“Emotional visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2013

This place is a must visit if you're in Jeju. We had a driver during our stay and he suggested visiting this museum. So glad we did! Start off with a short video of how the Japanese occupied Japan and then finish the tour with a walkthru of the underground tunnels that were built during the war. We met the founder (whose father was one of the Koreans involved in building the tunnel) who happened to be there and had a brief chat with him. It was an emotional experience. The museum seemed a little out of the way but it is definitely worth it.

“Painful memories, relevant today”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2013

The Jeju Uprising/Massacre (or simply 4.3), with up to 80,000 villagers killed by the military, took place just prior to the Korean War but is relevant today as South Korea re-militarizes the Island of Peace. Go to the museum, then witness the current hot protests against a naval base being constructed in the fishing/farming village of Gangjeong (between Seogwipo and Jungmun), along the Ollie Trail.

Learn about Jeju's past of war and peace. Jeju is an incredible place and they have done a good job at keeping the history alive and known. Definitely worth a visit.

“Must-See Place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2012

Jeju Museum of War History and Peace is a must-see place, if you visit Jeju. Most tourists just hang out at the beaches, restaurants, golf courses, etc or walk on the Olle. Walking on the Olle is nice--a great pilgrimage for healing. If you really want to know about the unique history of Jeju and the Korean Peninsula, however, you must visit this museum. Although it's hard to get there by public transportation, it's worth visiting. The museum shows how Jeju Islanders were persecuted by Japanese colonialists, and then by Korean and U.S. soldiers after Korea's independence. The museum's free-guided tour takes the visitors to the harsh realities of islanders' historical suffering and the division of political ideologies between two Koreas. The highlight of this museum is its peace garden. This huge garden made me pray for peace in the Korean peninsula.
