We spent four nights at the Batu Bolong Cottages after moving out from the Santosa Villas & Resort (see my review under that hotel).
In Batu Bolong you get what you pay for: A decent hotel at a reasonable price. We paid 60 USD for our beachfront room up on the 1st floor and 35 USD for a room on the ground floor on the garden side of the road.
When you stay on the garden side you have to cross the busy main road to get to restaurant, the pool and the beach. The road is pretty busy, so it might be a challenge to cross.
The hotel has a very good chef. The fish dishes are just excellent. On New Year's Eve we had a grilled whole fish (white snapper). It was big enough for 4 people, so we could only finish half of it. The rest was shared by the hotel staff, so it was not wasted. Price: 20 USD! In Europe such a fish would cost somewhere between 100 and 200 USD. A big fruit platter with a selection of fruits enough for 2 people was 2 USD.
I see that some people are complaining about the breakfast because it consists of fried rice, noodles, white bread, jam and fruit platters. To those people I just say: Welcome to Asia! If you can't live without your corn flakes or oat rings, it is maybe better to stay in a 5 star hotel (at ten times the rate)... or just stay at home. I thought that the charm of travelling is to discover food different from your daily diet.
The rooms are nicely furnished with wooden furniture. The bathroom was basic, but clean. The pool is cleaned every evening.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. We were lucky to benefit from the services of Alawi, who is employed at the hotel as a guide. We went on two full-day tours with him, once to the south and then to the north. He also arranged for a full day boat trip along the coast from Sengiggi up to the Gilli islands where we did snorkelling. We found it very useful to have him around, and if you plan to go to Lombok you can contact him on:
firstname.lastname@example.org or by cell phone at 087 864 29 78 79. We got in touch him via a US man we met on the plane from Jakarta to Lombok.
Wireless internet is available for free in the restaurant. There is no internet in the rooms (as of early January 2013), but this might change as the staff is putting pressure on the owner.
All in all: Batu Bolong Cottages gives you very good value for the money and the food is excellent.
