a room with a private pool after asking on the second day over looking the sea which was lovely.

The food was very good but overpriced so thats why we chosed to eat out of the hotel the average price to eat in the hotel was £40 - £50 which dont sound too bad but when we were eating out of the hotel for food and drink it was between £12 -£14 big difference, there isnt many places to eat in bentota we went to 3 and reccomend them all
Golden Grill
Waterside Hotel
Susanths (next to the golden grill)

Spa was excellent but very overpriced exspect to pay £60 plus for a treatment

Staff were lovely but very board as there was no one in the hotel

Turtle hattchett was good but go with a tut tut as cheaper than rep

Bad Points

Weather very windy and not the best in september

Beach was very dirty and not nice to look at annd the sea was rough

Everything overpriced in the hotel

Jewellery shop harassing you everytime you walk past

The hotel is situated with nothing around it and 3 hour transfer from the hotel.

No entertainment

All in all we went for 5 days and this was more than enough, prepare to be board and totally relaxed would reccomend to go bed and breakfast and not half boad as its cheaper to eat out and will save you alot of money

We thank the visitor for the comments and we are pleased to note that guests have found our food and spa treatment to be very good. Furthermore, we are very pleased to note that our guest would recommend Saman Villas to a friend.

However, the comments on food and spa prices do not seem to be accurate. Prices are an important element and we have been cautious about our overall price increases particularly during this crucial time of the recession.

Food
Generally guests are not known to visit the restaurants referred to in the review. In fact, they rarely go out for dinner, due to hygiene factors and also because we offer a vast choice of menus with reasonable pricing.

We conform to the highest food safety standards and use the best raw materials. Saman Villas is an ISO 22000 food safety management certified hotel and only two other hotels in Bentota have this certification.

We may be one of the few small hotels in the world (we have 27 rooms) which offer three separate a la carte menus for dinner with a total selection of 61 menu items.

Food prices are reasonable and our records indicate that most guests who order a la carte take a three course meal. Prices of a three course meal inclusive of a starter or soup, main course and dessert inclusive of 10% service charge and 13% government tax are as follows.

1.A vegetarian menu at the lowest is U$ 18.20/GBP 11.20 and highest is U$ 26.00/ GBP 16.00

2.An Asian menu at the lowest is U$ 20.00/ GBP 12.30 and highest is U$39.70/ GBP 24.40

3.A European menu at the lowest is U$ 27.00/ GBP 16.60 and highest is U$ 56.60/ GBP 34.80.

4.A four course Set Menu is U$ 39.40/ GBP 24.30.

The highest priced three-course European meal costs only U$ 56.60/GBP 34.80 which includes a main courses such as Australian Prime Beef, New Zealand Lamb or Jumbo Prawns. For an additional U$ 10.40/ GBP 6.40 you may select the most expensive dish, Lobster for the main course.

Saman Villas offer a vast choice of menus in the price range of U$ 18.20/ GBP 11.20, lowest to U$ 67.00/ GBP 41.20 (US$ 67.00), highest for a 3-course meal.

Spa
Treatments at the spa are priced reasonably when compared to Spas of similar standard.

Prices of treatments per hour range from U$ 60.00/ GBP 37.00 to U$ 84.00/GBP 52.00. In addition discounts of 20% and 35% is offered to the second person based on treatment prices while additional discounts of 10% to 15% is offered based on the total value of spa treatments taken.

In September 2009 after a comprehensive visit to Spas in Asia, a comparison was carried out with similar or lower category Spas and treatments per hour range from U$ 103.00/ GBP 63.00 to U$ 122.00/ GBP 75.00 as compared to our prices ranging from U$ 60.00/ GBP 37.00 to U$ 84.00/GBP 52.00

When compared to other boutique hotels in Asia of similar standard, we are confident that Saman Villas is not overpriced.

