“Best Hotel Experience in Indonesia”
Reviewed July 26, 2014

I spent 3 days in Jul-14 on my honeymoon in Tugu Lombok. This was an incredible experience with impressive staff, service, facilities and atmosphere. The rooms and grounds were stunning and the hotel staff went out of their way to ensure you had a relaxing time. Little details were taken care of in a personal way and no request was too much trouble. I would strongly recommend this hotel and commend its owner, management and staff for making this a memorable experience.

Unfortunately we weren't able to book this hotel as it was full so we decided to come and spend a day and have lunch to experience the hotel first hand.
This place is like nothing you will ever see anywhere else - very unique. Created by a collector of Indonesian antiques to be able to house his extensive collection, this place feels like it has a story to tell, with lots of character amd amazing good taste.
The pool is sensational and the beach is fantastic - white sand and crystal clear water, although you can only swim at high tide.
The food is good, not great,- stick to the Indonesian recipes. Must admit was expecting better but service is friendly and the setting was perfect.
Great experience, pitty we couldn't stay... Maybe next time

This hotel, the beach, the food and the facilities exceeded our expectations. The pool and hotel grounds are stunning. You can snorkel right off the beach. It is a long way from the airport but is worth the trek.

We stayed at Tugu for the final leg of our honeymoon in Indonesia. Bliss. You just cannot beat white sand, clear water, and a bintang beer in your hand.

The rustic hotel was not it tip top condition, but i guess it was part of its charm, and we loved the look and feel of the place.

There are just so many things to do here, from walking to the market, climbing waterfalls or romantic dinners on the beach. Definitely a place we will never forget.

Will definitely be back. We will miss you !

Our stay in the villa Puri Dadap Merah was perfect. The room with its pool, rooftop terrace, spacious and comfortable bed, very nice bathroom and all the other amenities is beyond comparison and even more beautiful than the presentation on Tugu’s homepage.

The surrounding is nice and on Sundays you can experience the local life at the beach, just a few meters on the right handside. We visited the local market in Tanjung. We have seen a lot of markets during our travels but this one was really special and well worth the visit.
The hotel service is very personal without being importunate.

The greeting by Fernando, the hotel manager, was very nice and gave the feeling of being welcome. A highlight was the birthday cake which was presented to my partner even if we did not mentioned the date of birth. During the check-in the staff saw the date in the passport and surprized him with this present. It was the cherry on top of our stay!

I would recommend this hotel without any constraint. Based on our excited reports, friends will visit the hotel in August.

This is a difficult hotel to write about and to rate. Firstly let me say that we are not honeymooners and we are not young and we have a reasonable amount of experience travelling in Asia over the last 25 years.

The hotel is located on a large parcel of beachfront land in the north west of Lombok. From the beach, the Gili islands are visible to the west and Mt Gunung Rinjani to the east. The beach is sand and coral and quite tidal, exposing large areas of coral at low tide. While some people have found this to be a disappointing feature, for us this did not distract from our enjoyment, but added to it. Our children loved looking at the exposed coral and collecting shells when the tide was low. Local fishermen were out on the coral at low tide collecting various edible sea creatures, which only added to the experience.

The hotel buildings are single level and an interesting collection of Javanese, best described by others as rustic. There is a quaint reception that was an old house. The restaurant is open air and closer to the beach with soaring ceilings and statues. The restaurant is accessed over an ornate bridge from reception. The main pool is sited up against the restaurant on the beach side of the building beyond which is an extensive grassed area and the beach.

We stayed in one of the beachfront villas to the west of the restaurant. This was a large room with high ceilings and a large centrally placed 4 poster bed. French doors opened to a plunge pool beyond which was the beach. One could lie in bed and look at the beach, which is a nice feature. The furnishings are handmade Javanese pieces and the rooms are pleasantly furnished with nice lighting.

We travelled with our two young children and booked a room for the 4 of us. An extra bed was provided once we checked in however this was at an extra cost of $40 dollars per night, which is a bit greedy. We subsequently stayed at the Intercontinental in Bali which provided us with 2 extra single beds at no extra cost.

