“Great Pizza Great Price Great Fun”
Reviewed July 9, 2010

A really funky dive with great pizza, cold beer and soda, and fun owners. We went here with another couple late Saturday night. The pizza was as good as any we have had = including brick oven. The guys were fun.

“NYC-quality pizza in Safed? You better believe it!”
Reviewed January 6, 2010

We had a fabulous stay in Safed at the Artists' Colony Inn (see our review) but eating choices in Safed are few and options in nearby Rosh Pina and environs are a bit of a drive (on windy roads). So here we were on end of Shabbat night after a long day of sightseeing and the last thing we wanted to do is drive some more. At our request for "walking distance" eateries, our hosts Jeff and Benay Katz suggested a local pizza place witht he best pizza in Israel. At my raised eyebrows, they encouraged us to try it and tell us what we think. We walked to the main strip as the town was emerging from Shabbat and into a small pizza place (bare floors, wood tables and chairs, more like a little "dive" in NYC), one lonely pie just taken out of the oven and placed into the display case. I had reservations about eating the pizza here. Two young men, with their peyos around their ears, tzittzit visible from their aprons, and covered in flour, came to take our orders (Israeli rap music in the background!). We had an extra large piza with extra cheese, cheese lasagna (the special for the night), and a Greek salad. A huge portion of home-made lasagna (overflowing with cheese and sauce) came out first accompanied by a steaming pizza crust (perfect implement for scooping up the extra sauce and cheese from the lasagna and a cause for family strife when it was finished). The gigantic pie was absolutely delicious. Thin crispy crust cooked to perfection with just the right amount of salt, a thin layer of sauce not to make the pizza soggy, and gooey cheese strectching out as we pulled the slices apart - just like at the little joint in Morris Park Avenue in the Bronx! The salad was fresh with lots of feta cheese but was really eclipsed by the pizza (and I don't even like pizza or pasta!!). My daughter insisted on submitting this review - we loved the ambiance, the " bare-bones downtown" vibe, and the exquisite craftmanship in what we thought would be an unlikely venue. And the best was the check - with drinks and beer, $10 pp. Don't miss this little place and if you can't find it, get directions!!
