“Hidden costs, so-so service, but clean & comfy”
Reviewed July 17, 2011

My husband and I spent 2 nights at the Hilton Garden Inn near Albany Medical Center: 7/15 and 7/16, 2011. We were in town for a concert. Check-in (second floor) was fast & hassle-free (booked online ), although I was slightly dismayed to learn that there was a $10 per day parking fee.

We were in Room 505.It was a reasonably "roomy" room, with 2 double beds, mini fridge, microwave, 4-cup coffee maker (with real creamers, not the powdered stuff!), a 3-drawer dresser, desk w/ office chair, flat-screen TV, armchair w/ foot rest, 2 nightstands, 2 phones, radio alarm clock, various lamps, iron w/ full-sized ironing board & a closet w/ mirrored sliding doors. The decor was in autumn-y colors. Carpet, furnishings and bathroom were clean. Tasteful framed photographs of Capitol Region landmarks adorned the walls.

The bathroom was small, but adequate... other than the stinginess of bath towels... only 2?!? (This is becoming a recurring pet peeve in my travel reviews.) I personally need 2 towels; one for my long hair and another for my body, which leaves the hubby with nothing. A call to housekeeping delivered 2 more towels, as well as extra, smaller towels that we didn't ask for, in less than ten minutes. Housekeeping services tidying our room the second day of our stay were wonderful.

Beds were comfortable, with adjustable firmness. Plenty of plump pillows.

Some minor issues... There was no phone book and no customary Bible in the room. The channel guide provided did not match up to the actual channels on the TV. The vending machine on our floor was defective, not accepting any of our dollar bills. When I brought this to the attention of the on-duty desk clerk, he looked dazed and confused, remarking: "Really?!?"

The Hilton Garden Inn's amenities include a small fitness center: 2 treadmills, exercise bike, an elliptical machine, an I-don't know-what-you-call it for upper-body lifts, free weights and a weight-lifting bench. The fitness center and adjacent pool are open from 5AM-10PM.

For your dining options, there's decent little sports bar/ restaurant, The Recovery Room, with a pleasant atmosphere, average service and a variety of decent, affordable food (healthy options too, not just fattening pub fare). The American Grill offers a breakfast buffet starting at 7AM. Cost is $10.95 for adults, $5.95 for children, and is served starting at 5AM on the second floor. There are no a la carte options, although they DO cook eggs to order. I personally could never eat $10.95 worth of food that early in the morning, so we just got coffee (watered down and unremarkable), for which we were not charged. If you are a big eater, you probably would get more than your money's worth. I believe I spotted steak amid the offerings of full-sized pastries and other sinful options. There is also a Starbucks by the first floor entrance. (And a Key Bank right across from it, so you can retrieve the cash to pay for your Iced Cinnamon Dolce Latte.)

There's a 24-hour business center if you didn't bring your own computer. Otherwise, there is free wi-fi in the rooms. Also, a 24-hour "pantry" (convenience store) is right next to the registration desk. Pantry, business Center and restaurants are all on the second floor.

Checking out took longer than checking in, because the credit card they swiped for incidentals "didn't go through" the first time. We had a $20 charge for two days' parking, plus the cost of a bottled water and 2 Cokes. (Please note, pantry beverages are all a quarter more than in the vending machines.)

I probably would stay at this particular hotel again only in a pinch. Comfortable and affordable, yes. But too many hidden extra costs that would probably be freebies at other establishments.

We stayed in the King One Bedroom suite. The bedroom was the keyed room and adjacent to it was a corner room with a sofa bed and table with chairs. Both rooms had refrigerators and microwaves. The hotel was very clean and the room very nice. The two rooms gave us the additional room that is nice when travelling with a family. The reception area of the hotel is on the second floor and you need a card key to access the floors with rooms. There is self parking which you pay $10 additional per night. It was full when we arrived but we found an unmarked space that they said was okay for us to leave the car with our hotel parking permit. Adjacent to the hotel is a very nice Starbucks (great staff) and down the street a Panera. We didn't take advantage of the onsite bar/restaurant, the pool or the fitness area. We had a little difficulty finding the entrance because there is a door facing the main road that is not how you enter the hotel. The entrance is on the side facing the Albany Law School. There was a loud teen party in the lounge when we arrived but it was well contained. There were not sufficient towels in the room but they were brought up shortly after asking.

My mother and I booked this hotel last minute on Priceline when I found out my sister got into a car accident and was in Albany Medical Center. We chose this location because it is connected to Albany Medical Center by a walkway. The hotel was immaculate, everything was brand new and super clean. The beds were very comfortable and I enjoyed putting the bed on a different sleep number setting. I absolutely LOVED the complimentary Neutrogena toiletries provided in the bathroom. There was a Starbucks onsite and Key Bank, and also within walking distance lots of other things and almost right next door is a Panera Bread and CVS which was extremely convenient. The staff at the front desk were extremely welcoming and understanding being that we weren't really sure when we were going to leave because we did not know how long my sister was going to be in the hospital. We ended up having to extend our originally booked 3 night stay another night which was no problem. The girl at the front desk was super friendly, and even remembered what room we stayed in. She recommended numerous restaurants for us to try and gave us directions to places since we were not familiar with the area.I read some reviews saying that there was a $10 a night parking fee, but we were not charged this. I can not wait to stay at another Hilton!

We have stayed at this hotel several times and are pleased with the grounds, lobby, room and location. A minor inconvenience the last time, they couldn't find a luggage cart for us although the facility didn't look that busy. Otherwise, this is a great hotel.

Clean and convenient, but the rooms were a little loud and hard to control temperature.

Went for a weekend with another family (4 kids 4 and under). Rooms VERY small. Pool also small but that was no big deal. The problem was the pool was freezing! We asked several times for them to raise the heat but it was cold all weekend. Like, so cold we couldnt get in. The breakfast was great and the sports bar was fun.

Arrived at the hotel after an excursion around the medical center. There is no vehicular entrance on New Scotland Avenue and you have to get to the front of the hotel around the corner, but there is construction present and the actual parking lot entrance is poorly marked. The parking lot itself was full on a Friday night, so after driving around it a few times, I noticed a nearby parking garage entrance. The parking garage is $5.75/night versus the $10/night that the Hilton charges. Since the garage was nearly empty, I wondered why anyone was parked at the Hilton.

Check-in was straight forward and I received a comfortable room with a refrigerator and two double beds. The bed was the most comfortable I've been in while traveling. Superb, in fact, and would have been better had not the cycling HVAC unit been so noisy. Heat on and blowing, then click, and off it goes, turning on again a little while later. The motor in this unit, under the window, wasn't quiet so each time it would pop on, I'd wake up.

The convenience to Albany Medical Center is impressive, and if that's your destination, you can't get any closer.
