Charming, charming reno of an old 1902 inn. But it is on second floor with many many stairs up a winding staircase, and no elevator was installed during the reno. Apparently the lower level was rented out to a store, and the owner of the building hadn't thought about the need to have an elevator until too late to plan the space! Sue, the manager, was very helpful and solicitous, and helped to carry our suitcases up when my husband had chest pains so couldn't carry.
Our room was small but efficient, and the bathroom was clean and new. There was only one chair but we carried another in from the hall so we squeezed in two and had our "happy hour".
Our little Westie puppy was welcome in the large second floor hallway where many antiques are displayed, and the staff and guests made a fuss over her. But it was a long way downstairs to take her out.
They serve a good breakfast ( if cold because it is set out at 6 a.m. for the oil workers who have to go to work) with interesting local jams, yogurt, fruit, oatmeal, paninis, and coffee. I should tell you that there are long stay guests at the hotel who work at the oil refinery just down the street, and the smell of oil premeates the town.
The hotel charges upscale rates since they consider it to be a heritage B&B. But with the lack of elevator and so many stairs, it seemed overpriced to us.

Room Tip: Each room is unique, so ask when you book what rooms are available and how each is configured.

Artesia doesn't have much going for it unless you're in oil, but what it does have is this gorgeous hotel which makes up for the everything else. The welcome when you arrive is friendly and the rooms are gorgeous, we had a huge room at the front of the hotel with lovely highly polished wooden floors a superb comfy bed and my favourite find, the old rocking chair! After wandering around sightseeing I can promise you that chair was my best friend! Breakfast is served in the lobby and there is a good selection of hot and cold foods on offer and coffee available at all times. Our two night stay was a pleasure and we were actually sad to move on. If you are making a visit to the caves or if Alien watching is your thing, then don't waste your time staying anywhere but this lovely place, you will not regret it.

This was a great little boutique hotel in the oil town of Artesia. If you're planning a trip to Carlsbad Caverns definitely make the drive north. The rooms are spacious and the continental breakfast has everything you could want. All of the reviews are spot on from the honor refrigerator to the innkeeper.

Room Tip: The largest room has three windows that face 3rd and Main. Each evening birds fill the trees on Mai...

This was a quaint, small, hotel with only 10 rooms. There was a common area on the first floor with a TV and comfortable furniture. The upper level was very homey and the innkeeper was very friendly and accommodating. There was a refrigerator stocked with pop, yogurt and other items that were paid for on an honor system. The room was cozy and clean, and the bed was wonderful. There were books and magazines available if you wanted something to read. The morning continental breakfast was very nice. It included hard boiled eggs, meat and cheese, cereal with fresh fruit, bagels, toast, pastries, yogurt, cream cheese and other items with real dinnerware. Complimentary coffee was available any time of the day. The hotel was secure in that you had to have a code to enter. Although there was no elevator, the innkeeper said they would gladly have someone bring luggage upstairs for you. The only drawback was the room we were in (#7) overlooked the rooftop patio, and if we left the curtains open, whoever was on the patio could walk right up to the window and look in. There were good restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. The street the hotel was on had some lovely bronze statues that depicted the history of the area. It is an easy drive to the Carlsbad Caverns

We were charmed by Artesia, a cute old West town which is making an effort to keep their Main Street alive. Compared to the strip mall expanses of neighbouring Roswell and Carlsbad this is a far more characterful place to spend half a day and is less than an hour’s drive from either of them. The Heritage Inn is right in the middle of the nicest part of town.

We usually don’t like guesthouse setups because they are too intimate but this one is just the right size so that you feel neither conspicuous nor anonymous. It’s like staying at Grandma’s house, quaint, comfortable, warm and welcoming.
We had a large corner room overlooking the road which was very quiet at night with excellent black-out curtains. The air conditioner was very loud but with the windows open to the cool desert evening air we could do without it. The room had all the usual amenities, a reasonable shower in the small but clean bathroom and a wonderfully comfortable bed. The cold breakfast was pleasant and parking in the street is plentiful and free. The stairs up from the street are quite steep.

The competitive edge here comes from the considerate extras provided by someone who really cares about the enjoyment of your stay. Right from the first genuinely personalised e-mail confirmation of our booking, through the friendly welcome and recommendations for our visit, free extras like biscuits and popcorn to enjoy in your room, cost-price honesty bar and origami decorations on the towels and toilet paper to the pleasant and personal farewell we felt the difference between an impersonal chain hotel and this exclusive inn.

Room Tip: Our corner room had a nice breeze through it at night

Chose the Heritage Inn over the other Artesia hotels mainly for the consistent positive comments from other travelers. The wonderful experience and warm hospitality began at the time of booking with the innkeeper Ms Sue, particularly when our flight was cancelled by Delta Airlines on the day of our departure! Changes had to be made and Ms Sue was very helpful and understanding about it. You just can't help but become loyal when my husband and I were treated kindly on our first stay.

WOW! we exclaimed upon entering the room as it was lovely and looked and smelled very clean. The furnishing all looked new and toiletries were of good quality. Loved the view of the town from the window. We felt secure as you have to code in a number to be able to get in. The place was very quiet and it felt like home.

Breakfast was continental. Perhaps they can improve on it in the future by offering hot items.

We would like to stay there again on the next visit.
