We stayed in Suite No.3 upstairs at the farthest end of the hotel with a large private terrace and a humongous bathroom. The hotel was still new, only 6 months old, and still undergoing renvoations and remodeling, but for the most part the place was finished. No question, Paradise Road has achieved yet another successful mark on its list of properties, as this could possibly be one of the nicest Beach Villas I've stayed at.
Things I LOVED...
Expansive lawns, super clean swimming pool, generous outdoor seating areas and pavillions all tastefully decorated, plush towels and linens, a large collection of local and foreign artwork on display, and a romantic candlelit restaurant. The thin-crust pizzas make an amazing snack by the pool paired with a Lion lager or some homemade ginger beer--so refreshing! It's a 2 minute walk to a secluded beach across an active railway track that provides some entertainment when dining by the pool or under a lawn tent (very safari-esque). I also fell in love with the lavendar-rosemary-mint soaps and lotions. You can purchase them at the Tintagel Hotel or at the Paradise Road Gallery Shop in Colombo.
Things I liked...
Spacious rooms, good sized modern bathrooms iwth perfect water pressure and lots of hot water, a minibar, safebox,in-room wifi, incense jars & mosquito repellent, and extra luggage racks--a double room should always have more than one luggage rack, don't you think? The rooms also had LCD tvs, although this should never be necessary when traveling on VACATION ; ) All the meals were delicious, both Western and Sri Lankan, and given the romantic ambience, I think premium pricing is fair. After all, this is not a place you travel often to. Best of all, the service was amazing! While we sat by the pool, there was always someone watching discreetly over us to make sure all our needs were attended to. They even gave us a little brass bell to ring! It actually felt a bit over-indulgent so we nver bothered to ring it, but the thoughtfulness was appreciated.
Things to improve...
The floor in our room and on our terrace was not as clean as we'd like so we had to wear slippers all the time. We did find the pool to be extremely clean and there were gardeners trimming the lawn and housestaff constantly sweeping leaves off the walkways which was good. Some of the bedding also smelled a bit musty, but I attribute this to lack of guests during low season (we were the only guests at the hotel that night). Lastly, our room had a very severe black & white stripe theme going on: bedding, cushions, wall paint, etc. It made us feel a bit like we were stuck in a prison...or even a whimsical Tim Burton movie. I know that the B/W theme is a hallmark of Paradise Road, and coming from Singapore where B/W colonial houses are prized properties, I am surprised that it turned me off. I stayed at the sister hotel Tintagel in Colombo which also is decorated with stripes, but for some reason didn't bother me as much. Regardless, all are minor issues which can be remedied very easily.
Overall I would highly recommend this hotel to travelers who appreciate luxury and service. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Villa Bentota and would definitely love to return again!
