“You get what you pay for”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

We spent four nights at the Batu Bolong Cottages after moving out from the Santosa Villas & Resort (see my review under that hotel).

In Batu Bolong you get what you pay for: A decent hotel at a reasonable price. We paid 60 USD for our beachfront room up on the 1st floor and 35 USD for a room on the ground floor on the garden side of the road.

When you stay on the garden side you have to cross the busy main road to get to restaurant, the pool and the beach. The road is pretty busy, so it might be a challenge to cross.

The hotel has a very good chef. The fish dishes are just excellent. On New Year's Eve we had a grilled whole fish (white snapper). It was big enough for 4 people, so we could only finish half of it. The rest was shared by the hotel staff, so it was not wasted. Price: 20 USD! In Europe such a fish would cost somewhere between 100 and 200 USD. A big fruit platter with a selection of fruits enough for 2 people was 2 USD.

I see that some people are complaining about the breakfast because it consists of fried rice, noodles, white bread, jam and fruit platters. To those people I just say: Welcome to Asia! If you can't live without your corn flakes or oat rings, it is maybe better to stay in a 5 star hotel (at ten times the rate)... or just stay at home. I thought that the charm of travelling is to discover food different from your daily diet.

The rooms are nicely furnished with wooden furniture. The bathroom was basic, but clean. The pool is cleaned every evening.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. We were lucky to benefit from the services of Alawi, who is employed at the hotel as a guide. We went on two full-day tours with him, once to the south and then to the north. He also arranged for a full day boat trip along the coast from Sengiggi up to the Gilli islands where we did snorkelling. We found it very useful to have him around, and if you plan to go to Lombok you can contact him on:
alwimc@gmail.com or by cell phone at 087 864 29 78 79. We got in touch him via a US man we met on the plane from Jakarta to Lombok.

Wireless internet is available for free in the restaurant. There is no internet in the rooms (as of early January 2013), but this might change as the staff is putting pressure on the owner.

All in all: Batu Bolong Cottages gives you very good value for the money and the food is excellent.

Room Tip: You will have less traffic noise if you are deep into the garden on the land side of the road. Howev...

Before I went to Lombok, I read reviews about this hotel in Tripadvisor. Because I visited Lombok in a group arranged by a travel agent, I didn't expect too much.

I got a nice room. The sheet was clean, the bath tub was clean, the tiles were good, there's no annoying smell in the bathroom. The water run well. There were not many amenities in the room, but it's ok for a hotel in this type.

The minus thing is the breakfast. There were few choices for your breakfast. Fried rice, fried noodle, egg, plain bread and sliced papaya or watermelon. That's it for 3 nights stay. And I'd rather not to mention the taste.

After glowing reports in our lonely planets book we couldn't wait to visit sengiggi. Boy were we disappointed, the beaches we're average or covered in litter, the service almost everywhere was poor and the hawkers trying to sell you massage and other stuff were really pushy and relentless. In an hour of eating expect 9 or 10. At night we accidentally strolled into the art market and felt really unsafe and my girlfriend especially felt leered at and uncomfortable.

As for the hotel, when we first arrived the staff were friendly enough, dead cockroach on the floor but the room seem alright so we went with it. Bathroom was very nice in fairness and we saw no other bugs so it was ok.

Breakfast was awful. The worst we've had in months of travel around Asia.

The laundry service was extortionate in comparison to everywhere else we have stayed.

We left after 2 nights. Surprised we lasted that long.

We had arranged transport to Kuta Lombok via the receptionist on arrival, fortunately for us our driver came to our room and told us to pay him on arrival at our destination. However on checkout the lady at reception added the fare to our bill, had we not chatted to the driver we would have had to pay twice. When we called her out on it she immediately removed it which just proves she was trying to extort money from us.

Go to this hotel or sengiggi if you enjoy being given a constant sales pitch or are a fan of being conned (who isn't?)

Rooms are simply furnished, bathroom very simple and everything does not look too clean. The hotel is quite old. We stayed in the garden apartments across the street. Pool and beach on the otherside. Internet only at restaurant. For taking a shower, having a short sleep before going to the Rinjani trek it was okay.

Room Tip: A short stay for one night in the garden rooms which are quite simple in furnishing. The bathroom is...

My wife and I had intended 2 or 3 nights but stayed a week then extended again and again so in the end stayed almost 3 weeks! A most enjoyable place to stay especially in the garden setting where the cottages open to the most beautiful and well cared for garden and trees. The road divides the property into 2 halves; we chose the half not on the beach side. We had a 600rs room which had fridge, a/c, TV, hot water shower and bath and linen and towels etc changed every day! (Rooms are available for 300rs). Fresh water delivered each day free to every room. Breakfast, which was included in the price, was very good. We found all the staff, restaurant and cleaners and office extremely friendly. The rooms, each with a deck, are beautifully built and very clean with very fussy staff making sure all is in excellent order. WiFi included and the office will arrange tours and cars and motor bikes etc. Not a great idea to walk the 4 or 5 km to the centre of Senggigi as the footpath is rough and a taxi costs only 10,000rs ($US 1), the local bus less and both pass the hotel front frequently! Swimming is excellent (the most enjoyable we had in Bali) with the beach right in front of the hotel. And a good swimming pool if you prefer. I was able to enjoy playing chess with the locals (beach hawkers) every afternoon and they played at quite a reasonable level.

Room Tip: The screaming motor bikes, the bane of Bali, are a serious noise pollution (which the govt is trying...

This hotel is quite good on appearance: swimming pool, wood cottages with good wood interiors. On a deep analysis you'll see it's quite dirty. They clean everyday of course, but I think the room were we were wasn't cleaned deeply since time. Further the smell from bathroom was very unpleasant as it would come from sewer.
The staff is not kind, the cleaners were more smiley. On the beach in front there are a lot of annoiying sellers. It does not depend on the hotel, but this add bad feeling at the total experience.
The breakfast is good and quite but it is not sufficient to the hotel to reach an average rate.
The hotel is not so far from the center but the road is very rough to do it by walkingç it is not a relaxing walk!

We ( 2 adult and 2 children of 9 an 11 years ) stayed for one week, alltough it was clean we had to fight some nights with coakroaches ( we had a groundfloor apartment), breakfast included in price was good, they also didn't charge for extra beds, staff very friendly, from the pool there is direct access to the beach. The walking distance is a bit far to the town but taxis a very cheap. We payed 45€ per night after bargaining a litle bit.

Room Tip: Better take a higher floor and facing the ocean front for a great view