Thank you

We stayed here for 9 nights on the final leg of our honeymoon. We had a great time. We had a room with a private pool overlooking the sea. The room was amazing, with all the expected class of a 5 star resort. The room was perfectly clean and the room boys made different arragements of flowers on the bed every day. The bathroom had a slightly dated suite but was very clean and had an open air shower and large bath. The credit crunch and political situation has hit Sri Lanka's tourism and for most of our time at Saman Villas we were the only people in the entire hotel. The staff were great and the restaurant was excellent. We did not leave the hotel at all as we had already ready toured the country. It was a beautiful place and i could not recommend a stay here more!!

A charming small hotel. On arrival we were offered a complimentary foot massage which I accepted fully expecting to be given the hard sell, however I was pleasantly surprised that I was not given any. The rooms were fantastic our room overlooked the sea; the bathroom was large and had a private outside shower. The bed was huge and twice a day was made up beautifully with flowers in the morning and little coconut palm origami effects in the evening. The only problem was that we didn’t want to use the bed and spoil it. The indoor lounge area was comfortable and the air conditioning second to none. Drinking water was provided however no tea or coffee making facilities were provided which we would have appreciated. There did not appear to be any laundry facilities available. Outside there was a covered seating area and two day beds near the swimming pool. Mosquito control was good in and around the rooms and when I was bitten whilst sitting outside the dining area the waiter provided us with an anti mosquito device. Our room pool was ideal for me as whilst it was small you could swim in it. There was a larger pool in the main hotel area. Swimming in the sea is dangerous and not recommended by locals. The sea is deceptive and may look calm but has a strong undercurrent and sudden strong waves. When the tide is out the beach is great for runners. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was not particularly good. Cocktails were expensive and the white wine list was limited and pricey, in the end we just drank water with our meals. The bar was supposed to remain open until midnight however one night we came back at ten o’clock after dining with friends only to find everything locked up.

I had longed to stay in this hotel for several years but was rather disappointed by my recent experience here -- perhaps my expectations were too high.

The best thing about this hotel is its location, situated on a rock promontory flanked by 2 secluded beaches. Having said that, it is a 3 hours drive from Colombo airport. Also the hotel does not have its own part of the beach -- all sunbeds are around the swimming pool.

The beaches are lovely to look at from a distance but in reality are filthy with rubbish. We could hardly walk on the beach for more than 5 minutes without being hassled by beach touts. We found this rather intimidating as these touts kept following us, asking questions and acting as local guides trying to get money from us.

The hotel is in a rather open location and anyone could get in from the beaches. Certainly the hotel has employed security guards to keep watch and we were advised to lock the front door at night as well as the bathroom door as the bathroom is located outside..

We stayed in a superior room on the upper floor of a villa which offered a great view from the balcony. Some deluxe rooms on the ground floor have swimming pools but not really private as they can be overlooked from the room above.

The hotel is classified as 5 star but the decor in the room hardly so, being rather dated. Comfortable but by no means luxurious, apart from the Bose surround-sound music system. I am not quite keen on the idea of using the outdoors toilet and shower, particularly in the middle of the night. In fact I managed to kill half a dozen of huge mosquties in the outdoors bathroom in just one evening.

My friend found it relaxing to hear the waves hitting the rocks at night, but to me, it sounded like a storm brewing outside.

Compared to other hotels I stayed in Sri Lanka (Beach Hotel Negombo, Vil Uyana and Mahaweli Reach which are also classified as 5-star), this hotel is the most expensive of all, both accommodation and food. However food quality was disappointing. I was served burnt rice in my Nasi Goreng, cold crepe suzette; appetisers and desserts were relatively small in portion.

The Sahana Spa offers serene surroundings in 2 private treatment courtyards. I preferred the most spacious pool courtyard where one could relax in the sound of flowing water. My masseur was most attentive and gave superb ayurvedic and aromatherapy massages. However being outdoors, I ended up with a number of mosquito bites after the massage sessions.
