My wife and I were driving around Albany looking for affordable Italian with atmosphere. We were staying at the Crowne Plaza where someone had recommended a restaurant about a block away, but when we pulled up and could see they had valet parking and a dress code, we knew it wasnt what we had in mind. After driving around for about 1/2 hour, we saw the Paradiso, and said, that looks like our kinda place. The neigherbood had seen better days, but it was worth a shot. From the minute we walked in, we said jackpot ! The Food was Excellent, especially the Soups. The Pasta was Al Dente and the Marinara Sauce outstanding,etc,etc... The restaurant orginally opened back in the 1920s and has a storied past. I think the current owner purchased it about 20 years ago. When you walk you are immediately taken back by the atmoshphere. The main dining has stained glass windows and frescos that make you feel your at the Sistine Chapel. After reading some of the displays on the walls, it turns out that the Movie "Iron Weed" was filmed here. The service was excellent, the food was excellent, and we liked it so much, we ate there two nights in a row. If you are looking for an excellent meal with atmoshphere, that wont break the bank, give it a try !
