“Efendi Hotel, Akko”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

This was a great experience. Although I was unprepared by the short walk in a narrow lane to the the discreet hotel entrance. Once inside the door, I discovered a fabulous lobby. The room was delightful, well appointed with a Nespresso coffee maker. The lobby on the first floor looked out on the sea. The buffet breakfast was excellent (we skipped lunch). The owner "Uri Buri", not his real name, has an excellent fish restaurant in walking distance from the hotel. The restaurant in the basement was also excellent with a great selection of wines. The wine waiter made excellent suggestions. The only flip side was that the room cleaning staff was not up to the standard of this great hotel.

Efendi hotel is unique. Large high painted ceilings' rooms. Large several lobbies with ancient furnitures keeping with the period and style of the surrounding area.there is a typical roof where you can watch a magnificent sunset and passing birds. the staff is very accomodating and nice. The surrounding is a bit poor neighbourhood and you might hear the calling of the Mouazin at 4 in the morning but also the bells of adjoining churches. This is a true gem of the middle east.

Room Tip: Room no. 4 a bit dark due to its darken lamps. otherwise very pampering.

Probably the best and the most interesting boutique hotel in Israel. Efendi hotel is giving u the most in everything - from remarkable rooms to great wine bar and restaurant who run by one of the most creative chefs in Israel. the location is giving u the feeling u r in a middle of movie. make a long story short - go for it.

Room Tip: room 10 or 11

Everything you could wish for in a hotel: tasteful decoration, spacious rooms, comfortable beds, friendly staff, excellent breakfast, good location, very clean, charming owner. Maybe it was because we got a free upgrade but this hotel is tops for us.

Don't get me wrong, this is a very nice hotel in the heart of the old city. But the customer care was disappointing. Check-in service was rush, I missed the brief tour altogether because I was out emptying the car. My travel companion would have been happy in the lobby or better yet, offered a cold drink while waiting for me and our luggage. The safe wouldn't unlock without the master code, which I now have for all the units because staff rightly decided it was easier giving it to me than coming up whenever I wanted it open. And shame, the espresso machine didn't work well. When I mentioned this when checking out the reply was: Meh, so it will be the problem for the room's next guest I suppose. Plus, there was no nightly turndown service or fresh espresso cups. For the price I expected more, especially after saying at wonderful boutique hotels in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

On my first visit to this hotel, I came with some expectations, although I thought that it is "just" another boutique hotel. But the experience in Efendi hotel is much more than that. Beautiful, carefully preserved building from the 13 century or earlier. Rennovated on the course of 8.5 years before opening just 5 months ago. Even the ceiling was painted by italian artists who replicated the historical ceiling. The hospitality and sewrvice are second to none. The food is a story on its own right - the owner of the hotel is a very known fish and seafood chef who also run a restaurant 5 minutes walk from the hotel (named Uri-Buri, and is a must if you plan to visit Acre).
There is a small SPA and also a Turkish Hamam if you really want to be treated like the Efendi itself in the old days.
Hotel restaurant serves excellent breakfast and delicious dinner in a great athmosphere.
Please note that the Muezzine of the nearby moskue prays early in the morning using loudspeakers mounted on the top of the minaret of the mosque. This may wake you up but it's inevitable and is part of the experience of visiting Acre, where people from different religions live side by side in piece.
Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Each room is slightly different in size and decoration - since it is preserved. Prices also vary...

Many reviewers and others before me have discussed at length the wondrous restoration & creation project which resulted in the "Efendi-Hotel".

I can just say that no amount or quality of photography would be able to capture the true magic of the place, the beautiful rooms, the amazing public areas and balconies and the fine details which adds up to the best boutique hotel in Israel and a worthy counterpart to the best Chateau Hotels in the world.

Another aspect of the "Efendi-Hotel" which I found to be particularly endearing is the fantastic service which operates in complete harmony with the palatial surroundings. Just a few staff members are able to supply a smiling, comfortable and no stress service which transforms the stay in this hotel into a dream like experience.

One single episode would serve best to demonstrate that impeccable service. We have spent the night at the hotel with a few friends, celebrating my wife's birth day. One of ours friends bought a watermelon while touring the market in Acre and brought it with him. We were sitting on the northern balcony, about to check out when the hotel receptionist who noticed our friend's watermelon suggested he leaves it with her and she would have it carved and brought to us. And so we were treated to a freshly carved watermelon resting on ice cubes just like that, a spontaneous and heart warming gesture shown to us as we were about to check out.

So, pack a suitcase (not a big one though, parking is an issue) and get going to the Efendi

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Nestled in the picturesque narrow lanes of Acre, the Efendi Hotel overlooks the historic city walls and the magnificent Mediterranean Sea beyond. The unique structure of this hotel combines two ancient houses that have hundreds of years of history stored within their walls. These houses were meticulously reconstructed and merged into one building before being converted into a boutique hotel.. Complex preservation and restoration work over a period of eight years gave birth to a gorgeous, breathtaking pearl that was truly a labor of love. Thought was invested in each and every detail of the preservation work, which was performed under the supervision of the Antiquities Authority. Artisans were specially flown in from Italy in order to undertake this delicate work, as well as the restoration of the beautiful ceilings. All rooms in the hotel are furnished and equipped to the highest standards, and each room has its own unique character and style. Some rooms' ceilings feature illustrations, while others are made from preserved wood. Most of the windows offer sea views, while others look out over the ancient city of Acre and the scenic mountains of the Western Galilee. ... more   less
