“Great place to stay!”
Reviewed June 29, 2010

TGG is a great place to stay. You can actually go to their website and choose the room you want to stay in. Don't let the name "guesthouse" fool you--the room is very spacious, modern and comfortable. The location is very convenient. You're a stone throw away from the harbor and waterfalls, and there are lots of nice restaurants nearby to choose from. Peter and Sylvia are great! They suggested great places to eat and provided helps with direction. They are such warm & helpful folks, they make our stay in Seogwipo absolutely a pleasure!

We absolutely loved the TGG. First, their website is wonderful and you are able to look at what each room looks like and pick which room you want. Second, the rooms are very modern and clean. We stayed in a western style room that had a view of the harbor, which was gorgeous. The bathroom was a step above many of the other places that we stayed at in Korea as it was completely separated by the toilet by a glass wall. Some toiletries were also provided. The floors can be heated, which is nice in the morning. There was a mini fridge in the room.

Common areas included a kitchen where breakfast, which is included with the room, is served. Breakfast included cereal, bread, yogurt, bananas, home made jam, milk, and OJ. Sylvia also keeps a few of those instant noodles around in case you are craving a midnight snack. There is a laptop in the kithcn that has free internet. There is also ample free parking right in front of the hotel. Be sure to check out the roof top deck which also has gorgeous views of the harbor.

Finally, in addition to the inn being lovely and clean, the owner, Sylvia, is also extremely kind and helpful. She helped us find our way around town and even arranged one of our tours for us. She clearly enjoys running the inn and makes every effort to get to know all of her guests.

All in all, I would definitely stay here again and would recommend this to anyone who will be traveling to Jeju.

Having lived in Korea for 9 years, a country that doesn't get large numbers of foreign tourists, struggles with a badly run tourist board and suffers from the fact many Koreans don't speak English, it is refreshing to come across something as well setup as the TGG Inn. It was my 6th visit to Jeju, but this choice of accommodation made it the best yet.

No corners have been cut - bed covers, bathrooms, TV's, aircon machines etc etc are all top quality. The kitchen offers snacks, cereal, bottled water, coffee and more with a TV and internet access. On the roof there are sun beds with fine views and out the back tangerines wait to be picked. However, the icing on the cake is the lovely Sylvia. Extremely kind, full of knowledge and with a great sense of humour, she made our trip so much better. She had an answer for everything and was a great help. She personally walked us down to the fishing boat we had hired and when I left my phone in reception she brought it to the horse meat restaurant she had recommended for us! She is Wonder Woman! Big thanks to Sylvia and Peter from Nick, David, Chris, Scott and Henry.

stayed in TGG for 2 nights in April. Warmly greeted by Peter on our arrival and Peter also let us to a very local restaurant for dinner that night. Sylvia and Peter tell you everything in little DETAILS. Guess we are one of the most troublesome guests as we asked so many questions about where to visit and how to get to this and that destinations. Sylvia wrote us in both Korean (for showing to bus driver or any locals) and English (for us to understand), then we don't have trouble finding where we are going. I still keep those sweet notes from TGG.

We chose Room105, which is floor heated room, which we really wanted to try. With a clean mattress and a cozy blanket, we feel so warm. But maybe I'm not used to sleeping on a heated floor, very thirsty at night. I had to prepare a bottle of water within reach. The TV's very good quality and the shower's perfect too. Even from the cute toilet paper (with Teddy Bear printed), you can see how much effort the owner has been put into. The benefit of living on the ground floor is that you are close to everything - the public area where you have your free breakfast and internet, even free instant noodles, the water cooler, the laundry, and Sylvia!!! you can ask questions easily.

One thing I have to mention is that Sylvia is like your sister, she really cares about if you'll enjoy the trip. She gave us so many advises, even when something she cannot tell you instantly, she'd call someone or google it for you. And when I felt headache the other day, she even offered painkiller.

so many sweet memories at TGG. I hope Sylvia can get more rest everyday.

BTW, TGG is very close to Bus600, which can take you to the main tourist area. And it's about 10mins walk to the Seogwipo-bus terminal, where you can take bus to Jeju-si, and Halla Mountain.

