So there is no address in the guide book. Just a phone number and the words "behind the Lotte hotel" but Busan people are so hospitable that a shop owner walked me the three blocks there and it was so worth it. They even booked my transport to Japan!
Thank you Jen!

I stayed for only a night but I was quite impressed with the hostel. I remembered arriving at the hostel and there was this woman coming down the stairs telling me it was a lovely place and she was right! The dorm room I stayed was clean and well-maintained with an ensuite bathroom. The pantry was on the roof which I thought was quite cool and I like the common area which was spacious and had a nice ambience. Jin and her family who ran the hostel were nice too making it a pleasant stay. I would have stayed longer if my schedule permitted me too! I would highly recommend this place to anyone who comes to Busan be it a backpacker or not!

As I approached 8 months in Korea in May, it was time to begin looking for a possible university position for the fall. South Korea’s 3 big institutions are known as “SKY”, for Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei. Using the ever-popular Dave’s ESL Café website, I have already managed to apply for a teaching position at Seoul National. I also plan to visit the Yonsei campus soon to see Natalia, who has just secured an ELS position there for the next year.

One of the other options is to move to a town like Busan (pronounced ‘Pusan’), a major Asian port city in southeastern Korea. Busan is the second largest city in South Korea and is home to quite a few colleges and universities, like Busan National, to which I have also applied. To get an idea of what life might be like along the water, I took the KTX to Busan and checked into Blue Backpackers, a Hostel I found recommended on the web. The staff was friendly and my room was big, clean, and comfortable. The free breakfast in the morning is my favorite part of Hostel lodging, a nice way to meet other guests from all around the world. I would recommend staying here for the price and proximity to a nice shopping area and other attractions.

Despite the similar dense population of the area, I found Busan to be a much different atmosphere than the capital city of Seoul. The climate and feel were very different right at the moment I stepped out of the train station. With the annual cherry blossoms in bloom, I found the city to be the perfect blend of new and old. I immediately liked it better than both Seoul and my hometown of Daejeon.

Hungry for something fresh and different, I sought out the local specialty, dwaeji gukbap (돼지국밥), literally ‘pork soup rice’. This simple yet hearty dish was adapted from recipes in many regions and gained popularity during the Korean War, as Busan became the largest refugee destination on the peninsula.

Always on the lookout for new English-language books, I found a terrific used book store/coffee shop, Fully Booked, in a great part of town near the Kyungsung/Pukyung subway stop. The owner, an expat from Chicago, has been in Korea for over 11 years and offered a few fresh tips on university teaching in Busan. After a visit to the P.N.U. campus, I was not sold on the school, but I would definitely like to teach and live in Busan. It has a much more relaxed and open feel … In short, I hope to visit Busan again this summer and would love to live there if the opportunity arises. The city displays a completely different side to a fascinating and diverse country that has me under its charms.

Room Tip: If you are not pick and on a budget, the dormitory (multi-bed) option is a cheap sleep. It is a grea...

The room was clean and decent and a great backpacker-type accommodation. Cost was 50,000 (Korean won) for a room for two people. Also in a good location, a few minutes away from the subway. We only stayed one night but I think it is a good place for budget travelers.

Located in Seomyeon, the hostel is about 8 minutes walk to the subway station. We booked a double room. The room was clean but after opening our luggage, there was no space to walk.

Facilities are basic and looked a bit dated, but there was a bathtub there. The walls were rather thin though. Overall, this place is convenient, safe and clean.

Therefore, for the price, this place is value for money.

I stayed at Blue Backpackers for three nights. The hostel is close to the Lotte shopping center, and the subway stations, just 6 mins walk, the location is very good. The hostel provide a simple breakfast, and you can cook in a common kitchen, that what I want. The rooms are okay, but the hostel will not provide cleaning service everyday, better do it by yourself. If you want to access Internet every time, you should stay in the first floor, the third floor can hardly receive WI-FI signal.

Room Tip: Some rooms are close to the railway, very noisy at night.
