Went to Scubar as the #1 rated place to eat in Ashkelon. A quick 10-minute walk from our hotel (see separate review). Table by the water at the marina. Sunday night, and quite quiet. Friendly service, good food with very generous portions. Reasonable value too.

Very nice place for Israeli breakfast, lunch or dinner. With friends or your spouse, morning snack or dinner with fish, good beer and lovely staff. And all this with relaxing view of Ashkelon Marina

We went to Scubar on a Saturday, for lunch. My friend and I each ordered a small assorted fried appetizer, and then fish and chips. We both agreed that we had never seen such a large order of fish and chips before, and could easily have split a single dish between us. All the food was quite good. The desserts were excellent. I can recommend the home-made Snickers, which is so good that I will probably never be able to eat a regular Snickers candy bar again. We may go back sometime just for the desserts. With one exception, all the food was excellent. I found the french fries a bit thin and dry. Our companions ordered the Scubar breakfast and fried mushrooms, pronouncing both excellent.

We drove 100 km each way to get to Scubar, and it was worth it.

On the Saturday we were there, we were told on the phone that they would only take reservations for groups of at least 15 people. The restaurant was lively but not overcrowded, and we had no problem finding a table for four in any of the three sections.

The atmosphere in the restaurant was unusual. As it was a warm day, we chose to sit indoors, under an airconditioner outlet. However, as all the windows and doors were open, the room wasn't as cool as it could have been.

Each drink we ordered came in a completely different kind of glass. For example, my wife ordered lemonade and her friend also ordered lemonade, but that came in two different kinds of glasses as my wife's lemonade was ordered separately, and her friend's was part of breakfast, so it came in what the waitress called a breakfast-lemonade glass.

The indoor acoustics are terrible, so the noise level was high.

I have never seen waiters work so hard. They moved very quickly and carried large stacks of dishes. As there is only one cash register, the waiters were often pressed up against it, waiting for their turn. The hallway from the kitchen to the dining area is narrow, and the waiters had a hard time getting to and from the kitchen without bumping in to one another. As a byproduct of the rushing, many waiters dropped dishes. As the floor is wood, we noticed absolutely no breakage, but the noise of the falling dishes plus the noise of the diners caused a certain level of cacophony one doesn't normally come across in a restaurant. On a nice day it's probably best to eat outdoors.

I talked to the shift manager after lunch, and she told me that the restaurant had 15 waiters for 45 tables. That sounds like enough, but it really wasn't. The service wasn't slow, but our waitress was far too busy dealing with all of her customers to be attentive. When we wanted something, I ended up having to get up and track her down.

We were served ice water at our request. The restaurant is wheelchair-friendly. The handicapped toilet is kept locked so that only people who really need it can access it - the waiters have the key.

We like going to Scoobar for its tasty fresh fish dishes and the lovely sea side location at the Ashkelon marina. We ordered our "regular" small fried fish platter. To our disappointment we received a fried fillets of frozen red mullet. The shift manager, however, was very accommodating (after we complained) cancelled the order and had us order something else. Well, we ordered a fresh fish baked in herbs fish that was excellent. It is to the credit of a restaurant that if something goes wrong, the staff knows and is willing to correct a situation to the satisfaction of their customers. We will be back and will order that fish platter again.

The food was very tasty and the service was excellent. The waitress was especially helpful in making sure my wife and daughter had gluten free options.
