Having read all the reviews on TA we had pretty high expectations. Diya Sisila did not disappoint us. In fact we were blown away by the friendly relaxed atmosphere, the fantastic food and the lovely setting. Nandana the host was very friendly and easy-going. We're staying in one of the 5* hotels in Bentota where the staff are lovely but very yes-sir, please-sir etc which is great but it was nice for a break. Nandana is the kind of person you can have a normal chat with.

The place was spotlessly clean and with it being right on the lake/river it has the perfect location.

The restaurant is a short tuk tuk ride (5 mins) inland from the coast road. Take your own alcohol from one of the wine shops in nearby Aluthgama (they don't have a license yet) and don't eat much the meal before. We had the prawns and chicken - both packed with subtle slow-cooked flavour. An excellent restaurant.

Amazing simple cooking at its best, sea food to die for.

Great location, great owner (Nandana), the prawns have to be eaten to truly appreciate the flavours, so succulent.

What a refreshing change from hotel buffets! Fantatistic fresh seafood in a spectacular setting with attentive and wonderfully friendly service. As you've heard from other reviewers, you must call the day before so he can buy your fish. Get there while it's still light, because the view is unbelievable, and there's no better time to be there than sunset. Don't be in a hurry.

When we were planning our Honeymoon trip in Sri Lanka December 2010 we wanted to stay a few days on the southern coast. The choices of towns are endless and the further down you go the better the beaches or so we read here and on other travel sites. Being the food lovers we are, we finally set our minds on Bentota, if only to try this restaurant as we have never seen so many positive reviews for one restaurant. And what a surprise we had ahead of us!

Little did we know when we called the number on trip advisor for Nandana, the smart and cheerful owner of the restaurant that we were going to make a real friend ! He could tell right away from our accent and perhaps the name that we were from Lebanon.

Nandana came to pick us up and treated us to a meal of the best and freshest lagoon prawns with garlic lemon sauce along with vegetable basmati rice. The food was magical. The night was magical. And Nandana came and sat with us and we talked about his experiences in Lebanon and Germany before he came back to his town to start this restaurant business and becoming the local celebrity he is. We booked again for the next day this time we asked for lobsters and we were not disappointed. There was a birthday party and live music, and we ended up joining the party and we danced and stayed till midnight!

Nandana even offered to pick us up from the hotel next morning (we were leaving same day) and take us in a tour to a real herbal pharmacy after we told him about some medicinal herbs we got from the "herb and spice garden" and realized we got ripped off. He also took us to his friend's wood workshop and gemstone shop and we enjoyed the day together!

We started our Sri Lankan adventure in Bentota and had our first two dinners at Diya Sisila's restaurant, it raised the bar so much that we couldn't enjoy any meal afterwards as nothing was up to standard! To the point were we seriously considered taking a taxi from colombo to bentota (3-4 hrs) for only one more dinner at Diya Sisila's!

This is a place for a taste of good food and good life.

We promise you that you will never see or eat prawns as big or as tasty anywhere in the World. We also heard the crab was fantastic and fully prepared for you. Requst a table on the lagoon, watch the owner cook the prawns in his kitchen, ask lots of questions and take your own wine. Enjoy the experience.
