“Comfortable stay, courteous staff”
Reviewed March 14, 2011

I was very satisfied with my stay at this hotel. Front desk staff was helpful and efficient. The room was well appointed and quite spacious. The breakfast buffet was very good. I was traveling for business so was not so concerned with price, but the room and breakfast rates seemed reasonable to me. This was my first trip to Korea. The neighborhood was odd, in general I felt safe and comfortable but there are several adult entertainment businesses in the area as well as Korean "bars" and "nightclubs" (places that provide company with drinks). It is easy to ignore these places as the hotel has a coffee shop, 2 restaurants and their own bar.

I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights.
We were told by our hosts that this was the best hotel in the city of Daejeon. It was certainly good. Apart from the last day when we had to leave very early, I had the buffet breakfast every morning. This was very good, with plenty of choice. Both hot and cold food. Asian and American/European.
The room was very comfortable with a bath/shower.
Certainly would return to this hotel. The only spoiler was noise outside the room in the corridor at about 0200-0300, caused by other residents returning to their rooms. They were not talking - they were shouting. I don't know their nationality but certainly they were not Europeans or English speaking.
The business centre was excellent. I was able to check my emails. It seemed to be open all hours of the day.
There were good restaurants in the area - we went to three different, including one on the last night without our Korean hosts. The restaurant staff looked after us very well even though we had no common language. The swellfish was very enjoyable!

First of all, if you are going to South Korea, be aware that there is a Hotel Riviera in Seoul, and one in Daejeon. Don't make the same mistake I did, and book the Seoul location through using hotels.com. This is surprisingly easy to do, by the way.

Some reviewers on this site have said this is the nicest hotel in Daejeon. From personal experience staying in a number of hotels (because of my initial booking error, compounded by a high conference demand for rooms that week), the Hotel Riviera is not as nice as the Hotel Spapia, basically due to age. The Spapia beds are really pretty good. Stay at the Spapia and don't worry, you won't be missing anything.

Also, if you are in a jam, the "ondal" rooms are actually okay. They are the Korean-style rooms that feature futons and rice paper screens over the windows. Very simple, but the room was clean, although the last time it had been remodeled was probably during the 70's. I had the choice between an "ondal" room at the Riviera and a regular room at the Hotel Hongin just down the street. The ondal at the Riviera was my educated choice.

My husband and I stayed in a traditional 'Ondol' room in the Riviera hotel which however had normal twin beds in it. Even though we booked 4 months before our trip we couldn't get a western style room because the hotel was very busy in early October. The room was very large and featured an entrance hall which led to the bathroom and the main room. There was no desk, as it was an Ondol with a low table for kneeling by, which is a disadvantage if you're on a business trip and are used to western style rooms. The bathroom had modern amenities but not much space to put down toiletries. Furniture overall as well as the carpets had spots and bruises and the room clearly would need a make over. A big drawback was the air conditioning and heating as we weren't able to turn down the heat a lot, especially the floor heating. Breakfast was a buffet with a good choice of items. If you came past 9 a.m. the buffet was already scavenged quite a bit and wouldn't be resupplied. Talking to colleagues, it became clear that the Riviera probably is the place to stay in Daejeon if you are looking for a decent type of hotel. Therefore, despite its drawbacks, you would want to stay in the Riviera after all as in other hotels you'd be much more disappointed.

Last two reviewers are right-outdated about sums it up. Has that late 1970s feel to it. Not exactly dirty, but dimly lit hallways and rooms left me with a mediocre impression. The Lobby is bright, but not much worth looking at. Large rooms, but only one window meant they were dark. You must pay for shampoo.

Nice fitness room, which is free. Unfortunately they filled in what once would have been a nice pool (in the 70s or 80s).

The sauna is half price (about 7,000 won). Should be free in my book, as I am a paying guest. Sauna doesn't provide shampoo or conditioner-only bars of soap and shaving cream. Odd, to say the least.

The city has few (no?) newer hotels to choose from, so if you can book this hotel for under 100,000 a night, then you may be satisfied.

I would like to confirm the comments from other reviewers. Indeed, the rooms feel to be outdated and not really clean anymore, although the rooms are really large and giving some facelift, the hotel may be a good choice in Daejon. There is a spa in the hotel, and we really liked it. As well, some of really nice korean restaurants are nearby, so the dinner options are reasonable. Tried the buffet breakfast at the hotel, and it was great! Good choice of western/asian food. Considering rather moderate prices for the room, not a bad choice for an overnight stay!

Travellers should beware that there doesn't seem to be any descent hotels in Daejeon, South Korea. I was recommended this hotel twice as one of the better in town. The lobby is very presentable, but the rooms are quite old and not that clean. There is a nice breakfast buffet on the lower level - which costs extra (~$15-$20 per person). Also, the hotel is in the spa are of town, which is about 20-30 min drive away from the KTX station - give yourself time to get to the station.
