“Ok for Bajawa”
Reviewed January 2, 2011

This hotel is very basic. The bed however is comfortable enough to allow a good night sleep. The location is good because there is a good restaurant called Lucas just in front and a small shop where u can buy some water and snacks.

Our room was on top and it has a reallh nice view. Before we arrived here, we were in Hidayah Hotel in Moni. After the hotel in Moni, we were so happy to be at Edelweiss. At least they have warm water and clean bed with thick mattress.

Again, I guess the highlight was Lucas restaurant. The soups were fantastic and other food too, I m Indonesian so I love the tofu n fried tempeh with spicy tomato sauce.

The Edelweis Hotel is basic accommodations in a simple town in rural Indonesia. We had heard that one cannot expect anything in the way of amenities. One can only hope that accommodations are clean enough so as not to challenge a westerner’s weak immune system. Against this backdrop we found Edelweis Hotel a satisfactory place to spend a night.

Upon arrival we were greeted by a member of the staff who requested that we walk through an overgrown garden in order to get to our room rather than through the hotel since there was a meeting underway in the lobby area. The route to our room – a newer one in the back of the hotel -- was interesting in its own. The room was extremely basic consisting of a bed, two small pieces of furniture, a clothes drying rack, and a few lights. Thankfully it was clean and free of bugs and odors. We were advised that the restaurant across the street had a good menu. The food was average.

As sunset approached, a neighbor decided it was time to feed their pigs. For the next 15 minutes we heard these animals fighting one another to grab their food. What ambiance. With darkness, the power kept going out for 3-5 minutes so we decided for the restaurant across the street. It seemed clean enough and we were pleasantly surprised by our waitress’s English. The swarms of mosquito like insects measuring a bit over 1 inch [3cm] were a little un-nerving; but they didn’t seem to bite. The no-see-um’s did bite however so visitors are advised to use bug repellent. The food was average.

Back at the hotel, we settled in for a night’s sleep. A check of the bedding showed it too was clean. We slept well despite the bedding’s poor support. Getting up at 6AM was going to come early. As it turns out, one has difficulty sleeping past about 4AM when the roosters start their routine.

We showered with cold water and admired bathroom mirror with its etching of a nude figure. The towels were extremely thin and be sure to bring your own soap and shampoo.
Breakfast of coffee, eggs, and some fruit was served on the patio at the front of our room. From this patio we could see the open-air kitchen where food was being prepared. We hoped that the food coming from this kitchen was going to be cleaner than the spot in which it was prepared.

We survived. Given our low expectations we were quite satisfied. And given the low price, we felt like we received good value.

Flores is fantastic but the accommodation is generally not good value for money and in the interior, is extremely basic too. This hotel is poor, though may be one of the best of a bad bunch....

Location: one plus point is that this hotel is located near two restaurants (one western style Indonesian & one Chinese), a couple of other hotels and is easy walking distance from the main part of town with more local restaurants and a large supermarket. Whilst we had a driver, it would have been easy to sort out transport from this area and possibly able to meet other travelers who might want to share.

Rooms: poor value as is the rest of the interior of Flores. My husband checked out Korina over the road which was even worse but I cannot vouch for the other choices in Bajawa.
We stayed in the newer part of the hotel which meant there was a sitting area outside which was uncomfortable and the garden filled with mosquitoes. There was no mosquito net so I would recommend giving the room a spray before dinner.
The new building is set back from the road behind the main building so is quieter then the cheaper older rooms. The bed was comfortable enough - take a sleeping bag liner to Flores as the cleanliness of the sheets is questionable in many places. The room itself was reasonably clean. The bathroom was basic (tho better then in Ruteng) and there was cheap hot water buckets available.

Facilities: breakfast was ok. There is no restaurant nor internet.

I would recommend visiting Flores; it is beautiful, relatively unspoilt and quiet though in the high season it can be busy (for Flores).
Just remember this isn't Bali with it's competition between hotels, better rooms/staff/value.

Not a great experience. Our room was C5 for one night only. The hotel seems to be staffed solely by enthusiastic young women who seem to lack some form of management input. The bathroom of our room was terrible.
The floor was incorrectly shaped to let water drain away
The hose of the shower was very leaky, hence next to no water came from the shower head
I had to fix the flush on the toilet myself

The rooms need some serious decorating.

To complete our misery they managed to botch our onward travel booking.

In our experience the accommodation in Bajawa is generally poor. We have stayed at 2 other hotels in the town neither of which can be recommended. Please book well in advance in high season as the better places fill up quickly and you may have little choice.
