The Holiday Inn in Ashkelon is a bit tired but homly enough for a short stay. Food is good and the beach is also ok for a swim.

Room Tip: Noisey at weekends to take some trips out.

When I come to Israel I usually stay at this property, because hotels in Tel Aviv are really overpriced and I don't like to stay in Jerusalem, coz no see there. The hotel is located 50 km South of Tel Aviv (it's just 9 km from Gaza Sector, which gives you feeling of adventure), directly on the seacoast, which provides you amazing views from rooms. Ashkelon is a nice small wealthy town, where is pleasure to walk and etc, there is very good public beach (5 min by walk from the hotel). It's 20-25 min drive from Tel Aviv and 45 min from Jerusalem. The hotel itself is a little bit outdated and It's better to make renovation, especially for public areas, but rooms are big enough and quite comfortable. The staff is unstable, they could be really nice, friendly and helpful once and completely indifferent next time. Free parking on site.

Located on Ashkelon's seafront promenade, this imaginatively designed building provides sea views for most of the rooms. The hotel itself disappointed.

First, the good stuff: Rooms are a decent size, with a balcony. There was free internet (which didn't work most of the time). The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was clean. And finally, the breakfast was excellent.

Now, the negatives:

The bed -- a tired box spring, with a fraying bottom to the box -- it looked like giant pieces of dental floss working themselves outward from the bed. The bottom sheet didn't quite cover the mattress (just a bit too narrow).

The bathroom: The bathtub/shower was the narrowest I have ever seen...I had to stand at attention, with feet pressed together, if I wanted to face the shower head. There was no shampoo. The two tiny discs of hand soap crumbled in my hand. There were no wash cloths.

Annoyances: Vacuuming the hall outside the room at 7:30 in the morning -- who decreed that?

For $160 a night and up the guests deserve more.

Dear Dwe,

Thank you for your review and being so detailed in the good, the bad and the very good! Whilst I am pleased with the good and the really good comments, I truly value the bad comments as this gives us the opportunity of improving what we already do. We will address these points and I hope that when you return you will see the improvements that have been made.

We spent a weekend in February 2012, in typical Israeli fashion checking in around 2PM on Friday and checking out around 4PM on Saturday. We could have checked out later but we wanted to avoid the checkout and traffic rush just after sundown. The coastline in Ashkelon is dominated by a very pleasant and amusing promenade located on the cliff above the sandy beach. At the southend of the promendade is the marina and the northend the iconic cone shaped structure of the hotel. Along the promenade are two outdoor fitness centers, a modern sculpture, a medieval tomb of a sheik, two breathtaking lookouts and other great landscape architecture. There are no other hotels along the promenade and the area is quite open. We started our walk around 8AM on Saturday morning, had a drink of freshly squeezed orange juice at the marina and returned around 9:15 for breakfast. This was the high point of our stay. You can only enter and leave the hotel through the main entrance and the gate leading directly to the promenade is closed, in typical Israeli fashion. To reach the promenade you have to walk along a sandy trial from the parking lot. If you like beachfront wild flowers this is an interesting walk - a few a Israeli bluebonnets were coming into bloom. Friday evening meal was also a very interesting event. The dinning room was full of young religious couples and family groups all dressed in their Shabbat finest coming from prayers in hotel's synagogue. The meal was punctuated by singing ancient melodies from one long table that was countered by another table at the opposite end of the large, very pleasantly decorated dinning room. The buffet provided a great opportunity to sample delicious Jewish North African dishes, such as Mafrum and couscous, along with traditional Jewish Polish Ashkenazi dishes. The service was extremely attentive. We asked for a room with seaview and got a room on the ground floor overlooking a grassy area. Since there were children playing outside our window on the lawn, we had to keep the curtains closed. When we wanted to take our Shabbat afternoon nap, our neighbors sent their children out to courtyard on the otherside to play soccer. Their wild banter was amplified by the Guggenheim-like architecture. Their parents probably got some much needed rest, but we didn't. The hotel management probably realized this would happen, so on Friday afternoon they showered us with wine and a free pass to the spa. If you expect to wake in the morning and check your email for the first time since checking in forget it. When you try to log on you have to pay - up to around $24 for 24 hours, unless someone had told you before that when you check-in you should request a 24 hour password for free WiFi. Altogether our stay was a pleasant experience and provided a convenient base for taking the wild flower trail - Adom Darom or Red South.

The Holiday Inn Ashkelon is right on the waterfront promenade, with a spectacular view of the Mediterranean. From the hotel it's a short walk to the Marina and the public beach along the gorgeous promenade, complete with fitness equipment if you want to exercise and benches if you want to rest. It's a short cab ride to the city center, but there are shuls within walking distance if that's a priority for you. The hotel itself is very nice, but not luxurious. The breakfast was great -- many, many choices. The hotel has a lovely pool with an ocean view. The only thing I didn't understand was why it was so difficult to get from the hotel to the promenade, which runs right behind it. I understand the need for security at the hotel, but it seems like they could at least make a path for guests so you wouldn't have to walk through loose sand.

Room Tip: Try to get an ocean view.

We stayed here in January 2012. The hotel looks nice, however be aware, if you stay over the weekend, it can be very loud.

The room and bathroom facilities were more 3 stars then 4 and the room was quiet cold unless you had the air conditioning blowing full blast all the time.

Location is very good, on the beach. Food wise, the breakfast choice was poor and not very nice! All in all, an average hotel. For the price we paid I would have excpected a lot better standard and next time would try another hotel.

spent a weekend there with our family. took 3 rooms. very spacious and clean. marvelous sea view. could spot some surfers and listen to seagulls. had breakfast and dinner, both were execellent. they tend to spice uo their food so if you rather not, ask them and they'll guide you to dishes that are not so spicy. saturday we took some salsa lessons. it was nice. friday night there was a stand up comedy in hebrew. lots of activities for children. tip: tell them you are a shabbat observer and get to check out late on saturday without paying extra.
