The wife and I decided to get out of Seoul for the weekend and check out Daegu. We wanted to see Seomun Market and just in general chill out for the weekend and have a few drinks. My wife booked at Hotel Taegu because we were looking for an affordable hotel, no frills hotel, and that is exactly what we got.
There is really nothing wrong with Hotel Taegu, but at the same time there isn't much value. We paid 50k WON per night for two nights, and honestly, as the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for."
Hotel Taegu isn't a love motel, it's an average, sterile business hotel. It's the vanilla of hotels, which is fine, if that's what you look for. Personally, we have stayed at hotels for cheaper that have more character, which we find charming. Hotel Taegu has none of these.
Service: My beef with the service was that a couple of times we couldn't figure out how to control the temperature in the room. I know that there can be a language barrier, but I do have a translation book and used it at the front desk for a maintenance person to come up to the room to check out the furnace (the temperature is oddly enough controlled by the phone). The man never showed up. We figured it out, but it was annoying, especially since it was particularly frigid that weekend. The front desk wasn't rude, but they weren't exactly helpful. We went down and asked if they knew where a certain location in the city was. My Korean is not perfect, but I can pronounce Hangul characters efficiently. They didn't know, of course. However, thankfully, the taxi driver had a good idea and dropped us off right near the vicinity of the restaurant we wanted to visit.
Value: There isn't much value to be found here. No charms. Very sterile and soulless.
Sleep quality and Cleanliness: We slept in a double bed, which was satisfactory and the room was cleaned daily. No complaints.
Location: Hotel Taegu is located by Duryu station, outside exit 10. Correction, it's quite a walk outside exit 10. Maybe because it was cold, but it felt like a long walk up a hill to get the hotel. It was a good 5 - 10 minute walk from the station to the hotel. There isn't much around the hotel in terms of western food if that is what you are looking for. However, there seemed to be quite a selection of Korean BBQ joints nearby and a Japanese restaurant across the street. The best Western restaurants are actually in the hotel. There was a Mr. Pizza at the subway station though if you feel like Italian. Next time we visit Daegu, we are going to choose a hotel closer to the action near Kyungpook University station or Seomun Market.
Restaurants: The brewery and the steakhouse were pretty good. We had New York strip at the steakhouse on Sunday night. It was dead inside though. There were only 2 more couples in the restaurant besides my wife and I. However, we did get a chance to sit near a window and look out onto the city. My steak was 35K and came with an appetizer, salad and soup. My wife got the Fois gras topped steak for 40k and it came with the same sides. Great steaks! Well cooked and really juicy. I would probably go back to the restaurant, but stay somewhere else.
Overall: Nothing too great, but nothing Earth shattering either. A standard, quiet, sterile and clean hotel with no gimmicks, but at the same time not charm. This might be perfect for some people, but for my wife and myself, who like a little character and charm at the places we stay.... it wasn't for us. The service could use an upgrade. I hate calling down to the front desk and being ignored, especially when I'm doing my best to speak Korean.

A shabby hotel. English speaking staff, quite helpful. Dark lit room, creepy.

We stayed in Hotel Taegu (Daegu) during the 2011 World Athletics Championships. The hotel was under a lot of pressure from the organisers of the event to provide extra rooms at short notice, but Mr. Cho, the manager, was really good with us overseas visitors who had booked a long time in advance to attend the event. The hotel is very smart and has a steak restaurant where breakfast is served, a basement beer-hall-style restaurant, and a branch of Angel-in-us coffee shop by the reception. The staff were always helpful and friendly; although they don't all speak English they will always get someone on the telephone who does. Mr. Cho seemed to be never far away to help too. The hotel is 5 minutes walk from Duryu metro station, which is on the west side of the city and four stops from the central interchange. Rooms are air-conditioned and a decent size.

We had a great stay at Taegu Hotel. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The buffet breakfast provided a large choice of items - both Korean & Western. The staff were fantastic. They looked after us really well and made our stay in daegu a real pleasure.
