“Not meeting the expectations of a high class hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2012 via mobile

Nice hotel, great location, service wise the poorest I've visited in Israel. From the moment we entered shizen, lack of service, communication and professionalism were very obvious. Anytime we needed an employee if shizen even for a basic thing like checking in, we had to go to the Daniel hotel for help. Lack of employees after the massage we had made me walk in the Libby and up to the front desk with my robe. The massage was horrible in a non romantic environment, no proffessional equipment and non proffessional masseuse which could not deffrintiate between Thai massage and Swedish massage. More than this, i was surprised to notice, the masseuse paused my massage for having and SMS conversation on her cellphone. When I turned and looked at her awkwardly, she continued with her SMS conversation and massaged me with 1 hand. Further than this there is no communication between the employees and departments. We were constantly disturbed by curtesy phone calls with endless questions all evening. There are definitely better hotels in this area.

I stayed in this hotel for two nights earlier this week. I'd not really call it a spa at all. It's more a wing of a hotel called the Daniel (which I stayed in as a kid when it was called the Daniel Towers).

The service was incredibly mixed. I can see senior management really 'get it' and try to do their best, but some of the staff were just utterly incompetent. It was clear that the staff rarely 'followed through' on requests - such as drinks orders at dinner, room service (they invariably got orders wrong), restaurant booking requests made at receiption (never followed through), cafe staff forgetting to bring orders or making us wait 45 minutes for service.

However, the food was excellent (better than the King David!) and - given the country and its culture - I'd say this was probably as good as I should have expected for a hotel.

Also, I have to say I wasn't impressed with the cleanliness in the bathrooms or the (up its own backside) decor in the bedroom. Whoever designed the room has no idea... The beds were comfortable though!

It wasn't cheap either... and no free treatments thrown in.

Finally, this was meant to be kids-free, but there were kids on our floor. Management said it was because they were overbooked.

Room Tip: Go to the main hotel. It's cheaper and the rooms are bigger.

We spent one night and one day at the Daniel and Spa (the "Shizen Spa" section of the Daniel and Spa). What they say on their website is wrong. This hotel is supposed to be zen and inspired by Indonesia, Japan, etc. In fact, it's just an existing part of the (old) Daniel Hotel with some Asian objects. Nothing more. The restaurant Shizen Yapas Bar is a disaster. Have you already been to an Asian restaurant serving kebabs and couscous with pesto? We tested anyway what was close to an Asian dish on the menu. The taste and the overall quality was bad and it was very fat. Also, forget about the sushi they serve in the room, they are not good and served in a plastic container. The "spa"? One of the worse spa ever. Old, ugly, expansive and with a very very small jacuzzi. A shame for an hotel having "spa" in its name! We understood on their website that a half an hour massage was included in the price of the room. We apparently were wrong, according to what the receptionist of the spa told us when we first came to get some information. But when we came back to enjoy the spa, they asked us to pay a fee at the entrance. This was before we complained to finally be able to enter in the spa for free. Nobody explained us where and what was the installations, and this is where we noticed how bad was the place, to finally leave immediately. The pool and the beach of the Daniel are very busy and full of children. Last but not least, the service is definitely not incredible. The only positive points of the hotel was the room that was ok and clean (but definitely not luxurious and Asian-inspired), the sea view we had from it and the breakfast. The breakfast was appetizing and plentiful but when we asked for a fresh orange juice and that the staff had to spend some times to the machine to make it, they decided not to make it and they never came.

We would not complain if we didn't pay $380 for the night! The worse value for money! How can we be zen after that? Last but not least, we had to pay $20 for a 24 hours Wi-Fi access because, of course, internet is not included here.

We complained to the hotel and obtained 15% off on the room's price.

Our advice: don't go, you'll be disappointed!

My wife and I spent last Friday in Shizen Spa. We started the day with a Swedish massage, continued with an Israeli breakfast in the dining room of the Hotel Daniel, we went swimming and sunbathing at the pool. The hotel is clean, the staff provides excellent service. The pool restaurant staff was not professional and could not give good service at lunchtime. We waited too long to get watermelon and coffee. This is definitely a place to spend a fun day for a birthday or anniversary.

A friend of mine and I spent 3 nights at the Shizen. The location is lovely and the staff was wonderful. However, the hotel markets itself as upscale and charges accordingly, and we were very disappointed with the room, which was small and not comfortably appointed. There are no tables next to the bed and in order to turn off the reading light you have to get up and reach over to the desk behind the bed. The toiletries supplied are 100% harsh chemicals, imported from China, this in a place with pretensions to being a spa hotel. The breakfast was mediocre, the smoked salmon looked and smelled spoiled. There was a strong smell of fish permeating the place. The complimentary masage was delightful.

We came to the shizen for a short weekend especially for body treatment and stayed for the night. The shizen is a small section of 3 floors right near the bigger "Daniel" hotel. The room was good enough though it was pretty small but the great thing about it is the view from the balcony - The Mediterranean Sea (Herzlia shore) and the large pool which we didn't use 'cause it's pretty impossible in summer vacations, especially in July/August. About the location itself, it's literally a few steps from the shore and there is an exit from the pool which was great for us. The breakfast was varied though not as tasty as it seems but it's individual (We ate it the "daniel" hotel).
Would definitely stay there again!