The bathrooms are outdoors and colourful. There is a large outdoor uncovered bath and a separate outdoor shower with a shower head that looks like a UFO. The shower head is massive and wonderful to shower under. The fixtures and finishes are quite low end, not those of a 5 star hotel by any measure.

The gardens throughout the resort are full of interesting statues and there are large painted lights high in the trees throughout the resort which have a magical effect at night. There is little motorised traffic on the water so the feel at the resort overall is of living on a small unpopulated island.

Not everything is perfect. There are significant issues with mosquitoes. This may have been worse for us as our villa was situated close to a water treatment area on the far west end of the resort where there were large pools of stagnant water that may have contributed to the problem. The outdoor bathrooms therefore, while cute, were an issue. We needed to light 2 separate mosquito coils within the bathroom areas in the late afternoon to repel mosquitos. This worked effectively but needed to be somewhat suffocating in order to be effective. A late night bathroom run, once the coils had burnt out, was hazardous as the mozzies were hiding in waiting. They were fast and quiet as they went about their attack. There is also an issue of large numbers of mosquitos in the rooms despite intensive treatment. A mosquito net is provided for the 4 poster bed however our oldest daughter who occupied the spare single bed was at the mercy of in-room bugs and on the first night woke with her face covered with mosquito bites. So one needs to be covered with topical repellent when going to bed without a net.

The restaurant staff were friendly and reasonably efficient. Staff with a good grasp of English were the most helpful and friendly, those less confident in English were more aloof.
The resort being relatively isolated means there are few alternative dining options. Within the resort one could choose to dine in the restaurant, on the beach or at any number of other locations, all supplied for the one menu and kitchen. Dining on the beach is a highlight and quite magical.

The food however was uniformly disappointing: breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu was varied however the food was not up to that of a 5 star hotel, and not even close. We have previously stayed at the Oberoi Lombok, which is a quite close by and the food quality and presentation at the Oberoi is outstanding by comparison. Local supply of ingredients therefore should not be an issue. The food was 3 star at best. Certainly by the end of our week in the resort we were pretty desperate for to move on largely due to the food.

So overall I would rate this resort as a 3 star hotel in a 5 star location. Would I recommend this hotel? – Definitely. It is so unique and charming that it is well worth a visit. Just be aware of the shortcomings. If the resort upgraded the bathrooms with at least an in-door toilet and employed a competent head chef to produce truly 5 star food then this place would be really something. But then I would probably not be able to afford to stay there.

Dear Rob,
Thank you for your enthusiastic description and for the compliment regarding our resort on the Tripadvisor. We appreciate for your compliments on our décor, style and location. This is what the Tugu hotels and restaurants stand for and it is our mission to convey the arts, history and romance of cultural Indonesian heritage to our guests. As such, a private, secluded and intimate space is a perfect setting to explore these values. Thank you for mentioning other services like dinner locations, Bhagavat Gita room, gardens and commenting of our staff etc.
Thank you for sharing constructive feedback from your experience during your stay with us, please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience you may have faced.
We are more concern of some points you have motioned in your review. We would like to share our views.
1. Indeed, our bathrooms have the charm of open air exotic architecture. In tropical countries it is not possible to eradicate all mosquitoes; however we prevent and minimize insects with burners in the open air areas like the bathroom, lotions & mosquito spray provided in every room, anti mosquito plugs in the rooms and 3 times weekly fogging.
2. We use harmless bacterial chemicals in waste water treatment plants so there is no mosquitoes can breed in.
3. We are rather surprised that our food was not up to your standards as we are usually known for excellent quality food. However regardless, please accept my deepest apologies for not be able to satisfy your taste buds in this occasion. Our Chef & his team will be concern about your comments and they will make every effort to ensure in creating perfectly flawless experiences for our guests.
Rob, once again, we thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with us. Please rest assured that we are genuinely committed to regaining your trust, through correcting our shortcomings in the future.
Thank you and look forward welcoming you again in Tugu home,
With best wishes,
Roshan Fernando.
