“A favorite local Italian restaurant”
Reviewed January 10, 2013

I love this little Italian restaurant. They have great $10 lunch specials and equally great dinner specials and the food is always excellent. It is a very small restaurant with only about 7 tables but they are always busy because they offer great food and terrific value for the money. I highly recommend this restaurant in downtown Albany near the Empire State Government Plaza. It is a family run operation with a lot of attention to good quality. Give it a try - you will be delighted you did!

“Didn't live up to the hype”
Reviewed January 10, 2013

We went for a birthday dinner, while it was a perfectly fine meal - it just didn't live up to all the ratings and rankings I had seen. I thought that their sauce was too sweet and the eggplant kind of soggy, the waitstaff seemed harried and all of our food came out in weird intervals. For a small restaurant it shouldn't be too hard to get 4 dishes out at once. I would give it another try, sometimes places just have off nights. It is small but cute inside and priced fairly - its just not my favorite Italian in Albany as suggested by other reviewers.

“Best pasta primavera around.”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

Ordered take out one night from Katrinella's for a night in. Two orders of pasta primavera, one with garlic and oil sauce, one with marinara and chicken added. The orders came quickly, hot, were generous, and UNBELIEVABLE. Deliciously prepared, great combination of vegetables and delicious bread on the side. Getting inside the restaurant itself is tricky (go around back) but the interior is very classy. Nice little gem in Albany.

“Tiny surprise with great big flavor”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

MDH and I met two friends in the NYS Capital District for dinner Saturday night. When making arrangements we were told that we could make reservations for only two blocks of time 5:30 or 7:30. Given our need to drive 90 minutes to home we elected for the 5:30 option. Much of what we experienced has been shared in previous reviews but in short:

The Cons (very few):
* Parking - Limited street parking. There is a small lot available accessed to the left of the storefront. Go through the lot reserved to a neighboring restaurant and there is a lot on the left immediately "up the hill". Very small and rather dark to walk back to restaurant.
* Interior atmosphere - This is both a pro and con. The negative aspect is how close the tables are to each other. People uncomfortable with small or crowded spaces would likely not appreciate the space.

The Pros (Made this an all around "5")
* Atmosphere - The intimate space calls to mind a private intimate club...one that might require special invitation or membership to an exclusive group. We actually felt like we were a part of an underground secret...privileged to be dining there.
* Service - Katrinella herself waited on us while her husband prepared the food. She was attentive and appeared very invested in pleasing us.
* Food - One taste will make the diner realize why everyone raves about this place. All four in our group likened the marinara to that of our ancestors. My Nonna would be proud to call this her own. The portions were huge (we brought enough home for at least one more meal each). The oil served with warm crusty chewy bread was outstanding, the calamari was tender, light and perfectly partnered with the aforementioned marinara.
* Value - The prices were exceptionally reasonable given the quantity and quality of what was served.

Bottom line - We can't wait for our next trip to Albany.

We stopped in to eat after finding out about this place on trip advisor. The place is very small and doesn't look so good from the outside but what a surprise inside. The food was fantastic ( fresh and hot ) . Server was very attentive and friendly . The prices were very good .