TGG is a guesthouse, which i can say, is a lot better than hotel stays, if only for its warmth and very personalized service from no less than its owner, sylvia, and her very dependable friend peter. Prior to our arrival, we had trouble securing our domestic ticket flights from gimpo to jeju. Sylvia made it all possible for us to get to jeju by coordinating directly with asiana airlines for our tickets. She never got tired exchanging e-mails with me regarding a lot of things, and even promptly at that. She guided us on our jeju itinerary and even ensured that our tour package and accommodation in the the east jeju area guesthouse have been properly arranged and confirmed. On our arrival, she even arranged for a traditional korean dinner at a nearby restaurant and guided us on the tourist spots within the area. TGG's pantry normally provides toasts, jams, eggs and coffee for breakfast. But when i asked sylvia if hot water can be provided because we intended to buy noodles for breakfast, she herself bought the noodles for us in a matter of minutes, at no cost to us! That was so sweet of her. As for the room we stayed in (302), it had a queen sized bed with a spacious ondol heated floor for korean type of beddings for extra persons. After a tiring day, the ondol floor provided my back the relaxation it needed. Upon waking up in the morning, we were greeted by the wonderful sight of the seogwipo harbor. After breakfast, we had some fun taking pictures at her orchard with tangerine trees and a bed of canola flowers. Only 7 minutes away from TGG is Oedolgae, the lone, towering piece of rock surrounded by beautiful islands of jeju. The place provides a serene walking path overlooking the rock, which is part of Route 6 of the famous Jeju Olle (walking tour). The place was also used as a filming location for the korean drama series Daejangguem (Jewel in the Palace). Sylvia even followed us in our visit to Oedolgae, to prod us to hurry as our bus for the east tour was already waiting. Up to our last minute of stay in TGG, sylvia and peter did a great service to us. We love their place, but we love them even better! :)

Tae Gong Gak really lives up to its name. It is really a very cozy and comfortable place, just like home!! The moment you step into the place, you are able to feel the warm hospitality from the staff. Sylvia and Peter immediately greeted us with smiles and even remembered that we are arriving today. The service, I would say is excellent!!

The place is very clean and we had a good room with great view of the Seogwipo Harbor. Every morning, we would be able to enjoy the fresh air. If it gets too cold, you would be able to warm yourself with the ondol floor heating system and even the air conditioner that emits warm air. Although we are away from home, we could really enjoy the environment and instantly felt that TGG is a home to us. The bathroom is very clean and they even provide some basic toiletries. What really amuses us is that the toilet papers even had printed cartoons on it :D This is indeed something to cheer us up. The bed is very comfortable and not even a day is a sleepless night. We stayed for 5 nights in TGG and every single day, we wake up feeling fresh and energized.

In terms of location, I would say that it is strategically located. The airport limousine bus stops right in front of Sun Beach Hotel, which is just next door to TGG. Restaurants are within the vicinity and you may just walk around to find for food. There are also a couple of attractions within walking distances, for example the Jeongbang Waterfalls, Seogwipo Harbour. Oedolgae is also nearby. So if you do not have much time left on your first day of arrival, just head off to these places. Other amenities nearby are the Family Mart and there's also the pharmacy.

What I like best about TGG is they are very flexible and helpful. As we are not really big eaters, after a couple of days, we really wanted to have a simple meal on our own. We bought some instant noodles from a nearby mini market and they are very nice to allow us to borrow their kitchen and cook our own meal. We also had fun washing our own clothes using their washing machine and dry our clothes on level 3. The pantry is also open 24 hours, so whenever you are hungry, just pop by the pantry to find something for a munch. They even make their own organic home made tangerine jam, so do remember to try the famous Jeju tangerines and tangerine jam. It is indeed delicious. What we never regretted is to pay a few bucks extra for a room on the higher floors as the view is splendid, facing the Seogwipo Harbor.

Thank you Sylvia and Peter!! Whenever we need help or advice, you are always there to help us. Thank you for arranging the flight tickets and car rental for us. Without your help, we would not be able to get such great deals and enjoy our honeymoon fully. I really would recommend anyone to stay in TGG. Really, like what the other reviews said, don't bother looking for other places. TGG is the place to be. Your money is well worth it. We really had a great honeymoon and we are looking forward to come back to Jeju in the future and stay in TGG again.

