It is just a small town with nice cobblestone streets. Highly overrated. Not much to do but walk around.

The sephardic temple is a must for this trip. The streets are wonderful for the different artists who are there. Some people say don't miss the candle factory at the end of the street. The tallit seem to be more expensive here than in Jerusalem.

It's dead at night, so don't expect a party. But definitely take the opportunity to have a Shabbat dinner with a host family.

It is well worth while getting a guided tour of the old city of Safed in order to understand all that you are looking at. We had a wonderful time with tour guide Richard Woolf who introduced us to a lot of Jewish history we were unaware of. The Candle Factory, Ari Ashkenazi Synagogue, and historic streets were all fascinating to explore.
