“Good place to relax”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2013

Me and my wife stayed there in April 2013 for 2 nights. Had a great time. Food was great the staff was very helpful. They were always there when we needed them. But did not give the feeling that they were always around. Which was a good thing.
The food was great.

The hotel will take your breath away the moment you walk into the lobby. The infinity pool overlooks the ocean and will have you transfixed till you are ushered to your room. I was lucky enough to get a room with an attached private pool so it was again in a different league of luxury. Almost all the rooms face the sea so nobody will complain. They even have an attached beach which is a nice walk over the undulating grounds of the hotel. Because it is meant to be such a getaway, there are no buffets in the hotel...every thing, every meal is a la carte. That takes a bit of time, especially if you're hungry after a swim. But the food tasted good, from the sandwiches to the nasi goreng to the local Sri Lankan pork and mutton curries. It was a great stay and quite a hole in the pocket with 450$ per room.

I stayed at the Saman Villas from August 23rd to the 29th...it was a great experience. The resort is perfect...quiet, well situated, stunning views, attentive staff.....

I had a deluxe room with a private pool...it was well worth the extra cost per night and I would highly recommend it.

Breakfast was included and the selection and quality of food was great....the staff quickly came to know my name and what my preferences were....this goes a long way to making you feel special.

The room was very spacious and well appointed....great sound system too. The bathroom was huge and included a great soaking tub and an outdoor shower. The bed was very comfortable. The room included both an indoor and outdoor seating area, sunbeds and umbrella, and of course the private infinity pool overlooking the beach.

I had dinner at the resort three nights while I was there and again the selection and quality was top notch.

I would highly recommend Saman VIllas and can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Get a room with a pool!

Set on a small peninsula jutting into the ocean with two beaches stretching either side of the hotel, it is a great location. Only 28 villa / rooms so small enough to be very personal where all the staff recognize you and have the typical friendly Sri Lankan approach to service.
Dining room has views from all sides and the food was exceptional, with the chef coming around to introduce himself and check on your satisfaction. Wide selection of courses of international and local fare - curries are nice and spicy.
Rooms are spacious with good size balconies unless you have your own pool and then you have a garden.
Take a walk along the beach to the north and stop at a turtle hatchery - you can watch them being released in the evenings. Takes about 1.5 hours to get to the very end of the beach but hardly a sole on the beach with you.
The spa is also excellent but as with some places only a male to massage a male and female for female. It's a religious matter.

My wife & I spent out wedding anniversary at Saman Villas. We experienced a class of service that was simply outstanding. we have been to many exotic locations and stayed in lovely hotels but have never experienced such a personalised service. The location, the villas and the food were well complemented with the service.

A must visit property !

We booked this hotel for 2 nights as part of our honeymoon. The reviews we read were great. The location is great. I have to warn other travellers however, that you need to pick your time carefully. We went out of season. Which usually is not a problem for Sri Lanka. Generally good weather and service still good. Unfortunately this was not the case for Samman Villas. We went there in July. The staff were bored and unenthusiastic. Lots of renovation work going on. I have to add we payed full rate so it was not like they had an excuse. Manger really not very helpful.

The rooms are now dated compared to other five star hotels

So my advice would be to go in peak season. I wonder if previous good reviews have made them lazy. We stayed in 4 other hotels during our stay. This was no were near the best so don't feel that this is must for all those looking for a bit of luxury.

The Spa is very good and reasonable price for treatments.

We thank the reviewer for their recent stay at Saman Villas and commending the location and our spa.

While there was no ongoing refurbishment work during July 2013, in view of low occupancy we were carrying out a treatment programme inside the suites for termites. We deeply apologize for disturbance caused to the reviewer by the sounds of the drills. Upon receiving the complaint from the reviewer we immediately halted the treatment programmes. We generally close the hotel for short periods to carry out refurbishment work as we do not want our guests been disturbed, however general maintenance work such as painting is carried out several times during the year due to the heavy sea breeze.

May to end July is considered as low season on the south west coast, and our guests have the option of making use of the best offers during this period. Despite the seasonality the service offered to guests remains unchanged. We regret to note the reviewers comments about our staff been board and unenthusiastic. The overall rating and comments on staff and service is rated very highly. This is evident by the reviews posted by other reviewers on TripAdvisor.

Saman Villas undergoes a major refurbishment every 4-5 years and the last major refurbishment was in 2010 covering all suites and public areas. Saman Villas simply cannot be compared to a five star hotel; the concept and design is derived from ancient Sri Lankan temple architecture with rustic elegance elements, combined coupled with modern conveniences. Saman Villas is a typical deluxe boutique resort and spa with 27 suites spread out in over 3 acres on land and surrounded by lush green vegetation, we offer an intimate and personal experience to guests.

Saman Villas is one of those places that can be considered a paradise on earth. Yes, it's a bit pricey but it is well worth the money you spend. The sea covers you on all sides and the nights are silent, far away from everything.

The service is extraordinary. Everything one might need is provided for with a smile. The entire property is meticulously kept clean and everything is well maintained. The beaches are easily accessible as well

Room Tip: Ask for a room with an attached pool. It's costlier but worth it

Saman Villas is laid out on a magnificent rocky headland dividing two long, surf-swept golden beaches. Close by is a sleepy fishing village but you would not know it, the only sounds are sea gulls' cries and the surf below. The resort is inspired by ancient Sri Lankan architecture. The restaurants, bars and villa suites are all angled to take full advantage of the sea shore vista either side of the headland.
