“3 nights at Gyeongju Hilton”
Reviewed May 30, 2013

I was there for a four days conference. Located very close to an amusement park and a lake with many Korean resturants around, I think the location was ok. However, it was about 30 minutes away from down town and part of the lake close to the hotel was dry and bushy. The hotel and room interior was luxirious but a little less than other Hilton hotels I have stayed. On cleaniness, they got it all right. The bathroom was very clean. The bath tub was big enough for a 6 feet tall guy and looked very new. The breakfast was delicious but the menu was the same for the three mornings I was there. There was strong wireless internet network anywhere within the hotel. Generally, it was an enjoyable stay.

- Newly renovated rooms are clean and adequate to the qualities we expect from Hilton hotels.

- You can walk to Starbucks for morning coffee and I'm sure that you'll be delighted. Localized with Korean style.

- They charge for indoor swimming pool. What a shame!

Thank you for staying at the Hilton Gyeongju

It is our sincere goal to ensure that our guests receive the highest standard of hospitality and service. We are constantly looking for ways in which we can improve this.

There is no fixed Hilton policy for the use of pool. Complimentary use of the pool will be subject to the each hotel's policy. For oue hotel, we set the very competitive room rate excluding additional facilities charges as our competitors are doing in this area. So guests who want to use the pool should pay to extra charges. But Hilton Hhonors Gold member or above could use the pool free of charge.

We once agagin thank you for bringing the above points to our attention. And we look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you to the Hilton Gyeongju.

Sincerly,

I'm a gold member and I booked a lakeside view room with points at hhonors.com. Arrived around 6pm and the frontdesk clerk informed me my room was upgraded to the lakeside view which I already booked for. Too tired from driving so didn't bother to complain at the time. Not getting an upgrade is fine with a proper explanation since they are not required to upgrade me, but hearing that my room was upgraded to the room that I booked for was quite disappoointing experience.

We stayed here for three nights during the time of the Cherry blossom, its the best place to stay as the Lake is the main area to see the cherry blossom. The hotel is a bit dated, the rooms are comfortable, large and clean but the pool area was concrete and needs renovating.

Was disappointed that the concierge couldnt recommmend an English tour guide but it didnt matter too much, we took the Korean bus tour, an ipad and guide book! Disappointed that they charge to use the indoor swimming pool, bit of a surprise for a Hilton to charge to use their own facilities!

The staff at the hotel were great, v friendly and helpful, and it was always nice to come back to the hotel after a long day of exploring.

Overall, its a good base to stay whilst visiting the area, the number of international standard hotels are limited, the only other one I may have stayed in other than the Hilton would have been the Hyundai.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a lake view

The Gyeongju Hilton is just fine as an Hotel. The room we had which was billed as King Superior was not large by any means but had a balcony view and a large comfortable bed. All good for a room rate of about $150. The staff were excellent, service good, English spoken at the desk and usual Korean super politeness.Room service food quite OK without being exceptional.
My only issue with the Hotel was with the "extra" charges of $10 per head for using the pool and $12 in the lobby coffee shop for a coffee…perhaps they are the going rate and I am out of touch, but that seemed fairly heavy to me….looked at the menu outside the Italian Restaurant and saw steak for $63 and opted for the Korean BBQ down the road 5 minutes. Directions from the desk.

Getting there from Seoul is dead easy. KTX (Korean TGV) from Seoul Station to Singyeongju Station (New Gyeongju) which is a special purpose TGV type station just out of town. For anyone who has used the TGV from Gare Du Nord to Avignon the experience is a straight copy… the DTX section of Seoul Stn is just like GDN and the Singyeongju DTX station could have been copied from Avignon TGV. The train was plated Alstom Paris…??? not hard to see where the ideas have come from. Train cost $44 reserved seat one way….300KPH…love fast trains…awesome. Two hours and seven minutes Seoul to Singyeongju.

To get to the Hilton The 700 bus runs about every 40 minutes from the station outside the front door and takes 45-50 minutes going through Gyeongju..cost regardless of where you get off is 1500kwn or $1.50…We used our Seoul subway prepaid cards on the bus...be sure to press the red stop button overhead when you spot the Hilton on the right of the road….the bus crosses the intersection and drops at the kerb.
Return to Station is just the same…a bus stop shelter about 200M out of the hotel across the main road and slightly left,….timetable available from the concierge. There are three survivable fast food restaurants at the station but no free wifi until you get back on the train.

In summary an English free but trouble free easy transfer both ways…..taxi alternative about $35 but how boring is that..?

Room Tip: Balcony on lakeside

The Hilton Gyeongju is elegant but at a decent price. The rooms are very spacious and my wife and I enjoyed our stay. There are several restaurants in the hotel and we ate at their Italian restaurant. The food was fine. The hotel was not very busy when we stayed there in April, 2013. We would stay there again if we ever travel back to Gyeonju.
