Owner description: The New York State Capitol has served as the seat of government for New York since the 1880's. Over 125 years old, the building is a marvel of late 19th-century architectural grandeur. Built by hand of solid masonry, it took 5 architects and 32 years to complete. Then this is a must-see (tours available): Built over 50 years (or so) beginning in the 1850s, the Capitol encompasses a numer of architecture styles. Survived a fire in the 1910s that ruined a number of NY Colonial documents. Renovations completed ahead of schedule - skylights uncovered, and the million dollar staircase is truly amazing.

“Haunted Tour”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

Very interesting and informative for the history buff. The ghost stories although interesting were just a sidebar for the history lesson on this tour. A beautiful building and fun Halloween event. Sign up early for this free tour as they do fill up quickly. Regardless of whether you go on the "haunted tour" or just a regular tour it is well worth the time.

“Stunning Architecture”
Reviewed March 26, 2013

The outside of the building is breathtaking (especially considering the years in which it was constructed), so I don't know why I was so surprised to see the stunning architectural features inside the building. I didn't feel like I was inside a government building. It was as though I were transported to a medieval castle. The 40 foot ceilings with arches and chandeliers are definitely not what you find in modern buildings. The staircases (Grand West, Assembly and Senate) are all so beautiful and intricate, again, so hard to comprehend that you are in a government building. The assembly and senate chambers are classic with rich colors, 23 carat gold walls, carved stone, massive chandeliers, rich wood ceilings, plush carpets, and much more. I could go on about every feature of the building, but until you see and walk it yourself you can't imagine the beauty and detail in every corner. You can walk around by yourself and soak it all in or you can take the guided tour. The tour is an hour long, and only with a tour can you visit the chambers so that makes the tour essential. You can mill around by yourself afterwards to see all the exhibits. If you are in the area a visit to the capitol building is not to be missed. It's free, which makes it even nicer.

“Beautiful Albany landmark”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

Despite being a lifelong resident of Albany, I visited the Capitol for the first time only recently, when I went to support a friend who was lobbying for an important piece of legislation. It is absolutely magnificent inside. The history is interesting, the architecture is truly stunning and the building has kept much of its original feel. Beautiful woodwork, elaborate paint jobs on the walls, old fashioned-looking elevators (which only LOOK old-fashioned and work like new, thank goodness)... truly something special. If you have time, I would recommend going down to the Concourse and exploring the vast network of underground tunnels which connect you to other places such as the Empire State Plaza. If you are arriving for a specific event, especially on a lobby day, allow yourself PLENTY of time to find parking and get through security. Both of these processes take much longer than you would think.

“State Capitol, Albany NY”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

I am proud that Albany is the capitol of my state, NY. It is very interesting depending on the type of person you are lots of history. The architecture is very unique although i do wish there were more skyscrapers (Only one: Corning Tower right near the egg) But one thing that Upsets me is that not a lot of people Care about Albany, When people Say New york they almost always refer to NYC
