“An extraordinary property with equally extraordinary service”
Reviewed January 18, 2014

We booked our two nights at the last minute from gili air. Tugu seemed both close and yet a world away, at last in the reviews. We took a charter boat over and were dropped off on the beach about 300m from the tugu entrance. And we were greeted at the door by " hello mr. Gareth".

There are lots of comments already written so let me just point out a few things.
-management is incredibly service oriented. Anything you need or could want, just ask. But it is in in the form of a request culture. If you just want to lie on a hammock undisturbed, then this is also your place
- the accommodations are world class. We selected the less expensive Kampong villas and they were gorgeous. Coming home in the evening to a candle lit pathway right to our villa door... Hard to beat. The huge copper bath full of flowers.
-yes, tugu is not in town. It is a 35 minute scooter ride to the huge water falls or the same distance to Singgigi to the south. But in between are rice fields, mosques, mountains and views that are amazing. If you want to be in town between money changer offices and wifi shops, this isn't the place. But if you like to be literally a sanctuary, a world class sanctuary tucked among a local village, this is it
-you are local. It rained on the day we took bicycles out for a ride and we were invited in by villagers to wait out the rain and served rice cakes. It was amazing. Later in the hotel we were looking at the pictures and one of the staff came over and said "that's my family"! It speaks to the quality and character of the Lombok people and the associates tugu hotels has on staff to make your stay excellent
-food. There are the odd comments about food pricing. I thought it was perfectly reasonable. Two factors on food. One is quality and the other is price. The food quality is off the charts good. We would have local lebui soup which is local black beans in a broth with meat and it is about US$4. Wonderful spiced beef cooked with shredded coconuts in banana leaf - three servings for about the same price. My main might be Nensi Goreng Seafood and it was amazing and generous. Filled with seafood and a huge portion it was about the most expensive item on the menu and somewhere around $15. Now these are not local prices, but this is world class service, an amazing chef, beautiful presentation and candidly perhaps even cheaper than the little snacks we ordered at the cheap cafe in Singgigi when we bikes down the coast. If you want international or local food prepared and presented as if you are the only guest, tugu hotel Lombok does it right
- the pool and grounds are breathtaking. The beach is white and long and desolate. A meal on the beach is hard to beat. Yes, you have to walk out a distance to get deeper water but you are rewarded with a two mile long view of a pristine beach all to yourself. It's incredible
- lastly, there are other properties around. A few world class even close by. But tugu has the special touch that makes it seem like everything is geared just for you. On our trip we stayed in a number of world class properties - and a few backpacker joints. Tugu Lombok is absolutely the winner.

Thanks you to everybody here for making Mr Gareth and Mrs Monique feel like we were on top of the world!

Tugu hotel, Lombok. Fantastic! Already planning another trip there. I was told that Lombok was how Bali used to be. Tugu is an oasis on the beach. Like something out of a James Bond movie. Beautiful, spiritual, mesmerising. Palms waving over the temple with chimes guiding you over a koi pond. The rooms were authentic Indonesian, yet with all the luxuries. The staff were genuinely friendly and anticipating of guests needs, but never intrusive. Dinner will be set and served wherever you ask for it, including in the beach or on top of the temple. We took a trip on a dragon boat to the nearby Gilli drawings island and congratulated ourselves on being out of the tourist maelstrom, dipping our toes in serenity back at Tugu. Would go again.

Room Tip: Any room is a good room. There are only 19 rooms. All private and luxurious. Beach side rooms have p...

Yep - all good here.
Really great service and friendly staff who did a very good job of making us feel at home.
Beautiful location - with a great view of the Rinjani mountains and within a bike or scooter ride of beautiful Lombok countryside.
Today we followed a healthy breakfast of papaya and ginger tea with a long swim in the sea and then a Javanese massage in the gorgeous spa.
We did a 3 hour cooking course where we picked 4 dishes we thought we might be able to re-create back home in London - Wayan the chef is a great instructor and has inspired us to eat clear noodle soups rather than bacon and eggs for breakfast.
After that we hopped on scooters and rode to the waterfalls where we swam in the pools beneath the cascades. 'Mantap Choi' ( Awesome ) ! The ride back was epic - through villages and rice paddies where rice chaff was being burned in piles - the smoke glowing orange in the setting sun.
The hotel is beautiful and full of artistry and wonderful carvings.
We stayed in the Bhagavat Gita suite - looking onto the sea and loved the room. So hard to leave.
The food is great - dining on fresh grouper at candle-lit tables on the sand under the stars, in the warm breeze by the sea, was a daily delight.
Climbing back into the super comfortable 4 poster beds at the end of the day was fantastic as well.
Stunning hotel, absolutely recommended - thanks to Hanny, Bobby and all at Tugu

