Owner description: Built before the American Revolution, the elegant home of General Philip Schuyler is one of the most outstanding examples of pre-war architecture. During the season, experience a guided-tour of the home from knowledgeable staff who will tell you the history of the home and the Schuyler family that lived there - Philip and Catharine Van Rensselaer Schuyler, and their eight children. Second daughter Elizabeth Schuyler married Alexander Hamilton in the museum's front parlor in 1780. Tours are offered on the hour. Please call in advance of your tour, as pre-scheduled groups and events will alter the tour schedule. Site is CLOSED yearly from October 31st until mid-May, excepting special events.

“Beautifully restored early American home”
Reviewed November 4, 2011

Tours during the fall are on the hour and you must take a tour to see the house. The house is sparsely furnished but the openness makes the structure itself more interesting. The front hall has a painted canvas floor. Rooms are well lit by large windows and the house must have had a magnificent view of the Hudson River before the city of Albany grew around it. I enjoyed this look at how early well-to-do settlers in this area lived.

“Breathing in the Past”
Reviewed September 11, 2011

You have to imagine this place before the city surrounded it, when it was out in the country with 80 acres and visas down to the Hudson. It has fine elegent but simple rooms, tells you how the early American upper class was attractive but not gaudy, still a contrast of simplicity against European splendor. See the room where Alexander Hamilton married Elizabeth Schuyler. The activities are especially nice at Christmas, when period costumes and music recreate the original atmosphere of warmth and congeniality. The guides will tell you that the cut in the banister is not due to the Indian tomahawk thrown during the raid to kidnap the Schuyler women, but don't let your children believe it!
