“Nice Surprise”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

We literally stumbled upon The Merry Monk in-between high school basketball games at the Times Union Center. There aren't a whole lot of choices in walking distance and we only chose this because there were actually living people sitting down eating at 5pm on a Saturday afternoon. Boy were we surprised at what a cool little place this is. Scored the table right by the wood stove and enjoyed our dinners with a nice craft beer. The place filled up quick and we realized quickly that we had stumbled upon a place we plan to go on purpose next time!

“be surprised”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

as we were waiting for a box office to open about 1/2 hour later, we decided to go across the street to an unassumming "pub". Didn't know what to expect, could have been hole in the wall bar that downtown neighborhoods are known for or......

going in we were a little concerned as to how empty the place was, but opted for a drink and tentatively reviewed the menu. The menu was varied and had healthy choices.....but why was the place empty?

Well the list of mussel offerings intrigued us and we choose the chipotle lime verison to try. We also order a side of "pomme frites" (snobbery for french fries).

WOW! the mussels were plentiful and eclectic in their presentation and taste, asked for additional crusty bread for soaking up the liquid - DON'T LET THAT GO TO WASTE!.

Suffice to say we stayed for 1 1/2 hrs and by that time, the theater crowd had comforatably filled the place. Since we have been back and tried various versions of their mussels - all as good as our first time. Crab cakes, standard restaurant fare. Burgers, nicely cooked and flavorful.....

A must try in downtown Albany (across for the Capital Rep)

“Cozy, good food & service, amazing beer selection”
Reviewed March 26, 2013

Stopped in before Cap Rep the other night for a quick bite. It was our first visit, but definitely not our last. The mussels, which I have since found out they are known for, were wonderful. My husband had a burger and raved about how good it was compared to our regular burger spots. The service was as satisfying as the food. The atmosphere and staff warm and welcoming. While we didn't indulge that evening, we both marveled over the beer choices and are looking forward to sampling a few on our next visit with some beer aficionados friends.

“Great place!”
Reviewed March 18, 2013 via mobile

This place is great! We went for dinner and although they are known for their muscles, I do not eat muscles but that was ok they have many other things on the menu! I ended up getting the bacon cheddar burger and it was outstanding!!!!! I would highly recommend this place and I would definitely go back for that burger again!

“Great service every time”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

Been back to the Merry Monk a few times now. Every time we go we always receive great attentive service. The food is cooked the way we ask each time and the beer choices are fantastic. I love having a go-to-place in downtown Albany that I can depend on.
