This used to be our go to restaurant, a restaurant that never failed to be great - service, food, atmosphere....... the best steak restaurant in Herzliya. Our family have enjoyed this place for no less than twenty years !
Last week, after a long business trip abroad, I arrived home and was met by the family at the airport, so why not take them all for a lovely meal at Ad Haetzem for a special treat.
We haven't eaten at this place for the past year, and apparently, during this period, the ownership has changed, and unfortunately this is reflected in our dining experience.
We ordered our usual.
Potato halves filled with cheese and bacon - satisfactory
Fried Onion ring loaf - overfried and soaked in oil. Not good.
Beef Carpaccio - slices of meat, too thick, some dry rocca leaves in the centre (hadnt been washed) a few slices of cheese scattered around (used to be parmesan but I dont think so anymore) and a few splashes of a brown colour sauce that did absolutely nothing to save this dish. This dish used to have fresh olive olive, fresh rock salt, fresh Balsamic vinegar, fresh rocca, excellent parmesan - and the meat used to be wafer thin and just delicious. No more.... we left most on the plate.
Fresh salad - the famous restaurant salad, fresh lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onion rings and the famous mustard vineagrette - again, gone. We were served with a bowl of these vegetables, including lettuce roots complete with sand particles which we returned. This was replaced.... with the same, and we just left most of it in the bowl. In the past, we used to wipe the bowl clean with brown bread - even today, the dressing just doesnt taste the same.
Moving on to the main course, the kids ordered burgers and french fries. There isnt much you can do wrong in a burger, and these were satisfactory, even though it was clear that the buns used were also of inferior quality to those of the past.
My wife and I shared a filet steak, which was under cooked, yet edible - however, far far inferior from the quality of meat to which we have become accustomed over the many years at this previously excellent restaurant.
We did not order dessert as we had had just enough of the restaurant's poor quality food.
When the waitress came and asked us whether we had enjoyed our meal, we honestly told her that we hadnt, and when she told us that the establishment had changed hands since our last visit, we then understood why this place is no longer the place to go to in Herzliya.
We will not be visiting Ad HaEtzem again, as there are far superior steak places to eat at, closer to home, and considerably cheaper.
What a shame.
