My wife and I spent 3 nights at the Hotel Hyundai in Gyeongju. Our bags were taken in from the taxi, and check in was very smooth. So far so good. Everyone was professional, and very friendly. But it went down from there. We had a lake view room, and the view was fantastic. The room was another story. You could see that no up keep had been done. The carpet was worn, and the paint was chipping on the balcony. The shower stall had mould, and needed a good clean, after one day, the kettle switch broke. We spoke about it to the front desk, and they moved us to another room. It was a little better, but not much. The shower stall needed cleaning, and the room needed a new coat of paint. In fact the entire hotel could use a new coat. The breaktfast buffet was nothing to jump up and down about, and we only ate there once. The best thing about the hotel was the service. It was tops, it's just ashame the hotel let them down. Management needs to put some money back into the hotel.

The hotel enjoys a very good view on the lake, but the position seemed to me a bit far from the places one could have liked to visit. In any case, I had no time for sightseeing if not with the organization of the Congress, so this was not so important.
The hotel is good, has ample spaces for a Congress or for business meetings, but the personnel - very, very kind, nothing to say about it - should have a better knowledge of English, not to say of some other Western language.
Rooms are ample, service absolutely quick and efficient, good beds. Ample bathroom with this funny WC I adore since my first experience in Japan. I'm told the spa was good, but I did not visit it.
I cannot speak of the reastaurants of the hotel (nor of the city) because all was very well organized, also lunches and dinners at the Hotel during the Congress, so I had no occasion to look around as I like to do.
The breakfast is the weak point: the space is not sufficient, the buffet is organized in a way I could not understand, food was good but always the same. An hotel pretending to the fifth star has to improve it asap.
I found it funny that the breakfast room personnel seemed to panic everytime they saw our delegates approaching, because writers are undisciplined people (and Koreans are the opposite)
In any case, a very pleasant stay, thank you, Korea.

Travelers to Gyeongju who are looking at international brands like the Hilton should include the Hotel Hyundai in their considerations - although the decor and general ambiance went out of date in the early 90s, the hotel is very well maintained and run, offering a generally very positive experience.

The location by the lake is exceptional, and everything else fits in with the 'resort' vibe - multiple dining venues etc. - and the whole place is evidently geared around organised tour groups who don't care much about trendy design features.

However if you are on business and just looking for a decent value place to sleep in a professionally fun establishment, you might find it works for you as well.

This hotel is a relic of the 80s with dusty rose wallpaper, brass accents, glass elevators, and the like. As other reviewers have noted, in serious need of an overhaul. Room was a generous size and clean in as much as possible with wall to wall carpeting, yet there was peeling wallpaper and paint in areas, and a general sense of malaise. We chose it for the lakeside view, which was lovely, EXCEPT for the pumping music the the hotel plays in the evening and reverberates across the lake and property. Made it difficult to enjoy the balcony. Tons of families with small children and business conventions/people with nametags. Pool under repair when we were there, with people drilling in it until 8 pm Saturday (our room was directly above it). Staff on the other hand were very friendly and helpful.

Room tip: Ask for a lake side room on the left side of the building when facing the lake. This will put you as far away as possible from the pumping music.

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights and was totally surprised how nice it is! It is situated beside a gorgeous lake, we were very fortunate to have been given a lake view and sitting in our veranda, we felt like we were in a cruise ship sailing along this serene lake! The room itself is well appointed, nice and big with modern amenities, bed is comfortable and room is clean. Breakfast was superb with lots of choices..we were hosted by KTO (Korea Tourism Organization) and was really impressed that in a middle of a small town, one would find a hotel with this calibre. In the evening they would have a live band playing some american music in their lounge/bar, great for just hanging out and unwinding. I would highly recommend this property to any one travelling in the area.

Room tip: Ask for a higher floor with lake view room, definitely worth it!
