On a recent hectic ‘weeknight-no-time-to-cook’ search for a decent
place to eat without dropping big bucks; I was referred to a place familiar to locals.
Decor? hmmm ..how would I describe rather dark walls painted maroon
with blue tablecloth centerpiece. Not a romantic rendevous by any shot.
Walls were hung with homemade paintings that would qualify for entry
into the infamous ‘Museum of Bad Art’ in Dedham Massaschusetts.(no kidding, it really exists). The rug was speckled-beige-brown and hid the grime well. We were promptly seated, near the storefront where a sad looking ‘poinsettia’ leftover from Christmas sat. It was generally nosiey. . We opted for a glass of house merlot. Decent. Looking around the room we noticed blackboard specials. . House specials included: a strip steak for $14.95, cajun shrimp for 12.95, grilled swordfish for $13. There were many sandwich choices ranging from ruebens, to cornbeef, to roast beef, grilled chicken, and many more too numerous to mention; definitely a good place for lunch. I sampled their basic hamburger, with a choice of 2 toppings(roasted pepper, sauteed
onions)$5.75. My wife chose the caesar salad with grilled chicken.$6.75.
My hamburger was juicy, cooked medium, it came with side order of
fries, a pickle, two slices of the tasteless-type tomatoes. My wife’s caesar salad lacked any punch, missing the usual tangy garlicky-anchovy vinagrette.
All in all, it was OK. Total bill:
$37 with tip plus $5 for parking. This place probaly enjoys the
proximity of being opposite the ‘Repertory theatre’ and close to the Palace theatre.
I would imagine on weekends it competes well with the brewhouse next
door, and draws a younger drinking crowd. Decent value for the money, but nothing to rave about. JT.
