“By far the worst dining experience since long”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2012 via mobile

An absolute charming retro restaurant which kept the atmosphere of some time ago. We were the first guests for dinner and were not in a hurry, so the chef and his staff could have put a nice effort and their pride in preparing our meal. The starters were not creating any issue issue, oysters and lobster bisque. The soup was not bad, but somewhat too watery. Then the main courses, lobster tail with risotto and some vegetables and a NY strip steak with mashed potato and vegetables. The hottest part of the first dish was the lemon and the steak was warm, not very warm. The mashed potato was at best lukewarm and the vegetables were as cold as the plates the dishes were served on. The lobster was well (pre-?)cooked while the sauce was also cold. The steak was well prepared (medium) but the cut was so-so; a strip steak should not contain any nerves and the fat should only be at one side of the meat and not also at the heart of the piece. The eadible part of the steak was like 60% and this should be 20-25% more. The waiter offered to have our dishes heated without harming the lobster or steak. Our plates went for 10 minutes to the kitchen and then we got them back. The meat leavings were regrouped next to the steak on the plate and now everything was lukewarm. My wife's plate did not get to this level. Since we deteste arrogance and careless behaviors of chefs we paid our bill and left. The fact that as well the chef and the restaurant manager did not attempt to show up and tried to understand the problem but that it was left to our waiter to 'handle' us did not help. For those who are not familiar with my reviews: we dine out at least once a week all over the world in all kinds of places eating all kinds of simple and top-end meals. Most of our reviews are positive. My advise: don't go to this place, management does not take you serious as a guest and customer and the outcome of your evening out is foodwise unpredictable.

“What was all the fuss about McGuire's?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 7, 2012 via mobile

Over the last several years, people had always commented that one of the best restaurants in Albany was McGuire's on Stste Street. Great food, great steaks and bring plenty of money. Well, it was a disappointment. There was one steak selection (filet) on the menu, but one special strip steak for that day. Don't get me wrong, the filet was good, but I wanted more! The staff was attentive and unobtrusive. The wine list was limited and moderately priced. From the oysters on the half shell to the Key Lime pie, the food was good. I was just expecting more. I was expecting an expensive meal, but it was not anything close to the high end bill I anticipated. With cocktails, appetizers, a bottle of Pinot Grigio and desserts for two, we got by for less than $120 plus tip. In all it was not what I had been told!

“Delightful little place”

By far the second best place I have ever eaten Filet Mignon. Very attentive staff. Would def. recommend it and would eat there again when we're at the Morgan State House.

“A mixed bag at McGuire's”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2012

This restaurant definiely has a charm to it. Fairly small , the first room is taken up almost entirely by a beautiful old bar area on one side and booths for dining on te other side. There is also a back room which has a few tables and is open to the kitchen area. The latter is the place to be if you prefer a bit more quiet, the bar room is definitely more of a happening place. The service was very good. We had a waiter and a waiter in training, and both did their best to provide excellent service. Their wine list is nice, and their menu offers a smallish but well rounded selection of entrees and appetizers. The food was very good, but our problem was that for the cost of our food, the portion sizes were not reflective of the cost. My husband had a lobster tail with risotto, which was over $30, and when it arrived it was literally a scoop of rice with what looked like it could have been a prawn or colosal shrimp on the side. Our other entree was similar.....tasted good but gone in a few minutes, and all that was left was a hefty bill.

“Delicious Pints”

Draft beer is plentiful and the service is excellent. Locals crowd this pub that is full of history and very cozy.
