“Over priced and dirty”
Reviewed January 8, 2012

This place is WAY OVERPRICED and DIRTY, DIRTY DIRTY. If you are looking for a reasonably priced, clean place, DON'T stay here - The YMCA Peniel by Galilee is horrible and EXPENSIVE.

Room Tip: The 4 bed family suite is really 1 room with 2 dirty sofas. A HUGE rip off. Don't stay here!

We stayed here for one night and I will not come back. The room was freezing cold even though we ran the heater full speed all night. Wifi was promised in all room but only worked in the lobby. In the morning there was no warm water so no showers were possible. On top of that the room was not really clean and there were ants running around on the floor. All this in combination that we paid over $100 for this room makes it the worse stay we had on our two week Israel trip.

This small time operation is privately owned & lacks the corporate muscle of a big player & it shows. However things like the hand painted arabic-themed reception & common area with fine detail & the unmatched views of the lake from this vantage point dominate your attention when standing at the reception desk. A jaw dropping first impression.

Room 9 has a queen bed & balcony overlooking this legendary lake where Jesus conducted his ministry. Aircon, mini fridge & 38 cm tv. The hot water took a solid 10 mins to kick-in each time. Paint was peeling & some nasty mould in shower but it has those incredible views from the window & balcony to distract you. The bed linen & quilt was of a high standard which made for a comfortable sleep. Rooms 8 & 7 in the adjoining rooms were identical.

Walking off the street & asking for a room, the reception guy said at first they were fully booked. 20 mins later after a change of heart they admitted they had several rooms but firstly offered us their crappiest room for a ransome, we negotiated a huge discount for one of the better ones which made up for the dodgy theatrics. Not really living upto the YMCA core values at first of Caring, Honesty, Respect & Responsibility, management did treat us very well thereafter realising our lack of transport & funds.

The 13 rooms/cottages are surrounded by landscaped gardens. Mature euclyptus trees grow next to date palms on the banks of the Galilee strangely enough. The pebble beach is not fantastic & a bit of a letdown but natural springs seep water from close to the lakeside edge which feels lighter on the skin in the shallow pools. The chapel was locked.

The reception office also manages a camping site on a very modest pebble beach in this family friendly midrange lodging. Located 5.5 kms from the Tiberias lakeside promenade its better to have a car handy, the 5km walk from downtown took us 35 mins. The Mount of the Beatitudes, Church of the Multiplication of Loaves & the Fishes, Church of the Primacy of St Peter & Capernaum are within 10kms down the road.
Stay here in a family friendly Christian environment or whilst on a pilgramage. 4 stars due to their kindess after we made several requests for assistance in organising forward transport, lodgings, discounts & about 50 Shekels in phone calls we made on their phone. Peace!

Quiet and unpretentious. This jewel sits behind a very unwelcoming but secure appearance from the main road, north out of Tiberius. Once within the locked compound, if one likes solitude while on the road like I do, the sense of rest and refreshment is very special.
I found the rooms to be quite clean compared to many hostels that I've stayed in but very basic. The best part was to see very clean sheets. This can be a chronic problem at other hostels. The TV only worked on one channel but I didn't go there to watch TV. A TV seemed very out of place here.. They don't need them.
The staff is minimal but very kind, helpful, welcoming and completely accommodating:
With one exception. The breakfast staff are slow in getting started. By the time breakfast was served, an hour of my morning had vanished. In watching the breakfast preparations on the patio, I was very disappointed to see a staff person throw garbage that had accumulated on a table, over the railing of the patio to rot along the bullrushes of the beautiful shoreline, including a large plastic water bottle. Caring for the environment seemed non-existant and almost a deliberate exhibition... This was my only disappointment while staying there.
Otherwise... YeaHH!!
I would be very happy to stay here again, (but skip breakfast).
Other than that, the expansive, beautiful, parklike grounds are great for restful meditation and relaxation, albeit a little spooky down by the water.
("Spooky" never stopped me though...)
The grounds have obviously been cultured decades ago by very caring groundskeepers but are now a handful for the small staff to adequately manage.

This is a great location to stay if you want a park setting, inexpensive place to stay on the Sea of Galilee. The rooms are very large. This place is composed of two large houses on the water of the Sea of Galilee. One downside is security. Someone tried to rob me at the entrance but the hotel staff quickly apprehended the guy and he was arrested. Great staff but not very good curb appeal. All in all I would stay here again.

We liked certainly liked the location, right outside of the town of Tiberia.s They gave us a room with a great view of the sea of galilee and a balcony. The room was not particulary clean and could have used a bit of renovation. It did come with TV and AC. It was quiet at night. Good breakfast included but service was slow. The place had their own what they called hot springs pool with a rocky sandy bottom, but it had not been kept up and was therefore not very clean. I swam in it and found the water cool. I got the impression the place needed more staff. We had a car and found it to be very handy in seeing the ocean and the outlaying areas