I stayed at Hotel Tugu with my family (3 yr old twins and husband) between Xmas and New Year.
We had the most wonderful, relaxing stay. All the staff looked after us and were really great with the kids. Nothing was a problem and they all were very attentive and patient with the small, messy children. The pool next to the eating area is spectacular and the beach is clean and untouched.
The hotel is filled with beautiful traditional furniture and the rooms are huge. We stayed in an Aloon Aloon room with extra beds and it was more than large enough for a family of 4. They have courtyards in front of them and oversized bathrooms. The experience felt luxurious and personal at the same time. One of the best and friendliest hotels I have stayed in. Highly recommended.

Tugu Lombok is indeed a beautiful high-end resort close to the private speed boat dock of Teluk Kodek – a great location if you’re taking a speed boat from Bali as it’s a 15 minute ride away. We stayed for 4 nights over Christmas in an Aloon-Aloon Villa and paid $330US pr night. The villa was spacious and beautifully appointed.

While the hotel, grounds and rooms are beautiful, the overall experience in not consistently 5-star and the hotel clearly needs more proactive management and generosity by the owners to make it a true 5-star experience. This was not close to rivaling the excellent customer experience of an Anantara for example. In addition, be prepared that there are no dining/drinking options walking distance so you will likely be having all of your F&B at the hotel unless you do excursions…which is expensive. And then there’s the two nearby mosques which cause a tremendous amount of noise throughout the day starting at 4.45am.

Cons
• Customer service was variable. The front desk was overall solid and friendly as was housekeeping and massage. However the waiters at the restaurant were variable and sometimes a bit unfriendly. In particular, when it was raining and we ordered room service on a few occasions it was clear that the waiters were desperately struggling to hold trays and enter the villa on their own. Management clearly needs to send two waiters when it rains as two people are needed to hold the umbrella, tray and enter the villa.

• Service by the beach was variable and generally poor. Many times there was no attendant present which was very average given it would have been good to have someone on hand to advise where to swim, if there was anything to be careful of (coral for example), etc. Also, often there were no towels and I had to call multiple times to have some sent. Same with pool service. It’s a very standard practice for 5 star resorts to have attendants to look after this and we were underwhelmed. Beach equipment was very average.

• Food was okay but not outstanding and expensive by local standards. Alcohol was very expensive.

• Gym was lame. Old creaky equipment that didn’t work and no matching free-weights. For what these guys charge they should invest in some decent equipment.

• Outdoor tubs were great in theory but despite waiting for the water to warm up, it never stayed warm enough to fill the tub sufficiently for a bath (despite having it fixed).

• Beach is pretty but not very swimmable. Very shallow w lots of corral.

Cheaping out by management
If Tugu’s management is truly committed to giving customers a 5-star experience in addition to addressing the above, the following changes should be introduced:
• Give drinking water for free in the restaurant and at the beach/pool. The complimentary bottles in the room are not sufficient for daily consumption.
• Introduce a happy hour. Given there are no close alternatives, this would be a nice thing to offer guests given the high cost of alcohol.
• Include breakfast in the rate. Paying over $300 per night w/o breakfast included is cheap.
• Introduce some free entertainment a few nights per week.
• Improve the food or lower the prices.

Mosques
Given Lombok is predominantly Muslim, if you are sensitive to noise, it’s important to know that there are two mosques nearby and you will hear the 4.45am call to prayer every morning and prayers another four times a day. We personally found this very disruptive, stressful and not relaxing when spending a lot of money on a beach holiday. We both wore earplugs and were still woken up every morning at 4.45am. Not fun. In addition, one of the mosques is undergoing construction and as part of this, blares music at various times of the day in addition to the regular prayers.

