“Exceptional Service”

We stayed for 2 nights at Polaris Pension. Mr Noh and his family made our stay very memorable.Mr Noh picked us up from the train station and to my surprise, he was already at the train station waiting for us when our train arrived at Gyeongju. The house that we are assigned is very spacious and more importantly well maintained considering that the Pension is only managed by Mr Noh and his wife. The view outside the house is very scenic ( facing the padi field) and our children enjoyed playing in the garden. Mr Noh took the trouble to show us how to get around the town by bus and also provided valuable information on how we should maximize our time to explore as much of Gyeongju. We will definitely stay at Polaris Pension when we visit Gyeongju again.

Customer service at Pension Polaris was exceptional! Our host, Mr. Noh, spoke some Englsih, which was really helpful. He offered to pick us up at the Visitors' Information Center when we arrived at Gyeongju, gave us a quick tour in his car, showed us how to get around town by bus, and even took us to the supermarket.

The somewhat hidden pension was not easy to locate as every house looked quite the same and our Korean was limited. The nearest bus stop was 5 minutes away only, though we definately will not be able to find it if Mr. Noh didn't show us first! Getting around by bus was not complicated as there were three buses No. 10, 11, 700, to major attractions.

Polaris had three two-storey houses, all painted in bright colours. Mr. Noh and his family's house was right next to the pension. We stayed at the top floor of the blue house. Our room was pretty in pink, clean and tidy. Our balcony overlooked the front yard and neighbour's wheat fields. The front yard had a cute swing set and mini-golf area, as well as a mini pool for summer poolside BBQs. We had two small bottles of distilled water for our two day stay. The kitchen included a stove, a kettle, utensils, a sink. The shower was hot and good, but the toilet flushed slow and we had to get a pump for it. Towels, bath products, and slippers were provided, although we usually like to bring our own. Remember to bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste because Korean hotels/hostels do not provide these. We also had a problem with the electric outlet because our adaptor wouldn't fit (your plug must be round). The adaptor we needed was not in store so Mr. Noh lent us his electric converter... worked for our cell phones but didn't quite work on our camera batteries...

Polaris can also provides services like celebrative banners, balloons and cakes~

Very helpful owner with reasonable English makes this pension worthwhile. Picked me up from airport, drove me to my meeting, to the beginning of my little trek in Gyeongju National Park, even took me to a local restaurant to explain the menu. Room very colourful, with a kitchenette, clean, comfy bed.

I rated this property as 'very good' because it's hard to get a really excellent accomodation in Gyeongju for a reasonable price. The pension is located in a number of cheerful colorful little wooden houses on a property of the owner who lives in another cheerful looking wooden house (looks like somewhere in the Alps :-)). The room (deluxe) was smaller than it seemed on the photographed, but it was ok. It had a kitchenette, a sink, and a tiny veranda. All seemed reasonably clean, but perhaps not spotless (the amount of little pillows, plush animals, and other objects makes it hard to give a perfect judgement). The bed contained two small dead insects, but I guess that's what you get in a countryside house where windows can open (unlike a large hotel). All in all, the room was pleasant.
The bathroom was very small and rather basic, with a simple shower and no separate shower basin/bath, which means water going all over the tiny space. Water pressure was good, and there was hot water all the time.
Location: a little far from the centre. There are three buses passing near the pension (3 min. walk uphill), and it takes ca. 25 minutes from town or a bit longer, depending on the traffic. The buses don't take a straight road, but pass by several other hotels and districts on the way, so it takes a while. Only once we took at taxi, but it was not a good idea: the driver gave us a sightseeing ride of Gyeongju and we paid 20.000 won for the pleasure, far too much.
The location, on the other hand, is very good for the Bulguksa temple, which is 5 min. away.
It has to be said that the sights of Gyeongju are rather spread out and that there are no really very appealing hotels in the centre (which, in spite of bad reviews in Lonely Planet etc. is not too bad - they are renovating it now, with some new pedestrian area being created. And it has all the usual cafe chains, restaurants, etc.).
The breakfast (included) is rather poor, but there are no other options around. This is a residential area with very spread out little houses and that's all. For breakfast we got some pieces of white toast bread, jam (in little plastic containers: not really good), small butter containers, very artificially tasting juice, and instant coffee or green tea bags. There was also some fruits, depending on the day. Once we got peach, once grapes (both good). And hard boiled eggs. Not much for vegetarians, I am afraid. Or for connesseurs.
There is no fixed breakfast time, at least not when we were there. And no fixed breakfast area. Sometimes we ate on the veranda of the main house, with the owner and other guests. Other time on our own veranda, alone.
It has to be said that not much is fixed in general. :-) The owner is a very nice fellow, who in a way really tries to make your stay nice: he gave us maps of the area, told us what to see, which buses go where, etc. And he even brought us by his car, together with two other guests, for a half-day trip to a nearby hanok village, which was very nice.
On the other hand, he seems a bit chaotic. When we arrived (by train and bus that he suggested, including the hour), nobody was at the pension and after 10 minutes waiting we simply had to call him from our mobile phone.
Then, one night there was a group of young people staying, and they were very noisy at night, but nobody told them to be quiet (it was after midnight). The rooms are not very well isolated so that's what you get when your neighbour is not respecting the night sleep. I think that in such a small pension it is the responsibility of the owner to maintain peace.
Also, as I said, there were no fixed breakfast times. Once it was said to be at 7.30. Then, next day, at 7.30 everybody was still soundly asleep. :-)
So, ok, if you are relaxed yourself and don't have a tight schedule to follow. And it probably partly depends on your personal preferences. On the other hand, it was very difficult to find really a perfect clean accomodation in Gyeongju. The infrastructure there, in spite of its famie (but perhaps just within Korea), is not very well developed and it shows.
