I went on a Holy Lands tour and the Basilica of Annunciation was by far one of the most beautiful modernized basilicas that I came across. The Basilica of the Annunciation was built over the remains of Byzantine and Crusader churches – the Basilica itself is two stories where the lower church holds the Grotto of Annunciation and the upper church. I found the upper church to be quite breathtaking as the detail and colors in the interior was amazing from floors to ceiling. And the walls of the church also had art of the Virgin Mary from around the world as depicted in different types of materials. From the lower church you can see view the Basilica’s dome, which I was told by our tour guide that it’s shape was based on the Madonna lily (which is often a symbol of the Virgin Mary) with its petals opening to the shrine below. On the outside of the Basilica where I entered after the gate, you will also find a beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary and the detailing on the limestone facade of the Basilica is quite ornate as well depicted reliefs of Mary, Gabriel, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John with a bronze statue of Jesus above them.

Please note that they are quite serious here about the ‘no shorts’ rule, we had a few gentleman scolded on our tour and they were supplied cover-ups – by I would advise just to make sure that you are covered to avoid any hub-bub. Within the Basilica you can take a short walk to the Church of St. Joseph, if you go below you will have to take some narrow and steep stairs underneath the church to a crypt and an area they believed that may have been used for baptisms.

Overall, if you can get a tour guide here I would suggest one, but this is a must see if you are in Nazareth. Also, if you are on a tour… if you are able to get away from your tour guide that only takes you to souvenir shops that they get commission on your sale, I would suggest walking down the street and buy from couple of the street vendors where you can get that $10 keychain in the commissioned shop for 5 for $10.

The two-tiered method of handling visitors to the church for different reasons was creative. The courtyard outside boasts a very nice display of madonna images donated from churches around the world.

...and you will be blessed. Well worth the visit, I enjoyed the peaceful surrounding in the midst of a very busy city! Took many pictures of the international art offerings; beautiful Madonna and Child mosaics and paintings from communities around the world. The Basilica is contemporary architecture that is surprisingly warm and welcoming and there is just enough history to keep the "I've gotta see the ruins" folks happy, too.

Confusing and not well-marked, I never did find a way down to the lower levels and it was hard to get directions from anyone. We stumbled into "treasure" but it would have been nice to have had things better marked for the tourists. I concur with others that you do have to watch what time you arrive. We got there as the local Saturday evening mass was gathering and it was a madhouse of traffic. It can be confusing but well worth the effort.

We stumbled into wonderful housing at Casa Nova which is just adjacent to the Basilica and that helped. Once we were settled in, we could walk to the local sites. We were not aware of a beautiful candle-lit procession/prayer walk until we heard the singing. It was incredibly beautiful; check signs/ask questions to see if it's happening while you're in town. If so, go, if just for an experience of Arab Christian spirituality.

This is a very beautiful church. It was open to anyone to go inside and visit it. It contains many nice windows with stained glass. In the courtyard there are mosaics representing a lot of the countries of the world so you will be pleasantly surprised to see that perhaps even your country is represented there. The gardens around it are beautiful and this is a church many will remember for years to come.
Not far from the church (a 5 minute walk) is also an information centre quite helpful with free maps.