Words of my review will not suffice to applaud the dedication, warmth, love and effort that Sylvia (wife of Prof Jang) and her v good, old friend Peter have flooded into making Tae Gong Gak Inn an incredible guesthouse. We stayed there for 3 nights, travelling as a group of 7 - my parents in their 60's and 3 kids aged 12 mths, 3 and 9. Prof Jang whom I had emailed was away most of the time so I missed the opportunity of thanking him for making the arrangements for us (he has a different email). He introduced this jolly fella whom we called Mr Kim (who should be nicknamed Mr Smiles) who chauffeured us around in a 14 seater bus! His command of English was limited but we managed with his mobile phone translator and our Korean phrase bk (he helped us order fried chicken for our fussy kids delivered to a seafood restaurant with a very limited menu). Occasionally, he rang Sylvia at TGG for her help in translating.

At Tae Gong Gak, the breakfast menu varied. On the morn as we were about to leave and checkout, Sylvia thrust a Pyrex bowl of abalone porridge into my hands ... "this is for your kids. U came down so late. There would be none left for your kids if I did not save this for you. Heat it in the microwave now and eat before U leave", and indeed, there was not a single morsel left in the bigger pot in the breakfast room. On one morn, there was some steamed dumplings too. There were other incidents which made me realize how much went into running Tae Gong Gak. I realized the long hours they worked when I noted their weary faces as I saw them cleaning up the kitchen past midnight because of a mess made by some travellers having a late supper as I came down to Reception to leave a message. "We wanted to make sure our other guests have a clean kitchen in the morning." I felt bad about rtning late from Emart to get some UHT milk (Korea has Hershey's choc milk made in Korea) for our kids last minute to prepare for our Shanghai trip and asked what time the inn locks its doors ("when the last guest has safely returned" was their answer) so I asked Sylvia about what motivated her into running Tae Gong Gak. She had recently renovated the bldg which previously belonged to her late mother 8 mths ago, who also previously ran as a guesthouse. There was unforgettable sentiment when she spoke. With 3 kids living in Michigan and Prof Jang away in Seoul teaching sometimes, I realized how much she must love Tae Gong Gak and why she decided to take over the business from the other manager and is striving some hard and with pride to make it feel like "a home where the heart is" for the weary travellers who have the fortune to find her little gem.

The rooms vary - for group travellers, I noted an empty rm with 3 double bunk beds. We had 2 rms with what I think were queen sized beds with ondol heating - the latter consisted of flooring (it was like a vinyl wrap of heated stone slabs) with individual controls in each room. My 2 older kids loved sleeping on the thin but comfy foldable mattresses provided together with doonas/quilts. Shower facilties were brand new with good water flow. A cleaner attends daily. There are laundry faciltiies which travellers can help themselves to. There is internet access at Reception as well as the breakfast room/kitchen.

The website is www.taegonggak.com which somehow defaults to www.leportel.kr
If U ring, [--]
Sylvia's email address is sylviahj@hotmail.com acc to the business card
There are only 15 rms, one of which has a kitchenette so interested travellers need to book early. We had the surprise of our lives when we ran into our work colleague who spent the same 3 nights we stayed, mutually unaware of each other's itinerary all the way from Melbourne ... thanks to good pretravel research. Other travellers found it convenient that there was a tour bus that picked them up from the guesthouse nearby that offered a day tour on alternating days to East and West Jeju. Bus 600 is like Cinderella's pumpkin coach that drops passengers conveniently diagonally opposite Tae Gong Gak. We went for a feast of gluttony and the Volcano Light Show at Loette Hotel, so Bus 600 travels there for a minor fare (2000 or 3000 KRW from memory). Bus 600 also runs from Jeju airport (I think the fare is only 5000 KRW but check - Mr Smiles met us at the airport)

I wish Sylvia, Prof Jang and Peter every success and reward with growing Tae Gong Gak towards their aspirations. I would not hesitate to recommend it to my family members, friends and fellow Trip Advisor surfers. It is natural Korean hospitality that is so genuine and fine that cannot be bought ... surpassing our stay at other 4-5 star hotels. The warmth of the hospitality is like the warmth radiating from their ondol much appreciated in a foreign land where there is little English spoken and amidst the cold of the autumnish weather we experienced, as reflected by the various accolades and personal memos that decorate their walls. It is good value for amenities, bearing in mind the cost of living in Korea (which we found comparable to Aust when it came to some food and shopping for most items ... so we had limited shopping booty).