Lastly, on our last day we were offered a free transfer to the boat dock but the car was delayed and instead of finding us an alternative, we missed our boat ride and had to wait an extra hour. We were left baking outside waiting for the car for an hour (I had to chase down someone for an update) and we were then forced to pay for a bottle of water we had while waiting when getting in the car. This was a bad end to the visit and reflective of the need for improved customer service. Lots of potential but much work is needed to make this a truly great high-end experience.

Dear Vagabonder,
Many thanks for taking the time to provide valuable feedback pertaining to your recent stay in Hotel Tugu Lombok, much appreciated. We are happy to hear that you had great impression of the resort specially the location, Aloon Aloon villa, grounds, front desk & housekeeping staff, spa etc.
We also thank you for posting your constructive feedback and comments; we do take your observations serious and will eventually be implementing some the feedback as we always want to ensure that 100% comfort to all our dear guests.
In direct response to your comments I would like to clarify some points:
• We will certainly improve the service in room service by adding an additional person especially during wet weather days. The beach & the pool area service will be improved & we have already taken action to provide additional towels, dedicated pool & beach attendants to look into all needs of the guests.
• In reference to food & beverage pricing, we have implemented a deliberate strategy to maintain as low as possible all items listed despite the high quality provided in both our restaurant & the bar. The main focus of this approach is of course to provide value for money but also to ensure that all guests in our care feel comfortable to completely enjoy a full sensory experience within the sanctuary of the property.
• We have already placed orders for some new equipment for the gym.
• We will check again about your bath tub water as this should not have happened, and if it did, we sincerely apologize for that. It does take some minutes or so for the hot water to come & to stay warm in the tub, but nothing out of the ordinary as we can look into this matter.
• We provide 4 bottles of drinking water free of charge in the room & will be replaced daily. Restaurants & bars will only change for additional bottle water consumed; however hotel provides drinking water by the glass free of charge in the restaurants & pool area.
• We do have evening entertainment on weekly basis especially on the beach area. However, past few weeks due to adverse weather condition we were unable to schedule the entertainment.
• We will also introduce regular “happy hours” in the future.
• As you may aware Islam is the majority religion in Indonesia, there is a big chance that you will encounter places where villages have several mosques. Prayers are according to their rituals, rites and habits and are simply part of daily life. We are glad to provide ear plugs in every room to use them if the noise levels are on high side.

At Tugu we aim to make every stay as perfect as possible, and whatever had happened with your stay, we will always thrive to be better in the future, so once again we thank you for your comments.
For the future, and when you next decide to visit Lombok please be encouraged to contact my office prior (rfernando@tuguhotels.com), to which I will manage all arrangements for you personally. I am certainly confident in our ability to restore your loyalty to Tugu hotels and I look forward to this opportunity in the near future.
With best wishes,
Roshan Fernando.

This place is amazing. The details and ambience they manage to achieve are top class. But the best thing here is the service. Everybody is very ready to help and assist you for everything you need. Really, they are so friendly and attentive you feel better than at home. Forget the other hotels in Lombok, they are all together in Senggigi wich ressembles a poor copy of Ibiza or Lloret in the '80.
The rooms are ... I dont know how to describe it. Enormous pieces that could be in a museum, the beds are so big you could fit there 4 Lakers players... Best rooms ever.
If you want to experience the best part of Lombok, all the relaxing goodness, great cuisine (the pasta is astounding, and the traditional food incredible), go to the Tugu hotel!

Room Tip: We tried two rooms: 205 and 206

Couldnt ask for a more beautiful hotel. Tasteful, elegant, relaxing and divine staff. Surrounded by gorgeous antiques, the rooms are clean and comfortable with all the 5 star luxuries you could need with friendly and ever helpful staff. Situated on a beautiful white beach, this hotel caters for couples and families. We were there for 6 nights over New Year and felt like one of the family....particularly looked after by Hunny and Lia and the restaurant staff. Always a smile and nothing a problem....the local village (Sire) around the hotel well worth a wander through. thank you for a lovely experience. definitely coming back. After staying in other 5 star hotels in Asia, this hotel is unique and far more interesting than any large ugly over priced "chain" hotel and half the price.
